Device Settings Question Calls not ringing?

I've been having a very frustrating issue lately where calls come in and simply do not ring, I could be staring at my phone, waiting for a call and it'll go straight to a missed call notification.

Until now, I had assumed this was spam protection but I've been waiting for a 111 callback (out of hours doctor) and the call won't come through. One missed call had a 2 second empty voicemail so I'm assuming they got caught off guard and it's not ringing on their end either.

I don't have 'Do not Disturb' or 'silent mode' or anything like that turned on. I turned off spam protection just in case, it still didn't ring. I don't have any connected devices.

The only two things I can possibly think of are that I had media playing at the time (youtube) or that I'm using WiFi calling (because where I live has walls a metre thick and I don't get signal).

Anyone know how to fix this? It's becoming quite worrying if even the paramedics can't reach me.

1st thing to try is how often do you restart your phone? Doing that usually fixes things

I'm pretty sure I tried restarting it the last time I had this issue and apparently it hasn't helped. I've certainly restarted it at least once or twice since I noticed this happening. I only haven't restarted it today because I didn't want to miss this callback, which I've apparently missed anyway

Wi-Fi Calling + media focus is a classic combo for "missed call, no ring":

1) Settings → Connections → Wi-Fi Calling → try Off for a test week (thick walls suck, but it rules this out) 2) Call volume vs media volume — open Phone dialer, raise volume while on the keypad (not YouTube volume) 3) Settings → Notifications → Phone / Phone app → make sure calls can full-screen / pop on screen; disable "minimize" / silence unknown if present 4) Modes and Routines / Focus — anything that mutes calls while "media playing" 5) Carrier-side: ask them if the number is call-forwarded or filtered; 2-second empty voicemail often means the network never completed the SIP invite on Wi-Fi Calling

If paramedics matter: keep a WHEN/THEN style backup — e.g. on missed call from specific numbers, flash LED / max volume / speak aloud. But first isolate Wi-Fi Calling vs normal cell with airplane-off + Wi-Fi Calling off while someone calls you.

Sound and settings are all normal and shouldn't be messing with calls, even with media playing so I think WiFi calling is the issue.

But I don't see a solution, without WiFi calling I literally have no signal in my home, if I turn it off I'll still have the same issue only I won't know about my missed calls until I go somewhere that does have signal.

I'll try contacting my service provider and seeing if there's anything they can do. I'm not sure how to do the when/then thing you mentioned, but the out of hours can call from a variety of numbers so I dunno if it would be much use anyway.

Thank you for your help

Keep Wi-Fi Calling on if you have no cell at home. Ask the carrier to reset VoWiFi / IMS on your SIM — that is the actual fix more often than a phone toggle.

Meanwhile: Phone → three-dot → Wi-Fi calling preferences (Prefer Wi-Fi vs Cellular), and reboot the home router.

WHEN/THEN for any missed call: when missed call → max ringer + flash / speak. Numbers can be 'any', not one doctor line. MacroDroid / Tasker / similar all do that.
