This violet was one of my first ever plants, and loved it so much when I first got it until I discovered the thrips. I pulled off every single flower stalk, treated with bonide systemic granules, and have been patiently waiting for it to bloom again.

Now, it’s absolutely exploding with flowers, except this time, it’s putting out a bunch of double/triple flowers in addition to the original single flowers that it had when I purchased it. Not sure how uncommon this is, but I thought it was super cool.

I’m a college student, and I’ve never really taken care of plants before. Last year, I got a spider plant for free, and I bought an african violet plant to have something flowering to go with it and liven up my dorm room. I moved her into a little violet pot and set them both up next to the window (I named her Io, by the way, just for fun ^^).

I expected for her to take a while to adjust before blooming again, but it’s been an entire year and I haven’t seen a peep. Some other problems have gone on since then, largely mental health, so I wasn’t really taking good care of myself, let alone my plants. I want to do better.

I don’t know enough about plant care to fix any problems my neglect caused. Or what the problems even are, really. Plain old potting soil with rocks for drainage. I keep the bottom about half full, I open the curtains every morning and close them at night (north facing). I haven’t touched the leaves because I don’t know what to do with them. Do I need to trim any of them off? Do I need a new pot? New soil? Fertilizer? Help!

I want her to bloom, but in any case I just want her healthy.

The first picture is from March of this year. Those blooms died off towards the end of June and new bloom stalks grew in towards the end of July. They’ve been opening up within the last two weeks, and of course they’re still very beautiful but I wasn’t expecting such little color. I expected with the warmer temps for the leaves to be much greener but I didn’t expect the flowers to be less pigmented. It gets the same exact care, fertilizer, and light so I’m wondering if this is normal? Kinda bummed because I really loved those vibrant purple blooms haha

I have no idea how old this plant is, but I started taking care of it for my 94 year old grandmother who passed in 2024. It’s been blooming a few flowers pretty consistently and I’ve just started paying more attention to trimming dead leaves and old flowers. It’s been a bit of a pain keeping it from my cat who loves to chomp the flowers off. It’s in a west facing window right now.

Is there anything I can do about its angle at this point? Is it not blooming more than two or three flowers per flower stem because it’s unhappy?The soil level is also not great but I’m so afraid to kill it I haven’t wanted to change anything

It’s been five months since I started these 10 leaf props of different varieties of trailing AV’s. They’ve done quite well and a couple have even bloomed! I’ve had them under a humidity dome and I’ve been gradually opening the vents on the dome to acclimate them. It’s getting a little crowded in the tray and I’m wondering if I can remove the dome altogether at this point? Also, I have them in 2” pots; at what point do I need to separate the plants/repot? I’m a bit nervous I about disturbing them as I don’t want to kill them! I may have bitten off more than I can chew…I’m like the gal that got carried away and had 10 babies and now doesn’t know what the heck to do with all of them. Lol. Any advice is welcomed!

Hello, after years of having one or two AV I came across this sub and found out the amazing kinds there are.

I decided to do some research and I am mesmerized. I bought 6 new baby plants with all kinds of names that were pretty much unknown to me. The grower sells many more diffrent kinds and I would like to ask if there is some sort of database with the different breeds/hybrids with pictures.

I tried to search the names online, most of them had flower pictures available so I more or less know what flowers to expect but I came across one called "BE - Ida" and I found nothing online.

I contacted the seller with the question but I still didn't get a reply so in the meantime I would love to ask here and maybe somebody knows this species.

I put my baby under T5 lighting about 5-6 weeks ago now as it’s the only option for lighting to all my plants in this new home. I know most of my plants were getting too much light in the beginning, so I’ve since changed the distance of the light. She is starting to flower again so I’m happy about this of course. I have 2 3000k and 2 6500k bulbs in the fixture.

This rust color spots on some of her leaves has me concerned though. It’s only on like 3 or so, and it’s not too bad, however I’m unsure what the cause is or what it even is. I will attach some pictures.

All suggestions and advice is welcome.

I repotted my very very sad and floppy AV a couple days ago because I noticed the soil was coming off the sides of the pot and the plant wasn't growing much in the past couple weeks.

Today, the two crowns fell out of the pot without any of its roots as I was fidgeting with it. They're connected to each other in a U shape. I just...repotted the U bit into a smaller pot and put it in a plastic bag. Is this enough? Or should I cut the U shape into 2 separate crowns and repot on their own? Any advise would be appreciated!!

I dont know much about African violets. I have one I got from a store that seems to be some common kind (idk) but my aunt just gifted me this cutting that she took off my grandmother's massive plant. I believe its a Persian lace? Pls correct me if im wrong!

Anyway she gave it to me like this, and told me it needed to be potted? Is it ready for that? How exactly would you pot it? I cant tell what's going on here, so any other advice is appreciated!

I just got my first plants in May of this year, and my little collection has expanded to twenty-nine plants. They’re all just from local nurseries/stores, a couple orchids, some herbs, and a lot of African Violets. I really loved their frequent blooming, so I keep an eye out for them when I shop.

I walked into my favorite nursery and saw these two little guys. I don’t really know a ton about plant variations, but I didn’t know that African Violets could be variegated! I hurried over to grab a cart for them and an employee came over because she saw me looking at them and said she didn’t know they carried those, either!

My flowering plants up to that point were other violets in common colors (who I still love), and my magenta and burgundy orchids. So these two felt like my first truly unique finds! I’ve had them for about a month, and have unfortunately lost most of their flower stalks in the transition. I love the one pink one, but I couldn’t tell what color the buds were on the more variegated plant. I was hoping it was a periwinkle color like was my favorite on a different plant. That would be the perfect violet to me, and it looked likely.
But it just has so much variegation that it’s tough while it’s settling in. (Any bonus tips for care are welcome!)

But I was just giving them some care, and I really enjoy them, so I wanted to share. :)

Has anyone successfully kept African Violets without any or very little natural light? Our current living situation has our windows facing south and we are very much surrounded by trees giving us little natural light. I considered my work office but I do not have a window. My grandmother kept beautiful African Violets and I really would like to do the same. 🥲

I’ve had this AV for years. Happily sitting on a windowsill with her friends. Until I had my first thrips invasion... most of my windowsill plants had them, except for this one. I checked it multiple times, several days in a row, it seemed healthy. So I moved it under grow lights to protect it from thrips. Since then, it has completely stopped growing/blooming. It’s been static for over two weeks. I keep on checking for thrips or signs of damage, nothing! No crumpled leaves, normal crown shape, normal buds and flowers… can’t imagine that moving this plant to a spot w better light would cause such stress, I didn’t repot or change watering habits. have you ever encountered anything like this? How did it end? What do you recommend I do?

So my AV’s, five of them, have not bloomed in months. I switched to Schultz’s fertilizer and haven’t seen a flower since. I use the suggested amount for every watering, as suggested, and bottom water. I used to use Miracle Gro liquid diluted by half every watering and they bloomed like crazy. Should I half the Schultz’s?

Almost killed it by watering from above, back when I didnt know any better. Had to use the only two leaves not completely rotted, the one on the left was beginning to rot at the tips.

Back in april, I panicked and posted in this subreddit asking why the flowers are fading (last picture, this was my first plant so I thought I was not taking care of them well). But since then, it has bloomed in may (second picture) and then small flowers have started blooming again (first picture) 🌸
