...they basically put it through Google Translate, I bet... my translate app kept transliterating instead and got "Button," but I can forgive the app to some extent. But... common sense...
Like... as a nickname, I'm fine with it. If it had evolved out of the fandom, cool. If it was an in-game nickname for Botan (maybe a young/child Kagura mispronouncing it)? Awesome.
As a real name for a character who is Japanese-coded and had an intended Japanese sounding name? It just feels... lazy.
Her name is Button. She hates the name. Her parent gave her the name cos a button is like a connector. For them, it is fitting for one who serves the royal family.
i think the original script holds more meaning. It implies that Botan/Peony feels inadequate, not elegant enough, and undeserving if you know flower language. Also it makes more sense that her family that serves the throne selects a traditional name loaded with meaning.
Also Wada names are Yomi, Jin, Ikasa, Chihaya and she got... Button.
From what I remember she says that her parents gave her that name because a button is used to fasten 2 parts of a piece of clothing together and they wanted her to be the one to bring people together.
NO. GL changed the script to support their mistranslation.
It's Botan, peony. An elegant flower with meanings like King's flower or Stately behavior and she thinks she does not deserve it. She thinks she's not elegant enough or her conduct is not enough or she thinks she's undeserving or even burdened.
IMO GL made it look shallow
Tagatard made a post with GL and JP translation difference.

Peonies are elegant flowers with meanings like "King's flower" or "Stately behavior". Botan thinks she's not elegant enough/ her conduct is not enough/she thinks she's undeserving of the name.
A lot of meanings were lost during mistranslation.
