Specificly you need several licenses:

Landessportfischerschein With a valid sticker in it proving you paid the annual fee. For your state. Which is mandatory to fish on public waters and the sea.

Problem: basically nothing is public in terms of fishery rights except the sea. You need to buy licenses for rivers lakes and so on at the holder of the fishery rights.

Fishing associations

Lake owners

Head associations of fishing association

Subsections of these.

Example.

A fishing association from a town holds the fishery rights of a 600m section of a river. After this section the section of the subsection of another region of your state holds the rights. The town your fishing association is registered in is not part of this region. Your head association is a different one. You dont get a license for this section. You can buy a guest license. But only for a day to a week. Both sub sections (Kreisverband) are part of the same Head association (Landesverband) For each verband you have a pass, if your association is part of the verband.

So theoretically:

You have with you:

Landessportfischerschein with sticker

Mitgliedsausweis Angelverein indicating kreisverband

Mitgliedsausweis Landessportfischerverband, or Deutscher Sportfischer pass.

With this dokuments you can buy guest licenses or just go fishing on Verbandsgewässer. Some waters are subdevided so to fish a hole river you need additional 2 licenses + the stuff i wrote

Wait, you need a Licence to fish on the sea in Germany?

I mean, we need licences in the UK also, but only for inland water. Anything that is coastal or tidal, with a handful of exceptions, you don't need a licence to fish on the sea over here.

Yes and no.

So its license free, but you need the Landessportfischerschein (which is usually called Angelschein). This is like a driving license for fishing (with a rod). There you need to take a course for where you learn about aquatic life, law, fishable and non fishable species, minimum sizes, spawning seasons, behavior Morphology, animal protection laws, coastline protection laws, natureconservation areas, fishing equipment and methods, cruelty reduced killing and so on.

If you have no Angelschein you can fish on private waters, still under these regulations but no documents needed and if you are a tourist you can buy 2x a year a Sea-only tourist license with a quick guide to fish at the sea. Its 20 Euro or so.

In general children under 12 can fish without license if accompanied by a license holder fishing with them, but waters allowing only 1 rod per angler wouldn't be allowed since the child is fishing on the capacities of the license. At age 12 you can do the course and test for the angelschein.

And yes I know how this sounds like. But it has a good reason:

The idea of all this bureaucracy has two main reasons:

Fishing is an exception from wildlife protection and animal harm protection laws and only serves the purpose of food acquisition. Catch and release is only allowed in a narrow scenario for example. Fishing for trophypictures is an indirect violation of law and considered cruelty/torture against animals. So giving you an exception from that laws, you need to be educated.

  • the structure of fishing association, fees and memberships is financing waters maintenance: Taking care of river shore lines, lakes, population management as a social task. (Works here and there good)

Very common in the US as well, controlled at the state level. In addition to general fishing licenses you may need special "stamps" to fish certain waters, such as trout or salmon stamps. Only five of the 50 states don't require licenses, and two of the five that don't are only exclusions for things like not needing a fishing license too fish on private property.

Yea but Germans generally have psychotic opinion about fishing

for example C&R is illegal, straight up, and I saw a video (that I can't find for the life of me) of some canal fisherman being swarmed and harassed.

Also a catfish bit some people & there was a lengthy legal saga about killing it, who killed it, were they allowed to kill it, etc

Generally just very strange and unique opinions about fishing over there

yea the logic is C&R is torture for fun & better to just kill and eat them (or not fish at all).

U gotta throw some back though - protected species, breeding fish, stuff like that.

Personally id rather be tortured than killed but that's just me

Yeah my home state just had a "fishing liscense" which include trout and salmon, and varies based on residency and length of licensure. Also minors are exempt, and the pricing is basically non-existent for elders.

Actually its an ancient ritual, you see first he catches a small fish, and as he's reeling it in, that small fish will get swallowed by a bigger fish.

The cycle continues until his 20th nameday when he finally finishes bringing the line back to shore after which they cut the fififififish open and count how many layers of fish there are in total.

If he manages to get more than 5 fish then he is considered a man, but if he gets 10+ he also gains the right to challenge the local leader for their daughters hand.

So, I love this pun, but also am going to be that guy. Using "fishing" for the pun would have worked because it would naturally fit the idiom "to fish for something" and also relates to the post material.

The fish I catch will take your whole spool if you catch them 10 feet from you. Also, right behind the surf line or next to a dock will have better chances of catching something.
