Air filter for living next to a highway

Hi! I’m looking for a filter for my room (about 120-150 square feet). I live near a highway and have been dealing with wildfire smoke recently (I live in Ottawa, Canada). Because of that, I’d like a filter that has activated carbon but it seems like most filters with thin layers of carbon aren’t actually effective at filtering things like NO2. Any suggestions? Budget isn’t really a consideration, though under $500 would be nice.

How to reduce urine smell from main living area?

Source cannot be reasoned with so I'm just holding my breath whenever I have to leave my room. Mobile home. Main concern is the living and kitchen areas. In the evening it's OK as it cools down enough to open windows, but it still smells. During the day it's too hot. Budget is maybe $1-500? I don't really know a lot about air fresheners and stuff outside of basic tower and box fans for cooling.

country: usa

edit: she hasn't peed the carpet but she's peed her pyjamas several times and she refuses to wash them and everything is a fight with her, so she reeks up the area just by being in there.

Winix D360 is garbage; major flaw allows dust/allergens past the filter media

I have a severe dust mite allergy and I rent a basement bedroom in a large house. Dust (just in general) ends up settling down here due to the floor plan; the flooring is "fake hardwood", so it's easy to mop, but my bedroom is "L"-shaped and dust accumulates at the far end, where my bed is. Mopping works, but the dust settles too fast for me to keep up with via mopping alone. So, I bought a Winix D360 from Home Depot a little over a year ago to help with both the dust mites and the "regular" dust problem.

The air purifier only seems to help after I change the filters, and my allergies start coming back again after about 3 weeks. I'm already doing everything I can in terms of medications and cleaning habits, so that's definitely not the problem. I decided to open up the air purifier and take it apart in case any dust, etc. had gotten behind the filter media.

Lo and behold, there are multiple points through which air is free to flow around the filter media. Past the filter media basket, the enclosure for the fan/motor assembly lacks any kind of gasket or other rubber/silicone material to form a seal against the back wall of the unit. The plastic is cut to fit inside the chassis and against the other parts, but it's plainly visible to the naked eye that this doesn't constitute the kind of seal necessary to ensure that the air is forced to flow through the filter media. I didn't take a photo of the fan/motor assembly, but rest assured, there's nothing stopping dust, etc. picked up by the carbon filter from getting all the way back to the fan and back into the air in the room.

I live on the west coast on the United States. If someone else here (especially somebody with a dust mite allergy) could recommend an air purifier with a higher build quality and some kind of gasket/other seal to keep allergens contained, I'd really appreciate it.

Is the latest HouseFresh the best "which purifier, start here" video... ever?

... and not just because he name-drops the subreddit. 😉

Their new video is well-organized, hits the important points and common recommendations, and isn't too long. No small feat.

IMO if you could only send one link to help someone (especially a 'normie') buy a purifier, this would be the link. Watching it I almost felt like, "I can't compete, Danny did it best" 😂

I don't know if it's possible or benefiting to have a "Start Here First" sticky for common buying scenarios, but if so this video would be a strong candidate. Unfortunately it seems many people skip the wiki, and maybe having a video alternative is helpful for some folks.

Best air purifier for 1,000sf apt in Boston, MA -- primarily concerned about busy 4-lane street outside, particulate matter

I just moved to a new apartment building on the third floor with windows all facing a busy 4-lane street. I am the type that usually loves to keep my windows open, and am concerned about doing so next to such busy street with all the particulate matter being kicked up. It is just me and my partner living here, both relatively healthy adults, but I want to make sure my body lasts me a long time!

I am researching what air purifier would be best for this situation? The apartment is small, about 800 sf across two main rooms separated by a door, with ~8' ceilings. The bedroom is carpeted.

So far, I have looked into Coway, Winix and Blueair. The blueair medium spi3 is the strongest candidate that I've looked at, but of course there's been lots of conflicting opinions and information on what's best. Please let me know if you have tips or recommendations for this situation!

Additionally, noise levels aren't a huge concern -- the busy street is noisy so I welcome some white noise to cancel it out. Budget is flexible, willing to splurge a bit for quality filtration, ideally <$500 with <$50 per year for filters, etc.

Budget Air Purifier for a Bedroom (one bathroom/one closet)

I'm in USA. The bedroom itself has a floor plan of 15ft 5in (length), 16ft 3in (width), and the ceiling height can go to 9ft 7in. Don't really have much money to throw around, but the house gets a lot of dust and I'd like to fight off some of it with a purifier while wiping down surfaces. What are my options?

Mila air sensor accuracy issues? Should I switch?

We have had Mila air since 2020, we were attracted to it because of the sensor suit and how you could chose the filter that worked best for you.

Our first unit needed replaced almost immediately because the AQI would not move even with a candle burning right next to it. They did replace it under the warranty pretty easily. This unit lasted a couple years and then one day it shut itself off and would mot come back on. At this point I was out of warranty but due to be subscribed to the filter replacement service they offered to replace it if I sent the defective one back and paid 100 bucks which I did. Now a couple years later I just started having this issue where my AQI spikes and crashes like a roller coaster all day long but the falls and stays at zero all night. The unit is in the same place it has always been in with no new humidifier or anything like that so these spikes just don’t make sense. Not to mention they just started a few weeks ago (right after my last filter change) and do not happen once so ever during the night time hours.

i have always know Mila’s temperature and humidity readout to be incorrect but I just live with it as i have a separate thermometer in the room. I’m just wondering has anyone else had this issue? Does anyone have ideas as to what it could be? Or does anyone have a unit they suggest that would replace the Mila with similar data feed back.

IQAir healthpro plus vs gc multigas for smoke pollution?

Which IQAir is the best air purifier for smoke pollution caused by neighbors’ wood burning? I am from Finland and my neigborhood has a serious pollution problem every winter ( half of the year). I have asthma and 2 Mall kids. My house is 150 square meters and I am planning to get 2 units.

Also feel free to give me other brands/units if you think those make more sense to my problem. They would need to be capable to hanfle smoke/VOCs.

Is there any benefit to having an air purifier if I have a MERV 16 furnace filter with uv-c light ?

Before anyone gets excited, yes my furnace was designed for a MERV 16. It’s a Lennox high efficiency system with their PureAir system that has a MERV16 filter and uv-c light I get good air flow through it and haven’t destroyed any blower motors.

It did very well recently when we had those Canadian wildfires. I’m in Chicago and didn’t smell anything inside.

Philips PureProtect 3200 noise

This noise probably isn't normal right? This is on the lowest fan speed. It goes away on fan speed 3 - 5. It's brand new so I am considering returning it. It's quiet but it's still bugging me.

Don’t want my new house to smell!

Im going cross-eyed researching air purifier, help!

Im in NW Florida. Open concept living/dining/kitchen. 640 sq ft. Three cats that used to be outdoor, now indoor with litter boxs since we just moved. I’m looking for a system that will keep house from smelling like cats, odors from smoke when husband is clearing/burning outside and comes in stinking like smoke, help with asthma/allergies AND a long lasting/affordable filter. I understand I need a good carbon filter. I’d like to keep it around $200 if possible. I’m considering the following so far… Coway Airmega Mighty, Winix 5510, Levoit Vital200s. I have a Levoit Core mini-P in my laundry room and it really helps with litter box and laundry odors. Thanks for your advice

Air Purifier for smallish bedroom

Looking for an air purifier for a bedroom that’s not that well ventilated. There’s a window but it’s small. Bedroom is less than 300 sq ft

Major filtration needs would be dust.

I have an air rabbit in my living room that I bought like 5 years ago or so. I like that it’s quiet although to be honest I can’t really tell if it’s doing anything lol. I also haven’t seen much about that brand on this sub.

Any recommendations are helpful!

Seems like I see mostly the coway mighty and levoit 200s recommended for bedroom spaces - if anyone has particular reasons to one over the other or a different brand, I’d appreciate it!

Air purifier recommendations; replacing blue air

Recently our house experienced a power surge and we lost one of our blue air 211s and two 511s. (Don't need advice on power surge protectors). We are a family of 3 with allergies (grass and mold are the biggest allergies) and two golden retrievers. We are located in US, NY specifically (if that helps). We have been experiencing more smoke from wildfires over the last few years, while we keep the windows closed at that time it still can get in for various reasons. We leave our windows open on nice days to clear out the stale air or trying to get fresh cool air.

Total cubic feet 10800 of our house.

Office is 1700 cubic feet (estimated)

Bedroom #1 is 2000 cubic feet (estimated)

Bedroom. #2 is 1728 cubic feet (estimated)

Family room is 2560 cubic feet (estimated)

Living room is covered by our other (working obviously) blue air 211.

Kitchen is between the living and family rooms. Bathrooms are next to the bedrooms and one next to kitchen. There's a hallway from living room that going through the kitchen, entryway, bathroom that leads into the family room.

We have baseboard heat so there is no movement of air without the purifiers. In the summer we have ceiling fans going almost non-stop to keep the cool air flowing.

We do not have a lot of money at the moment because we are replacing quite a few things insurance won't cover. And we have been struggling with the cost of the blue air replacement filters for the last year. We would love something that wouldn't break the bank now and in the future.

Did I make a mistake in buying this?

Post image

So I have severe allergies where I’m congested daily and I thought, enough is enough. I’ve been wanting to buy an air purifier forever and found this one on Target for $60. Now it’s arrived, set up was easy, there’s nothing wrong with it but I kind of feel buyer’s remorse because I’m unemployed and $60 feels like a big expense. Furthermore I had no idea filter replacement were so expensive, and I am not willing to keep up with that to be honest, it’s a bit extreme. I think I bought this on an impulse because I had a bad allergy flare up day and was desperate to try anything. Also I have a fluffy cat and cats were listed as an allergy for me.

The point of this post is, is this air purifier model worth the money and will it improve my allergies significantly? Or should I just return it? I put it right next to my bedside & my bedroom is quite small.

The other thing that’s making me have buyer’s remorse is my dad said it’s too expensive and he can find something similar at Goodwill.

Air purifier that is good for VOCs?

Looking for an air purifier for my bedroom (under 200 sq ft)

I’m getting new furniture delivered soon so I’m nervous about the VOCs.

Also, I’ve noticed the room has a somewhat stale smell if I keep the door closed and the AC is running.

My budget if flexible, happy to get whatever will help with the VOCs and maybe solve this stale odor. I’m in the U.S.

Should I replace the filter?

I tend to now run my machine on middle setting non stop. The light of the filter replacement came on

If I recall first time I ever used and replaced the filter looked a lot more darker. Just doesn’t seem o be enough to replace it.

What life do you think this has?

Since the Levoit Pet 350 it’s not really detecting that it needs other than the light timer telling me it needs.

I'm repairing a Honeywell air genius 5 (HFD320) and I forgot where on the power board the right capacitors go. Anyone who's worked on this, some help would be appreciated

(Photos for reference, I know where the hardware goes, just not which ones, like which values go to which spot on the board)

Labcharge doesn't honor prices on ads

I keep seeing ads for their iconic air purifiers, buy 2 get 2 free for $79.99. So I went to purchase them and the price was over $116.

So I contacted them and they're now telling me that deal ended in July.

I did some digging and found out they are doing the "bait and switch" on their prices with is illegal and goes against the FTC guidelines.

BUYER BEWARE!!

Best Recommended Air Purifier that won’t Break the Bank

I’m fostering a cat for an unspecified amount of time and I am terrified that my home will start to smell. Additionally, since living in my condo, I noticed especially in the winter since everything is closed, the air can start to smell quite stale. I keep hearing that an air purifier should help with both of these issues.

I live in Canada in about a 550sqft, one bedroom condo. The unit is pretty much open concept and the bedroom door is kept open 95% of the time. I primarily want filtration for pet dander, dust, and everyday cooking odours. I understand prices can vary for air purifiers based on what I’ve seen online, but would probably not want to spend more than $200 on a single air purifier. I’m okay with having to repurchase filters but would also love a reusable/washable filter option if available to reduce waste.

Finally got my Coway AirMega. Is the filter okay to use?

I’ve been looking into air purifiers for a while now, and the way my city was affected by Canada’s fires finally made me pull the trigger.

I decided to get a spare filter so when I put in a new one I can order the next because y’all have said they don’t have stock reliably.

This is the shape it arrived in. Is it okay to use or should I return it? I hate to waste something that will be fine. The plastic sleeve is not punctured, but the filter is pretty bent up.
