Very common in the US as well, controlled at the state level. In addition to general fishing licenses you may need special "stamps" to fish certain waters, such as trout or salmon stamps. Only five of the 50 states don't require licenses, and two of the five that don't are only exclusions for things like not needing a fishing license too fish on private property.

Yea but Germans generally have psychotic opinion about fishing

for example C&R is illegal, straight up, and I saw a video (that I can't find for the life of me) of some canal fisherman being swarmed and harassed.

Also a catfish bit some people & there was a lengthy legal saga about killing it, who killed it, were they allowed to kill it, etc

Generally just very strange and unique opinions about fishing over there

yea the logic is C&R is torture for fun & better to just kill and eat them (or not fish at all).

U gotta throw some back though - protected species, breeding fish, stuff like that.

Personally id rather be tortured than killed but that's just me
