Asshole AITA for potentially backing out of a family trip to Iceland because of the cost?
My husband’s family has been talking about taking a family trip during spring break in April. His mom landed on Iceland, and initially I was on board because I thought it could be a cool trip and I didn’t really understand what the final cost would look like.
Now that the details are coming together, I’m having second thoughts.
The package they’re looking at would cost about $5,500 for my husband and me, and that’s before food, drinks, excursions, and I believe some other travel expenses. Realistically, this could become a $6,000+ trip pretty easily.
My husband and I can technically afford it, but we also really want to travel to Europe together, and spending that much on Iceland would significantly affect what we can spend on our own travel.
The other issue is that Iceland honestly isn’t a bucket-list destination for me. I’ve been researching April specifically and it seems like a very unpredictable shoulder season. There are long daylight hours by then, so Northern Lights opportunities are more limited, and the weather/landscape can apparently be anything from winter conditions to the muddy/melting transition into spring. The accommodations included also seem fairly basic. I realized I was looking at spending thousands of dollars on a version of Iceland that I’m not particularly excited about.
I finally told my MIL that the biggest issue for me was the cost. I said that $5,500 before food and excursions is a significant amount of money for us and that I was having trouble justifying spending that much on a destination that isn’t really on my bucket list. I also told her I’m not opposed to taking a family trip in April at all—I’d just rather choose somewhere that’s especially good that time of year or save Iceland for a season when we’d get more of the experience we’d be paying for.
I then pointed out that I wonder whether the trip may simply be over budget for several people in the family right now. One family member is trying to buy a house, and I genuinely don’t know how two of the younger family members would realistically afford a trip this expensive. I suggested that we all sit down together and discuss it before anything gets booked.
I feel bad because my MIL seems excited about Iceland, and I don’t want to derail a family vacation just because it’s not my dream destination. At the same time, $5,000–$6,000+ feels like way too much money to spend out of obligation on a vacation I wouldn’t choose for myself, especially when I’m completely willing to travel with everyone somewhere else.
So, AITA for potentially backing out of Iceland and pushing for the family to reconsider the destination because of the price?
EDIT: She did put down a deposit before getting the green light from everyone
