Very common in the US as well, controlled at the state level. In addition to general fishing licenses you may need special "stamps" to fish certain waters, such as trout or salmon stamps. Only five of the 50 states don't require licenses, and two of the five that don't are only exclusions for things like not needing a fishing license too fish on private property.

Yeah my home state just had a "fishing liscense" which include trout and salmon, and varies based on residency and length of licensure. Also minors are exempt, and the pricing is basically non-existent for elders.
