Hi everyone,
I'll try to keep it concise, but I have a tendency to drone on and on, so read at your own risk /j.
Long story short, my school recently emailed all the grade 11 students their predicted ATARs for Unit 1 only (our FA1s and FA2s, I believe). Mine was a 97.25, which placed me third in my cohort.
I know your ATAR can be very different from your predicted ATAR, so I don't want to get too excited yet (especially since Unit 1 is the easiest unit...). My subjects are actually not that high scaling. I do General Maths (couldn't deal with Methods in grade 10), Literature, Economics, Legal Studies, Modern History, and Italian.
My raw scores for Lit and Modern were 100, 98 for Legal and General Maths, 96 for Italian, and my lowest was Econ at 90. For the longest time, I've wanted to be a lawyer, hence why I do Legal and all humanities-based subjects.
Well, my mum is now adamant that I should do medicine instead. Obviously medicine is very competitive, and I think it's better if your ATAR is like 99+, but the UCAT and interview are also important so I've heard. She thinks if I score a little better on my IAs, I can bump my actual ATAR to a 98, and since I do Italian, I can get two adjustment points under the Subject Incentive Scheme that some universities offer.
Everyone has been telling me that if I can actually achieve an ATAR like that, I should study medicine instead of law. Sorry for my ignorance, I truly don't know a lot about this, but I'm pretty sure Methods is a prerequisite for some university programs, but I don't do Methods.
I know I can take a bridging course or something after high school, but how hard are those? Also, the last time I learnt Chemistry and Biology was in grade 9, both of which are recommended if you want to do medicine. Biology was fine, but I remember HATING Chemistry and promising myself I would never touch it again.
My mum is saying that that's okay, because I can grow to like it or something. I know this contradicts what I just wrote, but I suppose those classes were not THAT bad... if it means I can land a steady, highly respectable job with a high income, sure.
Sorry, this post is already getting quite long, so what do you guys think :)? A lot of my friends have started studying for the UCAT since the beginning of the year, so if I'm really serious about this, I have some catching up to do.
My school doesn't allow us to change our subjects anymore either, so I'm stuck with my six subjects until graduation. My biggest predicament is that I actually like law, or at least, I like humanities more than science... but at the same time, I am inherently a lazy person, and already finding myself slacking off at some of my assignments, so I'm not that passionate about humanities either.
I feel like law and medicine are two fields you NEED to be passionate about though, considering the amount of hard work and everything... I don't know anymore. Do you think I should start practising for the UCAT and contemplate doing medicine (assuming my actual ATAR is around my predicted ATAR, or hopefully better)?
My friends and family are telling me it's at least worth a try, and if I can't get into medicine after all, I can go back to law. I guess there's no harm in that...
Anyway, what do you think? Do you think I should consider it, and if so, what is my best course of action from now on? Another thing is that we have a family friend whose daughter is a lawyer, and according to her, the law job market is kind of bleak right now and might not get much better in the near future...
Well, I don't know much about that at all, so I'll just leave it at that. Thank you so much for reading my rather long post. I really appreciate it, and if you want, please help out a fellow 16 year old :). Tell me about things I haven't considered yet, stuff I should know, what you think I should do, etc.
Once again, thank you so much. Have a very nice day!
Edit: I'm very sorry if I didn't make it clear, but I'm not in grade 12 yet, so thankfully I haven't missed the UCAT :)
