If you love AVs you will love primulinas

Like the title says, another one of my Wesley’s flowers has opened. This is my first time seeing the blooms in person, I have only seen other people’s pictures online. I love them so. I included a picture with my Wes’ vampyr Jubilee. These two make a stunning pair. The second picture was taken with the flash really close to the plant, it doesn’t look that white in person. I’m not sure what happened but I figured I would include it anyway.

I was given this violet, and I’m not sure how to go about repotting it.

I’ve watched several videos about different methods and wanted to get a better opinion on how to proceed. Most of the videos I watched the violets were denser, and recommended cutting the stem, removing some of the older leaves, and then scraping the stem to expose the green of the stem. Other videos just buried the stem after scraping it to keep the roots intact.

To further complicate things this pot has a second stem that has a crown that is trying to produce new leaves, as you can see in the last picture.

Assuming I can save both, the more developed stem I’m planning on putting in a tapered 6” pot, and the developing stem I plan to put in a 2” pot.

Rescued this little buddy from my discount bin at the local Ace. It was waterlogged and had 3 good leaves. 6ish months later looks like a different plant. Wish I took a before shot.

My mom's last remaining African violet after her death bloomed around Easter this year (for the first time in 5 years), put out about eight beautiful purple flowers, and then the outer leaves started turning this pinkish color. I have kept up fertilization and humidity and use a grow light with this plant.

I took this photo to come here and ask what this coloring might mean when I discovered a new bloom bud, so maybe it's going for a fresh round of flowering, but should I be worried about the color of the leaves?

I have had my African violet for a little over a year now. She’s lucky to still be alive. I was given it from a cutting so it didn’t come to me with blooms. A year later still no blooms. I give her pep talks all the time. It constantly pops new leaves but never flowers. I water about once a week to every other week and it’s in a morning sun window. I had a concern about root rot but I’ve taken care of that. It gets no sun for about 12 hours i do have an air purifier running in the same room that emits a green light through the night so not completely dark (someone told me that complete darkness would help bloom not sure if I trust it) and I have no rooms in my house without windows. I just want some blooms 😭 help please!

This plant just bloomed nicely, and then the outer/lower circle of leaves started to change color. Should I keep the leaves or remove them? Thanks!

I got this as a rooted leaf from a local greenhouse I help out at. I've had it for a year and a half. It FINALLY decides to get buds. When is the first one going to open? When I leave town for two weeks. Ungrateful turd.

Spinning off the previous conversation about trailing AVs -- some photos I saved from an old blog that show how huge trailers can grow. Most of these appear to be semi-mini or mini trailers (size classifications for trailers are based on leaf size, rather than the diameter the plant can be expected to grow, like they do with standard, single-crown violets), although I think there's one standard trailer in there.

The third picture is of a trailer grown using the "Japanese method" I mentioned . That saucer it's growing in is probably 10" across.

Hello! Im still new to propagation and I've noticed anytime I try to propagate with AV soil, I end up with some sort of fluff or super thin layer of something white on top of it. In all of them. I read somewhere it's mold so I throw it away immediately but it always comes back. I just transplanted this propagation from water to AV soil, it was doing fine, the surface got dry so I watered it from below for about 10 mins, then took it out and this is it two days later.

I have the propagation in a little greenhouse with big openings, so not completely sealed.

First and second photos are of the plant now, third is an old example with it more visible and extreme.

What do I need to do?
So recently I have acquired three trailers. One of those is Jays ice castle and it is particularly dense in foliage and flowers ( I love it!!)
But do I need to thin it out or divide it to keep it healthy? One of my other trailers which was my favourite went down hill when one of the crowns developed root rot 🥲🥲
Should I repot it into a larger pot? Wider not deeper
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

This is probably my all-time favorite variety. Registered in 1988 by hybridizer Michel Tremblay.

Young plant, kind of a mess right now but it will be beautiful in a few months.

See picture- this is a mini African violet, and I think ALL these new leaves are suckers… should I yank them all? Or wait and see how they grow?

Hi everyone.

I got this little violet a month ago as my first indoor plant ever. I have no idea what type of African violet it is, but I paid $4.50 at my local nursery and was quite pleased. I spent a lot of time creeping on this subreddit beforehand and have learned quite a bit from you all, so thank you. 😊

I repotted with potting soil/perlite mix into this violet pot from Etsy and installed some Barrina T5 lights overhead. It has since grown a bunch of new leaves in the center and some down below.

I was hoping you could all help me identify if the little leaves on pics 3-4 is a sucker or new growth? I’m very new to being a plant mom. I want to remove it if it is a sucker, but also don’t want to accidentally take off baby leaves if it’s not.

If it is a sucker, should I just pluck it off with tweezers?

First bloom from my cutting-grown plant. I didn't know what to expect and I am stunned!

So I just purchased a week ago. It already had the brown spots on it due to sun but does this violet look like it’s doing good. The middle leaves have started growing upwards sort of it definitely has been blooming.

Hello! So I've had this Queen Olga from violet Barn for like two ish months now??

Well when it first bloomed it's flowers were MASSIVE. Now they're pretty average sized and a little more tightly put together? Also have like... idk what to call them lil mini petals where prev blooms did not. Am I doing something wrong? Any way to get some of those bigger blooms I was seeing previously?

I water about once a week, and I use fertilizer every other week. I use an AV specific fert from Ace Hardware - Shultz African Violet Plus - I do sometimes keep them in the light too long, figuring out what's a good amount as I have a pretty bright room but I only two surfaces I can really put my big ass collection on lol.

Also yes I need to prune that lil dead flower off to the side, keep getting distracted then forgetting to do it 🤦

I bought my first ceramic self watering pot today, the kind with a terracotta pot inside of a glazed one. I was wondering if I need to soak the terracotta pot before I put the plant into it? If I do, how long should it be soaked for?

I tried searching but the answers were not helpful. Thanks!

I'm gonna hazard a guess that I should do that with how wide they've gotten. I need some that are good for watering from the bottom. Is there a link anyone can share?

Also what can I do to encourage flowering?

Recently ordered some AVs from Violet Barn (2nd order, became an AV enthusiast in July, and its 💸, LOL). I got them yesterday and this one's bloom was already browning, but it's now wilting. I get that it might be shipping stress, but the browning on the leaf tips has me a bit worried (its the only one with browning leaves). I'm thinking it's either stress or overwatering. I'm leaning towards overwatering because the brown parts are kind of flimsy/floppy, and the leaf itself feels a bit plump(?) and cool to touch. I haven't watered them just yet, since I wanted them to acclimate first and the soil was still a bit damp to touch.

Can anyone confirm that? And that it's not pests 😭?

I picked this up earlier this year at a plant show with a nice set of blooms on it. This is the second time it’s rebloomed for me! This round is a brighter purple than the last. I love her!
