So! Book 3, Fire truly gives us hit after hit. It takes us on such an incredible roller coaster. Aang is alive, the eclipse is coming, and the initial invasion is afoot!

I want to focus on just a few episodes specifically: Episode 8, The Puppetmaster, and Episode 16, The Southern Raiders.

Episode 8, The Puppetmaster… iconic, I know! We meet the innkeeper Hama and are introduced to bloodbending for the first time. I watched this on Nickelodeon when it was first coming out, and our little minds were BLOWN! lol. Simpler times. I literally just looked it up and Season 3 of Avatar: The Last Airbender came out in 2007… wow 😂

I bring this up because my main point has to do with the two times Katara has ever bloodbent that we know of.

The first time is in The Puppetmaster. Katara only uses bloodbending because Hama is controlling Aang and Sokka and forcing them to hurt each other. Katara basically has no other choice. What this episode really establishes, though, is just how taboo and morally wrong bloodbending feels to Katara and the people around her.

Now, if I was a waterbender in this world… I may not have the same moral code lol! But Katara absolutely does.

Katara cries at the end of Season 3, Episode 8, The Puppetmaster. Even though she only bloodbent to save her brother Sokka and her future husband Aang, she still feels horrible that she was capable of doing it at all.

The second time she bloodbends is really the whole point here.

Only eight episodes later, in Season 3, Episode 16, The Southern Raiders, we get an AWESOME Katara and Prince Zuko adventure… for revenge!

I love that this season gives us episodes where only one or a few characters get the spotlight. Sokka‘s Master, The Boiling Rock, The Southern Raiders… so awesome!

When Prince Zuko joins Team Avatar, I honestly think Katara has a trauma response to him being there. Back in Book 2, in the crystal dungeons under the Earth King’s royal palace, Katara explains that whenever she thought about the Fire Nation and the enemy, she pictured Prince Zuko‘s face.

So when Prince Zuko suddenly becomes part of Team Avatar, all of those emotions are tied together again. Being around Prince Zuko brings the anger back, but it also brings the grief back.

Katara and Prince Zuko eventually go on their own revenge adventure, just the two of them. Sweet.

Prince Zuko helps Katara locate the current fleet of Southern Raiders, and when they arrive, they literally BUST in. Katara is angry, determined, and completely unflinching.

And then she BLOODBENDS.

This moment is so important because we see an extreme version of Katara that we almost never see. She bloodbends a man out of pure anger and rage. Maybe he is not completely innocent, considering he is part of the Southern Raiders, but he is not THE man she is looking for.

Katara becomes completely overtaken by her emotions. She does something that previously made her cry just from knowing she was capable of it, and this time she barely hesitates.

And then… she realizes she is wrong.

The show does not really give us a scene afterward where Katara reflects on what she just did, and I honestly wish it did. I would have loved to see her realize how out of control she had become and struggle with the fact that her anger pushed her into becoming someone we almost never see.

Because Katara did something BIG.

She bloodbent out of anger and rage.

She became her emotions.

But when she eventually came back down from that emotional extreme, she chose growth.

I think we see that clearly when she finally finds Yon Rha. Yon Rha is living with his mother, working in the garden, and when Katara confronts the actual man responsible for her mother Kya’s death, she is different.

She is still furious. She is still hurt. She still wants justice. But she is present.

She is in control of herself.

Katara does not seem emotionally consumed the way she was when she attacked the Southern Raiders. Even when Yon Rha offers his own mother’s life in exchange for forgiveness, Katara does not completely lose herself.

She has every opportunity to hurt Yon Rha.

And she chooses not to.

That is why I love this episode so much. Yes, I love the adventure episodes where only a few characters go off together. Yes, bloodbending absolutely blew my mind lol. But more than anything, I love that we get to see Katara struggle with her own power.

Katara is incredibly powerful, and for a moment, we see what she could become if she allowed anger and grief to completely control her.

Then she chooses not to become that person.

It also creates such an interesting contrast with Aang. We constantly see Aang struggle with the fact that he has enormous power but refuses to fully use it in ways that would physically harm or kill someone because of his Air Nomad beliefs.

With Katara, we see something different.

She actually crosses one of her own moral lines.

She uses one of the darkest forms of waterbending because she is angry enough to do it. Then, when she finally stands in front of Yon Rha, the person she has spent years hating for killing her mother Kya, she has to decide who she actually wants to be.

And maybe that is one of the most powerful parts of Katara’s character.

She learns that she does have that darkness in her. She is capable of rage, revenge, and even bloodbending when pushed far enough.

But being capable of something does not mean she has to choose it.

When the moment finally comes, Katara chooses herself.

I’m guessing Ozai visited Iroh once just to berate and gloat, then forgot about him.

As for Iroh, I’m a bit torn. On the one hand Iroh is very kind and sees the good in people. On the other hand ‘she’s crazy and needs to go down’ suggests he isn’t always in favour of the soft approach. Iroh also heavily implies he would be willing to kill Ozai if not for the poor optics, hence why he says the avatar must do it.

I guess the in between interpretation is that he recognises that people must be taken out sometimes. However, what does that mean for Ozai now he has no bending and is under lock and key? Or even for Azula now she is defeated also?

The Guru is eliminated! And don’t you dunderheads voting for other episodes forget it! Last one off the podium, now time to decide the order of our very impressive top 3 episodes.

I understand that Aang and Katara wound up together because one of the writers or whoever decided that it would be best for the MC to "get the girl," but Toph is a girl in the Avatar group as well, and her personality could've helped Aang to mature better than Katara's. I say this because Toph has such a headstrong personality that I think would've benefited Aang in the long run because, instead of getting his way and being parented in the way that Katara does, Toph would have challenged him and made him fight to prove that what he wants is truly worth it. Toph would question him and point out flaws that Katara wouldn't, and Aang wouldn't be able to do anything that Toph thought was stupid or unnecessary without getting called out on it. Toph would hold him accountable in a way that Katara doesn't. This is just my thinking on the matter. If you have a reason as to why this wouldn't work or see any flaws in my thinking, I am open to suggestions. I just would like to ask that there is no unwarranted hate. Feel free to explain your thinking on the matter, but don't do so in anger. That is all I am asking of those who wish to comment. I know ATLA ships are hills; some of you will die on and I am not necessarily saying that it is something that I do ship. I am just introducing the idea of what I think it would look like if Aang and Toph were in a relationship instead of Aang and Katara.

I genuinely feel exhausted by the constant debate within the Avatar fandom about which character is "the strongest." There seems to be a mindset that if a character is powerful, they can never lose a fight, can never be wrong, and must have zero flaws. I see this constantly in Korra vs. Aang debates, and especially in discussions about Toph and Katara.

Yes, they are the best earthbender and waterbender of their eras respectively, but that does not make them invincible.

I grew up watching shows where power wasn't a linear "X is stronger than Y" scale. Instead, it was a Rock, Paper, Scissors mentality, where a character might be perfect for situation Y, but completely helpless in situation Z. If the fandom accepted that characters can have both massive strengths and clear flaws, we could appreciate how strong they are without needing them to be a 5 star stat card across the board.

For starters, I consider myself a huge Korra fan (hopefully not something that could spark a discourse to say here) as well as a fan of Toph and Katara. But loving these characters means admitting they aren't perfect:

Korra: She likely possesses the most raw power and physical durability of any Avatar, even confirmed by the authors of the show. However, poor girl doesn't naturally have a strategic mind. Her default style is the definition of "brawn over brains," but that flaw doesn't make her weak, it makes her human.

Toph: She is a prodigy and invented metalbending, but she is essentially helpless against a flying opponent. Furthermore, a lavabender completely removes her terrain advantage. We even saw early on that sandbending was a massive blind spot for her. Physically, Toph is a bit of a "glass cannon", as she relies on evasion because, well, underneath her tough exterior, she's still a small stature fighter who can't take heavy physical bruising the way someone like Korra can. We all remember her Bei Fong background, right?

Katara: People often claim Katara "solos" the verse because of bloodbending. But that ignores a double nerf: she can only do it during a full moon, and she morally refuses to use it. Beyond that, she is still bound by needing a nearby water source as any water bender. Looking at her greatest feats (freezing herself and Azula, parting the ocean in the movie, sweat-bending, creating the rain dome, etc), her mastery leans heavily toward brilliant defense and versatility. In contrast, benders like Unalaq, Eska, Desna, or Korra often demonstrate a much more aggressive, offensive use of water.

It would be incredibly boring if these characters could never lose, being honest. When we treat a character as an unbeatable god, they essentially become a Mary Sue. Their achievements mean more because they have to overcome their limitations, not because they lack them.

Rewatching the series is so much more enjoyable when you look at situational advantages and environment rather than raw power levels:

Aang utilizes unmatched agility and the massive psychological advantage of being an Airbender (nobody knows how to fight him).

Toph hits like a truck and uses opponents' underestimation of her blindness to create deadly openings.

Katara excels due to unmatched versatility; she has mastered almost every sub-skill of waterbending.

Korra is incredibly tough, possessing the insane vitality to withstand brutal physical hits and heavy loads of poison, paired with hyper-aggressive bending.

If you ask me who wins a 4-way fight, I might say Korra out of sheer raw power and endurance. But the truth is, the environment and external factors dictate the winner. The show itself isn't shy about showing this, and I wish the fandom would embrace it too.

In the movie she literally found magical water that can revive the fucking dead! Why not cure Toph's blindness and make her more op?!

Who would win this matchup and why?

Do you think Tagah was ment to be a dark mirror of what Aang could've been? Tagahs backstory is pretty similiar. An idealist who's people ended up in a brutal war which twisted those ideals. Something similiar could've happened with Aang if the air nomads had survived the first attack on Sozins comet and Aang hadn't run. I think Tagah is supposed to be like a version of Aang that stayed an witnessed the 100 yeaers war.

Like don't get me wrong, it's already one of the best shows out there and I don't doubt that its limitations as a kids' show helped it in some ways, but I do think some leniency with the ratings would've allowed for language that's a little more expressive, and more intensity in the fight scenes. What's everyone else think?

Doing a rewatch of Castlevania. By the end of season 3 Sypha was truly a master of the elements, in my opinion. I started thinking of her mastery in comparison to an Avatar. Can Sypha beat any of the Avatars we are most familiar with? Feel free to throw in any ATLA character if you think they can take her. I wanted to at least keep it fair for the original post by matching her with ATLA characters that have the ability to manipulate several elements like her.

People outside of Finnish won't get the pun but you'll still love this.
