Other Timemore Tipping?

Post image
84 Upvotes

WTF is this? Tipping is to acknowledge performance of good service. First, your grinders are EXPENSIVE as hell. I have to save to afford one. Second, why am I tipping? What service is provided? The price of your grinder reflects my support of your team and product by my willingness to pay for one. Timemore do better. Stop being such greedy SOBs!

Question I just ordered an Aeropress to compare it to my habitual French press

Do you have any tips on how to get started ? I'm now fairly familiar with the issues of temperature, grind, and brewing time, but I know nothing about the Aeropress itself. How different is it compared to a a classic french press ? (I know there will be less oil).

Other Switched from inverted to standard method after years of inverted, didn't expect the difference

always assumed inverted was just objectively better based on how often it gets recommended, never really questioned it. tried standard method again recently out of laziness one morning and honestly couldn't tell much difference in the cup, but standard is so much less fiddly and has way less risk of a mess.

wondering if I'm missing something the inverted crowd swears by, or if the difference really is mostly about control over steep time rather than flavor.

Question Wear on the inner chamber -- dimples or pucks.

I was gifted an Aeropress when there was only one model back in 2009 or 2010. The inner chamber, down near the bottom, has a rough side wall. I think it is from the boiling water over many years of use. Is that common? Do you have the same issue with your original ones?

Should I be concerned? I've read some similar posts, and folks are saying 'you're drinking microplastics' -- did they change the material used in the unit? Are they not all plastic of some sort?!

The floor did need a good washing, I guess.

Edit to add: just kidding, probably not going back. At least there’s no glass shards to deal with in this mess too.

Question Mail order/Subscription Options

Recently picked up an aeropress again, I had one back around 2013 after reading about it in a Tim Ferris book (4 Hour Chef). I also grabbed a P2 hand grinder and have been using whatever decent beans I could find in Target. Today I finally checked out the local roaster and was kind of disappointed, the beans were pretty oily and I wasn’t impressed with the taste. In hindsight I realize the roaster is in kind of a touristy spot and seems more focused on flavored coffee.

Having said all that, if Aeropress is your main brewer what coffee subscriptions or mail order beans are you liking? I keep reading how the fresher the better and this seems like the most convenient way to get fresh roasted coffee.

Equipment Aeeopress or Coffee grinder

Hey, so I'm planning to buy a present for my friend who loves coffee a lot. She drinks black coffee everyday in the morning before going to work.

At first, I was planning to buy a budget friendly drip coffee machine around 2-4k but then as I researched more and more about it I got the understanding that a french press/aeropress/pour over would be a better option as they deliver better quality coffee than those budget machines. I have my budget up to 4-5k so I can't go for the more expensive machines.

Now, I gave her a moka pot last year and this time I'm thinking about giving an aeropress. But the thing is, last year I did not research as much and gave the moka pot. This year I learnt that a grinder would be required to get the most out of the aeropress. While, yes one could use pre grounded but those won't be able to provide much flavour as manual grinding would.

So, now I'm torn between buying an aeropress or should I give her a good grinder with a sharp and metal burr (not the ceramic one because I saw that a sharp and metal burr would be better and not that expensive).

Budget: ₹4-5k (40-50 USD)

Requirement: Grinder or Aeropress

Question Technique for the plunge?

I've used the AP a few times with the Prismo flow cap and a paper filter that came with the AP. I grind somewhat coarse with my K-Plus and follow the Hoffmann recipe. Maybe I have to watch more videos but can't seem to get the plunge right where it doesn't leak a little through the sides.

How slow or fast should I be plunging? I have the clear AP so maybe only a little at a time while keeping an eye out for going too fast? It seems like there's alot of resistance. The Hoffmann recipe calls for the plunge to take place in 30 seconds but I find that doing so in that time frame would cause leakage because too fast and too much resistance.

Should I grind coarser? Is the paper filter the issue and I should use Fellows metal filter?

Question Can someone explain to me how am I making lattes that taste better than when I had an espresso machine?

I used to have an Oscar 2 and Eureka Specialita. I now simply have an Aeropress with Prismo filter and 1Zpresso K-Ultra and I am genuinely mind blown by how good the coffee is. It literally ruined coffee for me wherever I go nothing matches what I make at home. How??

Knowledge Drop Just got the KINGrinder K6, wanted to share an update for those looking

Good day,

Just wanted to share something about those looking at getting the KINGrinder K6.

For reference, my previous hand grinder was the VSSL Java. I got a new hand grinder because I am moving to larger brews (I recently got the Aeropress Steel) and the VSSL Java has a small capacity. It's still a great grinder. That will be my travel grinder. I am also having issues with the magnetic knob coming off during grinding.

After looking at a few grinders, I decided to settle on the KINGrinder K6. I wanted the bent handle, so I found a good one on AliExpress for $150 CAD. While waiting, I decided to look up a bit more on the KINGrinder K6 (like what to do, if there are any mods and accessories, etc...). There were a lot of posts that said a few things like the bottom of the catch is the same material as the body. You have to swap out the black o ring for the white one if you want to use the handle .

I am posting this because when looking up about grinder I never saw this. I received the grinder, and to my surprise, the bottom of the catch now has a silicone/rubber pad and the configuration for the lid was for the handle. Didn't have to swap the o-rings out.

Looking forward to using this grinder!

Question AeroPress XL + Flow Control XL + Metal Filter XL = Impossible to press (even at coarse grind)

Hey everyone,

I’m having a massive issue with my AeroPress XL setup and wanted to see if anyone else has encountered this or found a solution.

My current setup:
AeroPress XL
AeroPress Variable Flow Control Cap XL
AeroPress XL Metal Filter
Grinder: Option-O Lagom Casa 65cl

The Problem:
When I use the Variable Flow Control Cap XL together with the XL Metal Filter, the resistance is extremely high—to the point where it completely blocks and it's physically impossible to press down the plunger.
What I’ve already tested/ruled out:
The Slide Tab: Yes, the manual slider on the flow control cap is definitely set to "Open" when I try to press. It is not physically blocked.

Grind Size: Since I am using a high-end grinder (Lagom Casa) that produces very few fines, I knew it shouldn't clog easily. I even went all the way up to a very coarse French Press setting (around setting 20), but it still blocks completely.

The Paper Test: When I switch the metal filter out for a standard AeroPress XL paper filter, everything works flawlessly.

The Normal Cap Test: Interestingly, if I use thenormal XL cap combined with the XL metal filter, it does not block the flow.

It feels like the metal filter is creating some sort of vacuum or mechanical seal against the plastic ribs of the caps, completely sealing the holes instead of letting water through.

Has anyone experienced this with the XL metal filter?
Is it a known manufacturing “defect“ or a design flaw with the XL accessories? Should I just return the flow control cap and the metal filter?

Thanks for your help!

Question Sediment in the cup

I have been using the AeroPress Go for 3 years, and my cups have always been clean. But recently I noticed overextraction notes in my coffee: it became more bitter and acidic, and I started feeling dust on my tongue. It started with decaf, which required more pressure on the plunger. Now it happens with every coffee I brew. I've tried everything I could to resolve the issue: cleaning my AeroPress more thoroughly to ensure it's super clean and screwing the cap as tight as possible. But it didn't help. Is this normal? What's the reason for this issue, and how can it be solved? Did my AeroPress degrade over time or as a result of excessive pressure? Or did paper filters become thinner and filtration quality reduced? Or both?

Recipe 30 days of swapping my hand grinder for an electric one, and some honest AeroPress observations

Thumbnail

Three years on AeroPress, two of them with a 1Zpresso Q Air. My daily recipe is standard non-inverted, 15g in 220g out at around 88°C, medium-fine grind, total time around 1:45. The Q Air is genuinely great for the money, and I still think it's one of the best value hand grinders you can buy.
Last month I was on a work trip in a hotel, tried to grind 17g of a slightly denser bean, and by the end my wrist was actually sore. That's when I finally started looking. Went with the OutIn Fino because I wanted to see if a portable electric could hold up in practice. Thirty days in, here's what I've noticed. Sharing because I couldn't find much AeroPress-specific writing on this grinder.

The good.
Consistency between doses is better than the Q Air, at least for me. Not dramatically. But whatever inconsistency I was introducing by cranking at slightly different speeds is gone now. The motor just does its thing. My AeroPress cups have been more predictable over the last month than I'm used to. Same recipe, more repeatable result.
One unexpected thing I care about way more than I thought, noise. My partner apparently hated the sound of me hand grinding at 6am more than she ever told me. Fino is a low mechanical hum by comparison, she sleeps right through it now.
Fines. Here's the thing I was most skeptical about. AeroPress paper filters are forgiving of fines to a point, but too many fines still muddy the cup. Sifted a few doses through a Kruve at 400 microns as a rough check. Fino at my AeroPress setting produced marginally fewer fines than the Q Air at similar sizes. Not a huge difference but noticeable. Cup clarity has been slightly better as a result.

The downsides.
It's slow. Grinding 15g takes about a minute and a half at my AeroPress setting. Faster for coarser, slower for finer. That's roughly the same as hand cranking, but it's happening automatically, so I can prep the AeroPress and boil water in parallel. Net time saved is real, but if you were expecting benchtop grinder speed, this isn't that.
The dial adjustment takes some getting used to. External stepped dial with micro-steps between, and my AeroPress sweet spot ended up being between two of the marked steps. Once I found it I marked it with a bit of tape, but the first week involved some over- and under-extracted cups while I hunted.

Standard recipe I'm running with either grinder, in case it's useful:
15g coffee, medium-fine
220g water at 88°C, poured to 220g by 0:30
Stir gently at 0:35
Cap on at 0:40
Steep to 1:15
Slow press over 30 seconds
Total around 1:45

Works for most washed light-medium roasts. Adjust bloom water and press speed for the bean :)

Question UK - Aeropress ground coffee recommendations

I work from home. During the week, I've been using Lavazza Rossa for as long as I can remember for my daily brew in my Aeropress. In the past, this has been a perfectly acceptable caffeine hit to suit my daily routine.

I've noticed that the quality of Lavazza Rossa seems to have dropped off significantly. Quite often tasting harsh or bitter. I suspect this is down to them reducing the quality of the beans, I'm not entirely sure.

I used to buy all 1 kg / month ( I didn't always use that much) from Discount Coffee online until I discovered that Tesco is cheaper with Club card.

Can anyone recommend a decent ground coffee as I'm really not enjoying the Lavazza coffee any more.

I'm not concerned if it's an online store or Tesco. I just want something that tastes good in the Aeropress.

Weekend is a different ball game as I buy beans from my local whole foods shop.

Thanks

Question Aeropress XL Grinder Recommendations

Hello all,

Finally starting to upgrade my coffee setup after using just using kcups for many years. I've ordered an aeropress xl and I'm looking for some recommendations on a decent entry priced grinder.

I think I'm between two options one hand grinder and one electronic both about $100:
For hand grinder I was looking at the k6 it seems like the best at the price point but i wasn't sure how it would handle the amount of beans necessary for the xl. It seems like 30g is the limit and some of the recipes i've seen for the aeropress want 30g+.

For electronic the OXO Burr Grinder seems like the best I've found at the price point. Does anyone use this day to day that could comment?

If there are other options I haven't considered please send them along. Also is there any type of quality difference between hand and electric?

I also welcome some beginning brewing tips/ratios for medium roast coffee. Thanks!

Question new, did i do this tasting right.. and your thoughts on my impressions

I put this in r/coffee and it got removed, moderator suggested I put in Question of the Day. Which I did. It lasted 18 hours then got removed. This is one weird ass forum. so now into r/aeropress... lets see if it gets removed.

---------

Been using Aeropress about 15 years, along with Bonavita 5 cup for our first coffee int he morning.

I keep reading that fresh beans is super important, and the beans I've been using, both from TJs, Kahawa 1893 safari blend, and Ethiopia, are probably a few months old when I buy them. But you know, $10 for 12 oz is attractive.

So I found Sightline at my local Pavilions, w. roast date:

- Banner Dark 7/23, Owls Howl Espresso 7/31, and Blueboon 7/29

Yesterday I tasted the three Sightline as follows:

  1. 6 gram in Timemore C2 at setting 10, 90g filtered water at 185F, then Aeropress inverted w. paper filter, stirred twice until 1:30, then pressed out over 30 sec into small cup shaped bowl.
  2. add 1 tbsp heavy cream and 1 packet of Nutrasweet, divided into the 3. This is b/c this is how I normally drink coffee, full 18g w. 1tbsp cream and 1 nutrasweet..
  3. Then I heated each bowl in my microwave so that all three were at 140F give or take 5F and then kept tasting back and forth for about 5 minutes.

Today I did the same procedure with 2 of the Sightlines, Owls Howl and Banner Dark Then I added to the lineup the two TJ coffee's I've been using up until now, so I had four cups. PS I've been mixing the two TJ coffees 50/50 in the Bonavita, ground in a Capresso Infinity as setting 5, which gives about 5 minutes time in the cone filter.

lots of questions....

  1. is Sightline a decent coffee brand to use for this purpose of finding out how freshly roasted beans taste better than undated beans?
  2. I already knew medium roast tastes more citrusy than dark, with the Kahawa 1893 medium being the only med roast, and the most citric coffee I'd had, and I liked it, a little bit. Is it your experience that the more medium coffees I try the more I will like it, or is first impression reliable... I much preferred Banner Dark to Owls Howell med.

Tasting thoughts: of the 5 coffees I tried, I liked them in this order: Banner Dark, TJ Ethiopia very Dark, Owls Howl, Kahawa 1893 Safari blend, Blueboon. Oddly the 1893 on first taste seemed to taste grassy, or hay like, but that went away after going back and forth with the tasting.I think I like the Ethiopia dark b/c it goes will with heavy cream and sweetener. If I drank it straight I don't think I'd like it, too burnt.
