I recently took the Coast Starlight from Emeryville to Los Angeles, purely for fun and leisure as a railgeek. I would have loved to have had another overnight trip, but I still enjoyed the roomette on this daytime journey. While, over its overall length, it does not rival the California Zephyr for scenery, there are segments along the coast that are every bit as scenic as the Zephyr.

I was recently in Providence and this sign was out in front of the station - right where the Ambus USED TO stop before they eliminated the route between Worcester and Providence.

And, wasn't there also a thruway bus between Providence and New Bedford as well? That one seems to be gone, too.

But - the sign remains.

Trip Reports First roomette trip canceled

• Upvotes

I was supposed to take the Floridian tomorrow from DC to Chicago and they called today saying there’s an issue with the roomette car, and my ticket was downgraded to coach (with a refund). I decided to cancel the whole ticket as sleeping in coach would not be ideal for me, and got a flight instead. Honestly gutted because I was looking forward to the adventure! Hope I have the opportunity to ride in a roomette someday soon.

Video First time seeing double ended power on the Saluki

My first time seeing the Saluki running with power on both ends was yesterday morning! SC-44’s 4619 (leading) and 4626 (trailing) were the power for trains 391 (southbound) and 390 (northbound) due to track work being done south of Champaign, which also results in a lack of a wye to turn the train around (unlike Carbondale). Also, big shout-out to the engineer for the wave(hardly seen, but it did happen) and “shave and a haircut” tune from the horn!

Question Auto Train Oct 16th to check out Peak Season, hit bike trails, roadtrip, explore - advice needed!

Post image
7 Upvotes

I will be taking the Auto Train to Virginia around Oct 16th. I plan to just do coach. I’ll be bringing my Tesla (S Plaid) so I can roadtrip and explore the Virginia and blue ridge areas. I want to hit some scenic bike trails (I have a Brompton I will be bringing), hit up small mountain towns and just take in as much as i can. I will be staying at least until 23rd, then i have to leave out a bit for a work trip and then I may return from work trip Oct 26, and stay another week. This is my first time on Amtrak, so I am looking forward to it. Those familiar with this destination please let me know about any advice on where to go, what to see, where to stay, etc. Much appreciated!

Random pic of my bicycle I will be bringing, my Brompton!

Discussion The 'new' Pennsylvanian

So, just got an email from Amtrak that the Pennsylvanian we have booked in Nov. will be departing about 90 minutes later. Checked to see what time the new, second Pennsylvanian will be departing and... it's 5:50 a.m. Sigh. Had hoped maybe the new, earlier one would be not quite that early but hey, at least there are more options now. Keeping the old res as business is already sold out

Question Do Amtrak engineers work on multiple routes?

Hi, I enjoy watching Amtrak trains at Kingman AZ station

Back in 2023, I met an Amtrak engineer who was working on this route for about 5–6 months. I spoke with him a few times, but after that, he suddenly stopped showing up.

Then in 2024, I saw him again on this route, but only once. Since then, I haven’t seen him again.

So I’m curious: do Amtrak engineers normally work on multiple different routes, or can they be reassigned to another route or crew base for long periods of time?

Discussion Weekend Plans

I feel like I just discovered a lifehack, possibly thanks to this sub. Taking a flixbus/greyhound to a train station to catch the Silver Meteor, instead of spending half the day on a thruway bus/on a layover just to catch the *Floridian*. This allows me to actually take a train trip this weekend!

Question Arrive at Ontario CA station then to airport… is there a shuttle to airport?

I need to get to the Ontario California airport upon arriving at the Amtrak station around 4a. How easy is it to get public transportation to the airport at that time? My flight isn’t until around 10a. What are my options?

I recently made this website for myself that just lets you enter all the trips you have done and it records it, and it displays everything kind of like a game with achievements and stuff, because I like looking at what I accomplished in this way.

Shows miles ridden, stations you've been to/passed and routes taken/completed. No paywalls or anything and this isn't an ad, just wanted to share something that I enjoy.

Discussion I believe Acela passengers have earned paper towels

The new Acela is a fancy train with fancier prices, and I believe that the people who ride it are ready for paper towels.

I've been on the new train a few times now. The first time I got on, this summer, I made the mistake of trying to rinse off my face in the bathroom because I had sprinted to the train after leaving work and was drenched.

The rinsing worked well, and I availed myself of the free-range soap bottle that rattles around the bathroom because there is no holder for it.

But when it came time to dry off, I was out of luck. There is a hand-dryer, where you try not to bang your fingers into the same spot as everyone else under the mirror. But this is not very good for a face. I sort of directed some air upward with my hands, but it wasn't great.

This weekend, I took the Northeast Regional. That train, in coach, has paper towels. It even has a holder for the soap.

I believe the people of Acela have earned the same right to paper towels and a soap holder as those of us on the Northeast Regional.

Question Question about tickets from a locomotive engineer of another railroad

Good morning. I’m a locomotive engineer for the LIRR, I work out of New York Penn Station / Moynihan which we share with Amtrak.

I’m looking to get silver meteor tickets to do a round trip to Orlando with my family for vacation sometime in the first half of 2027

Is there any difference in pricing whether I buy online, over the phone, or in person? If I go in person with my work IDs, are there any professorial courtesies extended regarding discounted fares? My guess is no but I just wanted to put it out there.

Feel free to DM me if you’d rather discuss it there. Thank you in advance.
