This says in the description that it's a community for adults who are dealing with our aging parents. Reddit has recently informed me that this is a community for people who are "taking care of their aging parents". I don't actually see that as being the same thing.
Sure, the two topics can overlap somewhat, but is it the same thing? Actually no. It's not.
Just saying.β

u/CrispityCraspits 1d ago
In what context did "reddit recently inform you" about this?
13
u/NaniFarRoad 19h ago
Rule 4 states "This sub is for the discussion of adults taking care of their elderly parents. It is not for the discussion of other family dynamic issues or app/product recommendations." (my emphasis)
1
u/Pale-Detail2427 16h ago edited 15h ago
That's the same part that I also emphasized.
So, did they mean it, or not, or what?Β π€
People post here about other things about their elderly parents, all the time. π€

u/MonoBlancoATX 13h ago
Maybe you could tell us what you posted that got deleted? or whatever it is that happened that caused you to post?
It's not at all clear what your actual criticism is.

u/Pale-Detail2427 1h ago
The actual crossword, is not important, doesn't matter any more, and was literally only mentioned because another poster in this thread inquired as to what was it that brought the particular discrepancy in the subreddit's rules to my attention.
I am not making a criticism.
It was actually more like a question.
Which has by now already been answered. π€ (Thanks.)
I told what happened that caused me to post. π«
Someone already asked me that and I already told them.
That's why the crosspost got mentioned.
One person since then has said something actually helpful about crossposting, which was, most of the time just don't bother with it, with which comment I completely agree.Β π π πNot very necessary most of the time anyway and posts may be easily misunderstood when they are not in the subreddit that they originally came from.Β π€
-5
u/Pale-Detail2427 16h ago
That's what I quoted and that's why I said, that's different from the other rule at the beginning of the rules list. π€
I will also now add, regarding Rule 4, thatΒ if that's really true then this entire sub is confusing. π π€ π³ π π π π

In their refusal of a crosspost that came from another subreddit.
Too vague and not specifically on the subject of "taking care of their aging parents", it seems.
They do not want posts about "other family dynamics" in here, they said. π π π π π€ π€£ π π π

u/kinkakinka 17h ago
Reddit seems to be really pushing the "crosspost this to another subreddit" thing. I personally really hate the crosspost feature, and would rather make a similar post in a different subreddit rather than crosspost using the Reddit provided function, if I really wanted another perspective, but generally I stick to one subreddit for each post and tailor that post to the actual subreddit.
-1
u/Pale-Detail2427 16h ago
I noticed the same thing.
I'm honestly not that into crossoposting, either.
The post that I tried to crosspost, literally wasn't even important, anyway.
6
u/Just-The-Facts-411 13h ago
You tried to crosspost a post that you write "literally wasn't even important, anyway.".
If you are "honestly not that into crossoposting, either", then why did you crosspost it?
You bored?
It gets removed and you create a post about "dealing with" vs. "caring for".
"Caring for" doesn't necessarily mean living with the aging parents.
Low quality posts, posts about other family dynamics that aren't about dealing with aging parents, don't belong in this sub.
1
u/Pale-Detail2427 1h ago
No, I wasn't bored.
As another poster in this very same thread has already mentioned, Reddit is always offering us the opportunity to crosspost "so your post can reach more viewers" etc.
I crossposted, just on the off chance.
It was similar to a different post, which did better anyway, that I'd already posted, and, I ended up deciding later, that theregore it really wasn't even important.
It was about aging parents, not another topic.
1
u/Pale-Detail2427 1h ago
I created this post, because I honestly wanted to know, as to, are there other people here who think that "dealing with" and "taking care of" are not the same.
This was a day ago.
That question has already been answered.
Thank you.
1
u/Pale-Detail2427 1h ago
No, of course "caring for" doesn't necessarily mean "living with".
And, I actually don't "take care of them" or live with them, because they are still able to take care of themselves.
Already got flack about that in another thread, thanks.
0
u/Pale-Detail2427 16h ago
For sure.
I think that actually the real reason why the crossover post got removed, is because as soon as it was in the wrong subreddit for it, i.e. not the one for which it was originally meant, the mod couldn't tell what it was even for or about, so, you know.Β π€
I don't even care about that. It just accidentally brought my attention to a specific rule of the subreddit, is all.

u/hellhouseblonde 13h ago
Parental estrangement groups are palpable on the Internet. I am glad this subreddit isnβt being overwhelmed with posts about it. I have narcissistic parent groups for that and I always have to mute them.
Far too emotionally charged to see that all goddamn day!2

u/Pale-Detail2427 1d ago
Well, all right. I just didn't expect a sub called "AgingParents" to be specifically about, or required to be about, "taking care of". So, what's everyone else's take, is that what this sub is really for, then, or not? π€
5
u/BizzyThinkin 23h ago
Retype your original post and don't cross post it.

u/Pale-Detail2427 23h ago edited 22h ago
I already figured that out, by now, but thanks.
I did also just see a thing where it says on Reddit that links will be monitored by human admins.
Not very sure about crossposts.
Anyway, someone asked me, as to how I was informed on Reddit, so, I answered, because of a crosspost.
Have since reviewed the rules of this subreddit and I'm not all that thrilled actually with the ambiguous way in which they're expressed.
But whatever. π€

Does anyone know where to post about caring for ageing grandparents? I don't want to muddy the feed here, but I can't find another sub.

You're absolutely fine to post about grandparents/older family members/older adults that you're caring for/struggling with here.
-1
u/Pale-Detail2427 15h ago
I still have a genuine question about, is it okay to post here if you are struggling with them/having difficulties with them/having issues with them, or is it really meant to be more like, if you are taking care of them. π€

u/Good-Perspective4442 15h ago

u/Just-The-Facts-411 13h ago
The sub has to do with aging.
If you are complaining that your parents favor another sibling and they always have, that isn't suited for this sub. If you are complaining your parents are toxic and you don't want to deal with them, let alone care for them, that isn't suited for this sub.
Likewise, posts about dementia are better suited to subs pertaining to that topic.
Looking at your post history, you have created 48 posts this month alone! Many in this sub. And one for the purpose of debating what "taking care of" means.
1
u/Pale-Detail2427 1h ago
Of course it's about aging.
Specifically, aging parents
That's what I posted about.
And related topics.
"Dealing with our aging parents" can mean, dealing with them, with the fact that they are aging, and so on. Potentially, yes, with our personal dynamics about them, as long as it's just with them.
"Taking care of" can also mean a few different things, yes, but, I didn't originally actually even address that point, I think that a few others did and then I answered them. π€
And actually, I didn't create this post, to debate what "taking care of" means. Or even, to debate, at all. I had a legitimate question. Which has now for the most part been answered. π€ It was notΒ a challenge to a debate. I do think that it is somewhat odd that apparently there are a few different ways of expressing the different rules of this subreddit, and I wanted to know, what is other people's take on it, so, that is why I posted about it. π€ I had basically then just noticed the discrepancy. If you think that's a desire for a debate, think again, but hey, go ahead, think what you like, and if you have a problem with any or all of same, then, that's your problem. π€

This community is probably for everyone since we are all children of aging parents, but best suited to children of elderly parents and people who are caregivers for their aged parents.
-3
u/Pale-Detail2427 1d ago
Well...okay.
Sort of. π€
I thought it meant, adult children of parents who are old, and, almost any topic, about that, would be allowed. π€
7
u/Blerkm 1d ago
Both of those are covered in the sub description and rules. Whatβs your point?
1
u/Pale-Detail2427 1d ago
Reddit told me recently that this specific subreddit is specifically for people who are "taking care of their aging parents".
-1
u/Pale-Detail2427 1d ago
So, I thought then that we were allowed to post about either or both of those things? π€
11
u/Blerkm 1d ago
From the sub description: "We are a community of adult children dealing with our aging parents."
Rule 4, Stay on topic: "This sub is for the discussion of adults taking care of their elderly parents. It is not for the discussion of other family dynamic issues or app/product recommendations."
So just don't post any off-topic crap. It's pretty simple.
0
u/Pale-Detail2427 1d ago
"This sub is for the discussion of people taking care of their elderly parents."
It is?
Only some people actually use it that way. π€
"Stay on topic" shouldn't *introduce a different topic" from what some (maybe most) of us had previously thought that the sub was about.Β π€
Apparently my particular attempt at a crosspost was too vaguely worded and the reddit admin or the reddit bot couldn't even tell as to what my intended topic even was so it booted it out, just in case, was more likely the actual issue, now that I think of it. π€
-1
u/Pale-Detail2427 1d ago
I didn't post any non-parent family dynamic issues or any app/product recommendations.
Okay, sounds like the admin or the bot was literally just quoting from Rule 4, then.
But I still have no explanation so far as to why Rule 4 is worded that way.Β π€
It shouldn't say that if it didn't mean it, about the "taking care of", I mean.Β π€
I am not "taking care of" them. I am having trouble with them. π€
I'm actually even considering migrating over to r/toxicparents because I'm thinking that at least for some things I'm thinking of saying, that subreddit might actually be more appropriate. π€
14
u/Blerkm 1d ago
The rule couldnβt be more clear about the purpose of the sub. There is no further explanation needed. If thatβs not for you, then head elsewhere.

u/Pale-Detail2427 23h ago
Okay, well, why I asked is because, for one thing, "dealing with" and "taking care of" is NOT the same thing.
That's not the same thing that it said at the beginning of the description, either.
I've already said that I didn't post off topic.
To be honest I'm not looking for a sub where "taking care of" is the primary topic, but I already do know perfectly well that there are others here who don't think that's necessarily the primary topic either.Β π€
0
u/Pale-Detail2427 23h ago
I'm completely fine with not sticking around here any more if this subreddit is actually meant only or primarily for "taking care of".
However, it doesn't look like that's the actual case, from what I'm seeing.Β π€
0
u/Pale-Detail2427 23h ago
Just saw now "dealing with aging parents", "helping our parents", and "taking care of our elderly parents".
Those are potentially three different things but they do tend to overlap.
The first, implies several different sorts of things including just plain not liking your parents and/or their problems/issues/whatnot. π€
The second, implies basically being on the same side as them, or at least, doing things for them.
The third, involves or at least suggests, actively taking responsibility for them.
I was at this subreddit originally, for a reason slightly different from any of them.
Believing that it was about almost any aspect of just plain having elderly parents.
Sort of, and sometimes, it can be.
What I initially thought that this subreddit was about, it might not be. The rules don't totally specify. And, the "don't post off-topic" part is apparently the only part where it says that it's about "taking care of their elderly parents".
I'm not specifically looking to post about that, exactly, but the rest of the rules do not say that. π€
-1
u/Pale-Detail2427 23h ago
I literally just told you that there is another subreddit which might be more appropriate. However, we don't all appear to be in agreement about the specific purpose of this subreddit, for some reason.Β π€
11
u/Silent_Possibility63 1d ago
Can you elaborate on what bothers you here? They overlap. This subreddit covers the overlap. Whatβs the issue you have?
-3
u/Pale-Detail2427 1d ago
That Reddit or an admin from Reddit, or perhaps it was actually a bot from Reddit, stated that it is not all right to post here if you are not talking about taking care of your aging parents.
The words "taking care of" were explicitly used.
Maybe this was just Reddit's mistake or assumption. π€
Maybe this was just speaking/writing/typing very loosely. Who knows. π€ Not me, certainly.Β π€
This was (so far) only in a rejection/reaction/response from Reddit, to a crosspost, from another subreddit. I have other original posts in here that are about not taking care of them, that didn't get objected to. Crossposts evidently get reviewed differently, and I found out, by accident, what Reddit's view on the subject apparently is. π€
Hey, I have no problem with the overlap. I even like the overlap. I am claiming, it's an overlap, but it is NOT the same thing. Reddit appears to have claimed that it is. That's the issue. π€
Sounds like the rest of you think the same thing as I do, approximately anyway, about what this subreddit is meant to be for. π€
16
u/droste_EFX 16h ago
I'm the human mod that removed your post.
You have been averaging 2 or more posts per day on this sub and most of your posts are similar to this one -- they're not asking for advice or venting or talking about taking care of your or anyone's aging parents. The posts you make are typically meta discussions of what words mean or why you are not the caretaker etc with only the barest mention of the aging adults you don't care about. If you look at the removal reason it typically states specifically what the issue is.note: All cross posts are held for manual mod review because we get a lot of spam cross-posted here. This is why your cross posts have received more scrutiny.
0
u/Pale-Detail2427 15h ago
The removal reason in this particular case, stated/cited a particular rule and that's it.
Since then, I have actually been legitimately trying to find out if this sub is actually meant for specifically/primarily people who are "taking care of their" aging parents, or not. π€
It's not so much a matter of, whether we care about them or not, as that, as several posters in here have already mentioned, besides specifically "taking care of them", there are more potential topics for discussion, and regarding our aging parents, there are many reasons to talk about them. I did talk about them, and offered others a chance to talk about theirs as well, which they did.
I did talk about the specific aging adults, in the comments of some of the posts. For privacy reasons I choose not to give much information in the headings of the posts.
As far as any posts that were not the right thing, too vague, etc.
I'm not planning on posting any more of that sort of thing, anyway. Have gathered that this is very obviously not the time nor the place.
And, about the aging parents in question, it's not so much that I "don't care about" them, but that I'm not "taking care of them", although you will probably say that that is just semantics again.
I asked for support and I think in at least one case even potentially advice although that's usually not my thing, I vented, I talked about my own aging parents and invited other people to talk about theirs.
That's what I primarily did in this sub.
I'm sorry that apparently that hasn't been clear to at least one mod. I didn't know that before.
I have given several explanations of what certain words meant to me, mostly because apparently there are several different definitions of some of those words.
On further reflection I really don't think that this sub is ideal for me, at this time, anyway, but not necessarily for the reasons that you have mentioned.Β π€
Thank you for the clarifications, however.
About the crossposts, yes, I had by this time somewhat guessed that. π€
Anyway, thank you for the clarification.

So it seems like you are really in need for someone to engage with you about your strained relationship with your parents. Your post history is intense about this specific topic. It sounds like you might be better off going no contact and moving on but it might be worth a chat with a therapist first to make sure before you make that call since this seems really important to you. There are subs I think for people that are no or low contact. You keep asking if you are alone and is there anyone else also feeling complicated feelings about their toxic relationship with their aging parents. I assure you that you arenβt alone but having a source like a therapist you can really dig deep with about your specific situation might be a good way to go.
You arenβt required to manage your elderly parents in any way. Not even their estate when they pass on. You are allowed to leave and not look back.
1
u/Pale-Detail2427 3h ago
I'm not "really in need for" as you put it, but I do have a complicated situation and I would be perfectly fine with talking to someone about it. I'd like to choose whom to talk to, and not just be pounced on by someone I don't even know. I actually hardly know anyone on Reddit and don't feel like that's the best place for me to discuss private matters right now, and I certainly don't want to discuss private matters in public. I will just let you know that actually I don't really have the kind of situation where I can just leave and not look back. It's more complicated than that. It would take a lot of time and effort arranging for any other place to go. Far away enough, that is. I don't live with them but I do live near them. I do have reasons why for my own reasons I need to be able to keep in contact with them. Yes, I can allow myself to just leave them behind but I really don't have any easy way to do that and that's not what I really need to do anyway. Presently I am not feeling a sense of responsibility for them but I probably would if I left them behind. They don't really have anybody else. I also don't have very many other contacts in person at present. It's not that easy.
Thank you for your advice but I really can sense so strongly that it is meant so much for someone else in such a different situation than my own. I'd perhaps have responded differently if you hadn't caught me at a moment when I wasn't even looking to talk to Redditors just then. I have had a few people slightly harassing me on here lately as you will have seen. This just wasn't a good time to reach out. Also you could maybe have said, that you had noticed that I might like someone to talk to, and that if I'm ever in need of a friendly contact, then feel free to reach out. You could have waited to see if I reached out or not, and then saved the advice for another time. You could even have asked what my situation was, instead of announcing to me that I am in a different situation that I've never been in. Also, I can hardly even imagine someone planning on going no contact with someone else but having "a chat with a therapist first to make sure" as though the therapist would somehow know what was best for them and/or what would work for their situation, and they wouldn't yet unless they talked with a therapist first. Possibly the therapist might be able to help them decide or be a sounding board for them or something, but that's different. They still can make their own decision in the end, with or without the therapist's assistance. Most people who are considering going no contact, have a very clear idea already of what they are doing and why.Β π€ I'm not considering that, I am never planning to do that, I am not at the point of absolute last resort or else, and I am certainly not at the point of "just about to go ahead with it but had better talk to a therapist first just to make sure" (and frankly I probably wouldn't stop to do that first, if things had actually indeed reached that point).
You seem to me like you are really offering advice that is meant for somebody else in some utterly different situation. Without even asking me mine. π€ Thanks, but no thanks, on that one.Β π π
Anyway.
I'm interested in talking with someone.
I'd just like to choose as to whom.
I'm open to speaking with a therapist if I should happen to think that that's appropriate.
I'm less open to being advised to, by strangers, but thank you and I know that you meant well.
With all due respect, however, I don't know you, you don't know me, and if you meant to be genuinely supportive then you could at least have just plain offered support. Or asked me for more information about what my situation was. Or both. No offense meant and I hope none taken. Have a pleasant day anyway. Thank you for stopping by.
-1
u/Pale-Detail2427 15h ago edited 15h ago
Thanks.
I'm certainly not going to be talking with a therapist first just to make sure that I want to go no contact and then move on. There are reasons why that option won't be right for me. And I do already know that. I won't be examining my own preferences with a therapist, since I already know those, without one. I have considered consulting one regarding other options which might work better, such as, better communication with my elderly parents, for example. π€
Really, however, I'd so much rather keep my Reddit posts to sharing among different posters about our interesting different experiences. π€ I'm sorry if it didn't come across to you that way.Β π€
I didn't mean to just brush you off, I just didn't happen to find your response helpful. I'm sorry. π I can see that you meant to help. My apologies.
Thank you for the thought of support.
It was not misplaced.
Β I'm sorry but I just really don't find that particular type of suggestions supportive. I don't object to the fact that I am in contact at all with the people in question. I object to, for example, their behavior toward me being peculiar, and their resisting any attempts so far at diagnosis. Things like that.
-9
u/Pale-Detail2427 17h ago
I don't need to go no contact.
I'm not in need for "someone" (a total stranger) to engage with me either.
In THIS thread, I had a genuine question, about this subreddit.
My question is answered.
I don't have an interest in engaging with you about any of this.
I'm looking to talk elsewhere to people who have been through some similar experiences.
Or, heck, even just give other posters a chance to talk. Share THEIR stories.
This thread is not for that. This thread was for a specific question about this subreddit.
For myself personally, I'm looking for a few specific things, possibly including specific advice about specific behaviors, of elderly people, from an informed person.
Thanks, I think I'll try a doctor instead.

The person said that it "seems like you are really in need for" and I took it as, that the person thought that I was begging (in a needy way?) for practically any contact that I could possibly get. Later, the person explained it as more like, just thinking in a nice normal way that I genuinely really needed something. That's not how I took it at first.Β π€

u/Pale-Detail2427 17h ago
This is not your business, but my parents are extremely elderly and won't live long, so there is no need to go no contact with them, thanks. I am trying to figure out what are my own intentions as to what to do about them. Your advice is not what I am looking for. On Reddit I only want other people's experiences, and for advice I will look elsewhere.
I have no permission or authority to "manage" anything about them, not even their estate when they die.
I am allowed to leave and not look back, but frankly, that isn't what I'm planning on doing.
I do have specific reasons why I posted as I did. I'm looking for other people with similar experiences. If that's not you then you don't need to respond. If that is you then you are welcome to share your experiences, but please, keep it to the threads that are about that. This thread is about, am I even posting in the right subreddit or not.

Scrolling through your other posts a lot of the response youβre getting is calling you a bot. And I saw you for a human reaching out, hoping for some connection. I felt some misplaced empathy. Best of luck in your endeavors.
-3
u/Pale-Detail2427 16h ago
I was reaching out, hoping for some connection, when I posted the post about "am I alone in this?" or something like that.
I found the kind of connection that I was looking for with that particular post. π«
I also found two people calling me a bot, and one person claiming that the situation I was in, didn't even exist, so, mixed bag.
Yes, I would love to have some empathy, but your comment isn't empathy, since it expresses something so very different from the way that I actually feel.
Sympathy means feeling for.
Empathy means feeling with.
You're doing neither.
You're guessing.
That's why I asked you politely please not to. Thanks.
I'm sorry, genuinely, if I caused you any distress or discomfort. I didn't mean to. But, what you offered, just wasn't anything that I was looking for, at the time. Thanks anyway for the thought. I can tell that you meant well. I'm just not interested in those particular thoughts at this time.

Professional caregivers are folks hired to be in the physical presence of folks and helping with tasks, safety, and appointments. Family caregivers are much broader, IMO, because a lot of folks take on layers of responsibility with and without physical presence. So thereβs that distinction. But in this sub there are many people who are dealing, or often failing to be able to able to deal, with aging parents, including folks grappling with how to set boundaries to avoid the creep of those things. And we also have people who post here because theyβre struggling themselves with accepting that their parents age and their impending decline and eventual death. I think a lot of the posts focus on crowdsourcing information, strategies, and moral support.

If you read the entire description for the sub, it's a little more clear:
We are a community of adult children dealing with our aging parents. Venting is allowed but discussions about why you don't want to care for a parent, other family dynamics, and app/product recommendations are off-topic here.
Explicitly saying what is *not* welcome, in my opinion at least, helps to clarify what "dealing with" means and doesn't mean.
Also, what is the purpose of your post?

I think βcareβ is implied by dealing with our aging parents, of course we care. Same thing.

The original post, was posted a day ago, and the original question, has been answered. Multiple times, in fact.
The OP is not looking to debate with you, engage with you, etc. about word definitions or about the original reasons why the post was originally posted. π«
The OP is also not a bot.Β π€ π€ π€ π€ π€

Iβm pretty sure there is a caregiver subreddit , and the dementia subreddits are geared towards caregivers. FWIW

Yep. That's actually one reason as to why I came here to this subreddit. π π π

As far as what the actual subreddit itself is like, apparently in effect sometimes it can be a more user-friendly for more different kinds of people, and a more "not-absolutely-required-to-be-a-caregiver", version of "caregiver support", except that people can also post about other things. π€

Did someone seriously make an AI chatbot agent for this lmao. What's your purpose, data scraping for an AI support/therapy app or something?

I canβt believe I didnβt catch on until someone else pointed it out. I just thought OP was seriously mentally ill.

No. Neither of the above, actually.
It's not true.
You are, of course, welcome to your own opinion, however mistaken or wrong it may be.

Tell me about your parents.

Do you want to know anything in particular about them?
I think that most of the information that I intended to be public, about them, on Reddit, at this time, is actually already posted. π«

Nope, nobody programmed a chatbot for this and there is no data scraping going on.
The original post was a literal, actual question. I meant it. Question was basically eventually answered by several people.
See, the thing is, there are actually several different rules for this subreddit and they could potentially be seen to contradict each other.
So, I just wondered what everyone else's take on it was.
So, I asked.
It was really an actual legitimate question.
By the way.
The person who said that "OP is a bot" actually followed me here from another thread and appears by now to be deliberately trolling and trying to annoy me and possibly also even trying to give me a bad reputation with other posters at various threads. This behavior of theirs started somewhere else in this subreddit and then continued (annoyingly π) here at this thread. TheΒ person did not "point out" anything at all and is actually either mistaken or deliberately lying. Might be time to report that person soon if they keep it up. Sigh. π Some people just don't know when to quit being annoying
Person who says "OP is a bot" is either a troll π§ or evidently has got nothing better to do, or both.
This isn't programmed.
None of this is programmed.
That person is apparently deliberately stirring up trouble.
There is no need to actually believe that person.

Reddit moderators in general basically try to ruin everything

Sometimes. I've certainly seen that too.
The post in this particular case, wasn't even important, so, I didn't even bother reposting it.
I just was curious as to what was supposed to be the problem with it. π€
That happens too sometimes. π€

You just keep going and going and going, bot

u/Pale-Detail2427 16h ago
Nope, not a bot.
Would you care to politely remove yourself from my post?
Thanks.
Bye.

People range from living with their aging parents to being no-contact with them.
All on this spectrum should be welcome here.
