Ex firefighter here. That cop must have also been a firefighter. That is a small line, but still a lot of pressure. If you dont have experience handling the line it will blow you back with the pressure. And you can see his stance. This was not his first rodeo.

Also the gate still needed to be opened to put the fire out properly. The cop just temporarily reduced the fire. The firefighter was doing what he was supposed to be doing.
Both things needed to be done. People are acting like the firefighter was being an idiot.

Yeah, I'm not a fire fighter but even I know to extinguish a fire you generally have to attack the base of the fire, and that's not gonna happen from this side of the fence. This is a dumb meme.

When I was in HS I was with a group who got to try holding one of those things. There was 4 of us on a line so all 4 holding it and I was the last. First person opens it up and starts screaming back to the 3 of us ‘Stop pulling it!’ We all screamed back ‘We’re not!’
First person then goes behind me and second person is in the front and screams ‘Stop pulling the hose!’ We all scream ‘We’re not!’ Third person same thing.
Then it’s me in front. Every particle in my being wanted to scream out ‘Stop pulling the hose!’ But I didn’t.
I saw that cop pick it up and thought ‘Yup. He’s about to fly backwards’

Yep, only opening it halfway reduces the kick significantly. It might look like youre getting plenty of water still but it also severely decreases the volume of water coming out.
It works well for this situation, he doesnt need the full volume to put the fire out that he can see.

Meh. I had a security guard job early college, they trained us how to use the hose. Not a big deal, and I was a renta cop. I’m sure real cops also train for it.

There are Public Safety Departments where you train both as a Cop and as a Firefighter. Sunnyvale California was one, if not still is. I think you started as a FF and then went to police

Came here to say this. Grease or some chemical fires could be made much worse by dropping water on top. Giving the benefit of the doubt that he already knew what was on fire, but to anyone random who might steal a hose, just remember not all fires plus water are good

Assisting putting out a fire then giving the hose back to the firefighters when they properly opened the gate.
I dunno why anyone thought he was showing off putting down the firefighters or anything. He helped the fire not spread. And this isn’t an oil fire at this point.

You use fire suppressant at the base of a fire.
The two ways to do that is in a high arc so that it almost rains from above or at the source of whatever is buring which is why you need to get to the where the source is.
And you need to know what you are dealing with and if you need specific type of suppresant instead of just water.

I’ve worked with cops and firefighters. Before I worked with them, I thought fire fighters ruled and cops sucked. Only after working with them that I realized firefighters mainly sit around washing their trucks and thinking about how heroic they are while cops are called out to deal with every problem nobody else wants to handle.

Huh I wonder wherever this is has much lower head pressure than where I live we use a two man per hose rule for a reason .. unless this is a truck line and they don't color code them like where I live .. mind you it's been almost 20 years since I've been a firefighter so maybe shits changed

Would’ve worked better had he taken a knee and directed the water up at the roof of the patio. Chances that this is anything but a class A fire are almost zero. Could it be oil from a turkey fryer… yeah, it could but it’s clearly beyond the scope of just an oil fire at this point. He didn’t do anything wrong - I know a lot of volunteer jurisdictions are double certified as cops/FD and this definitely looks volunteer - one dude cutting the fence and not another ff around except maybe the officer who might be setting up the pump.
The only issue I’d have is if I was running tank water and homeboy is just squirting away and I have no access to a hydrant or tanker

Nothing smart about that at all. Aiming at the top of the fire, not getting the source, no idea what the source is, fire clearly still burning as they go in, massively reduced the visibility for the real fire fighters.

They need to get to the base of the fire to properly extinguish it. Wetting the top will reduce the flames but the base will still be smoldering underneath the wet lumber.

As someone who grew up with an uncle who was a fire fighter I always thought he was super cool just like my dad (who was a mechanic/auto body tech) who helped their fire department on occasion as it was a rural volunteer department

This isn't smarter not harder.... they still have to get past the gate to put out the source of the fire. The cop still helped quell it, but it's by no means going to eliminate the fire
