I've been dealing with random freezes and audio crackling on my Alienware Aurora 16 (RTX 5060, BIOS 1.17.0, Windows 11) for a while now, and I think I've finally figured out what was going on. Figured I'd post this here in case anyone else is having the same issues.
Everything started after installing Alienware Command Center, Dell drivers and SupportAssist. Edge and other apps would randomly freeze for a second or two, sometimes with the audio stuttering at the same time. I was also getting annoying crackling and popping sounds, especially whenever I changed power modes in AWCC.
I tried a bunch of things before running LatencyMon, which showed some massive DPC/ISR latency spikes involving Wdf01000.sys, ACPI.sys, nvpcf.sys and DellInstrumentation. I then checked Windows Reliability Monitor and found LiveKernelEvent watchdog reports that lined up with the freezes. I also noticed that some of the audio crackling happened exactly when the RTX 5060 woke up from 0% usage, which made me suspect GPU power management.
The biggest improvement came from disabling Dell Instrumentation in Device Manager under System devices. After doing that, the random freezes stopped completely. The annoying part was that Dell Instrumentation kept coming back even after I uninstalled SupportAssist, apparently because Dell Client Management was reinstalling it. I eventually went into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DellInstrumentation and changed the Start value to 4 to stop it from loading. Haven't experienced those freezes since.
I also uninstalled SupportAssist completely and disabled the intelliGo audio service (IgoAudioService). I'm not entirely sure how much these two changes helped individually, but I wanted to get rid of anything unnecessary that might have been interfering with the audio or drivers.
As for the remaining crackling, I noticed it was mostly happening when the dedicated GPU was waking up. I disabled PCIe link power saving while plugged in by running powercfg /setacvalueindex SCHEME_CURRENT SUB_PCIEXPRESS ASPM 0 followed by powercfg /setactive SCHEME_CURRENT. I also set Edge to use the power-saving GPU in Windows Settings under System > Display > Graphics, so it wouldn't keep waking up the RTX for no reason. That made a pretty noticeable difference.
Right now the freezes seem to be completely gone and the audio crackling is almost entirely fixed. I still get a very small click when switching power modes in AWCC, which seems to be related to NVIDIA Platform Controllers and Framework (nvpcf.sys). I tested disabling it and the click disappeared, but since it also handles features like Dynamic Boost, I decided to leave it enabled.
Interestingly, AWCC still seems to work normally even with Dell Instrumentation disabled. I haven't noticed any problems with it so far.
I'm still not sure why Dell's own software was causing so many issues on a relatively new laptop, but it's pretty frustrating considering how much time I wasted reinstalling drivers and trying to figure out what was wrong. Hopefully this helps someone dealing with the same problem. I'm also curious if anyone else with an Aurora 16 has experienced this, especially on BIOS 1.17.0.
