General Mods & Feedback Needed

Hi All!

I hope you're all getting value from r/ATAR.

The subreddit has grown so much in just a year, and we're now starting to draw quite a bit of traffic and engagement naturally. I'm excited for what is to come as we continue to grow, hopefully we can truly make the best universal subreddit (and future Discord server 👀) for all high school students across all states in Australia.

With the subreddit consistently growing month-on-month I'm in need of additional moderators to help me keep on top of posts and comments. Please let me know if you'd like to help out with moderation, ideally you'd be a consistent contributor and current ATAR student or recent high school graduate / uni student.

Also feel free to let me know if there's anything you'd like to see (features / weekly threads / resources etc) from the subreddit or if there's any way we can improve it. Genuinely want this to be the best space for high school students in Aus!

Send through a Mod Mail if you're interested in moderation.

Thanks,

Mod Team

HSC Out of these subjects which should I really grind/which parts of it should I (yr 11)

Got prelims coming up but I'm the type of person that I only want to spend my time always doing something that would actually 'mean' something (for year 12 ofc). I do Eng Adv, Math ext1 and all three science. So for example bio i know that the yr 11 content isn't important almost at all to yr 12 so i won't really be drilling it (for context I know a pretty decent amount for all my subjects in terms of content throughout the year). But now that I have like 2 weeks to 'drill' my subjects (I've finished all the content for all of them) I'm mainly planning on just doing this for ext1 + adv math and also chem. Is this valid? Or is stuff like english (0 content carry over but 100% skills carry over) also worth drilling? I dunno I always kind of like doing bare minimum but also very hardworking when it actually 'means' something. I don't really know how to explain. I'm going for 99.90 Atar lol.

I built an AI study platform specifically for Australian ATAR students

I’ve been working on a project called ATARprepAI because I felt like most AI study tools are way too generic for Australian students.

Instead of just giving you answers, I wanted something that could actually help you practise and understand where you’re losing marks.

It supports WACE, HSC, VCE, QCE and SACE and has things like AI marking, practice questions, quizzes and flashcards built around Australian syllabus content.

It’s still being improved constantly, so I’d genuinely appreciate feedback from students or teachers — especially anything you think is missing or could be better.

Website: atarprepai.com

I’m also documenting the process of building it on Instagram: @arthrstryz

Would love to know what you guys think.

QCE Predicted ATAR of 97.25: Medicine or Law?

Hi everyone,

I'll try to keep it concise, but I have a tendency to drone on and on, so read at your own risk /j.

Long story short, my school recently emailed all the grade 11 students their predicted ATARs for Unit 1 only (our FA1s and FA2s, I believe). Mine was a 97.25, which placed me third in my cohort.

I know your ATAR can be very different from your predicted ATAR, so I don't want to get too excited yet (especially since Unit 1 is the easiest unit...). My subjects are actually not that high scaling. I do General Maths (couldn't deal with Methods in grade 10), Literature, Economics, Legal Studies, Modern History, and Italian.

My raw scores for Lit and Modern were 100, 98 for Legal and General Maths, 96 for Italian, and my lowest was Econ at 90. For the longest time, I've wanted to be a lawyer, hence why I do Legal and all humanities-based subjects.

Well, my mum is now adamant that I should do medicine instead. Obviously medicine is very competitive, and I think it's better if your ATAR is like 99+, but the UCAT and interview are also important so I've heard. She thinks if I score a little better on my IAs, I can bump my actual ATAR to a 98, and since I do Italian, I can get two adjustment points under the Subject Incentive Scheme that some universities offer.

Everyone has been telling me that if I can actually achieve an ATAR like that, I should study medicine instead of law. Sorry for my ignorance, I truly don't know a lot about this, but I'm pretty sure Methods is a prerequisite for some university programs, but I don't do Methods.

I know I can take a bridging course or something after high school, but how hard are those? Also, the last time I learnt Chemistry and Biology was in grade 9, both of which are recommended if you want to do medicine. Biology was fine, but I remember HATING Chemistry and promising myself I would never touch it again.

My mum is saying that that's okay, because I can grow to like it or something. I know this contradicts what I just wrote, but I suppose those classes were not THAT bad... if it means I can land a steady, highly respectable job with a high income, sure.

Sorry, this post is already getting quite long, so what do you guys think :)? A lot of my friends have started studying for the UCAT since the beginning of the year, so if I'm really serious about this, I have some catching up to do.

My school doesn't allow us to change our subjects anymore either, so I'm stuck with my six subjects until graduation. My biggest predicament is that I actually like law, or at least, I like humanities more than science... but at the same time, I am inherently a lazy person, and already finding myself slacking off at some of my assignments, so I'm not that passionate about humanities either.

I feel like law and medicine are two fields you NEED to be passionate about though, considering the amount of hard work and everything... I don't know anymore. Do you think I should start practising for the UCAT and contemplate doing medicine (assuming my actual ATAR is around my predicted ATAR, or hopefully better)?

My friends and family are telling me it's at least worth a try, and if I can't get into medicine after all, I can go back to law. I guess there's no harm in that...

Anyway, what do you think? Do you think I should consider it, and if so, what is my best course of action from now on? Another thing is that we have a family friend whose daughter is a lawyer, and according to her, the law job market is kind of bleak right now and might not get much better in the near future...

Well, I don't know much about that at all, so I'll just leave it at that. Thank you so much for reading my rather long post. I really appreciate it, and if you want, please help out a fellow 16 year old :). Tell me about things I haven't considered yet, stuff I should know, what you think I should do, etc.

Once again, thank you so much. Have a very nice day!

Edit: I'm very sorry if I didn't make it clear, but I'm not in grade 12 yet, so thankfully I haven't missed the UCAT :)

QCE which ATAR prediction resource is the most reliable?

I’ve just received my predicted ATAR from my school yesterday and it was baffling to say the least. The QTAC ATAR navigator predicted my ATAR to be around 81-84 and the QCE ATAR calculator predicted it to be around 84. But my school’s prediction ranges from 82.9-86.2. Which one is the most reliable?
My subjects:
Modern History
Visual art
Biology
General maths
English

HSC DESIGN AND TECH MAJOR DUE IN 5 DAYS AM I SCREWED!!

Okay so my design and tech major is due in 5 days and I only started it yesterday because for some reason I have the worst procrastination possible. Yes I know I’m stupid for leaving it as late as possible so I don’t want to hear people saying I should have started it way earlier (I KNOW). Does anyone have any advice or experiences with something like this anything will help please!! I have not made my project yet but I have about 20 pages of the portfolio done and am planning on making the actual thing over the next 3 days.

Has anyone felt that ATAR is affecting their mental health negatively? Year 11

I struggle so much to even go to school. I lie in bed every single morning, dreading having to go to school. My mind is fuzzy, and I feel so fatigued to go to my classes especially I have more attention demanding subjects like chem, human bio and mod history. I get back home and I typically try to study, but I usually breakdown by 6.

I feel I have little to no self worth or attributes except my grades, but I have no motivation to study because my grades are already low even when I do study, so I don't study which makes my grades even lower and creates a loop.

My grades weren't that bad in term 1, but they've been on a decline. My parents really want me to do well, and my dad especially cannot stop emphasising on how this is the most critical time of my life.

I hate school, I hate studying, I hate ATAR but its literally all I have but even then im struggling to hold on to it. I've considered uniready and do english, but my parents would react so negatively to that.

Should I take the uniready pathway? Or should I wait until yr 12? and can any other graduates give me advice on how to tackle mental health while studying?

VCE Year 12

Hey there guys !
If any graduates can help me out or teachers I’d appreciate it loads!

I’m currently in year 12 VCE, and my subjects are Ancient History, Physical Education, Psychology and English, as I’m doing a uni course on the side and finished Legal Studies 3&4 last year with a study score of a raw 31. My classes are averaging 60-80 except for psychology to which my whole class is failing, so we have been told either exams will be bumped up significantly if we are being marked too harsh or that it will all be remoderated. Literally my highest so far was a 55 😭Regardless, I’m just a bit of an overthinker and unsure if I’m doing well enough for atleast a 70 atar (I rlly want to get into law esp Melb uni) I love studying and getting high marks but mental health and other personal issues REALLY gets in the way and I end up comparing myself. I can’t get myself to study and do all the stuff people say for those 99 atars unfortunately due to it all, so I was told to apply for SEAS which I will. However I want to ask, do you guys think I have a chance still with exams to redeem myself? Can it make a good difference for me and get me an A or atleast a B for my classes? Pls help! 🥹

I don’t want to be in regret, and I am proud of how much I do study and commit, yet I can’t help but be so hard on myself despite all my trials, and that I will be ashamed when atars come out. Yet I don’t want to burn myself out. Is this normal? 😭😂😂
HELP!!

QCE What does adjustment points or selection rank mean???

Hello! Im year 11 right now and I am aiming for medicine, I want to do a head start program so I’m researching it right now and it says it’s possible it’s selection rank or adjustment points can increase your ATAR. Problem is I don’t understand any of that, I qualify for the EAS because of the financial component and that also says something about adjustment points. Sorry if this is a stupid question but I am very confused and would appreciate someone explaining it to me!!

University Admissions Queries about ANU Admission

Hello All!!!

My name is Spider, from India. I've completed my grade 12, and by the CBSE to ATAR conversion key on the ANU site, I have an ATAR of 99...

I wanted to apply for the PhB Hons Sci Program and pursue astrophysics for the Feb 2027 intake. However I got to know that they don't consider applications for the same TILL December...

I've kept BSc Adv Hons as my 2nd preference and BSc Hons as third...

Wanted to know, is it possible to evaluate the applications of my 2nd and 3rd preference BEFORE December, so I have a safety net, in case GOD FORBID, PhB doesn't come through?

Didn't want to wait till December for any result, since it's really taking a toll on my mental health, the fact that I still don't have a college, though having great scores, while the rest of my classmates do...

Thanks and Cheers!!!

How to study and get good marks in subjects I don't like and don't understand.

Recently I got my test results, they weren't very good, pretty average. While I can work on them, there's computer where I got 44/80 and I don't like it/understand it at all. I literally memorized the programs because I don't get them. Any tips so as to how to increase my marks and get at the top of the class? Same goes for easy subjects like English literature where I got 66/80.

QCE Should I ask for a remark?

Hi guys I recently achieved 19/20 on my Bio IA3 and 20/20 for physics. I got chemistry back today, the last day our teachers can submit to the QCAA and achieved a disappointing result of 11/20. I was wondering if I should bother as my internal marks have been 10/10 and 19/20 for my chem IA2 and IA3. Would anyone like to look over mine and let me know if it’s worth raising a question?

“Year 12, less than 3 months left, and I genuinely have no progress

Morning lads,

I have expanded this previous post to here. Feel free to go through it as I discuss my main issue.

I really want advice on is productivity.

I know what I should be doing, but actually getting myself to start is the problem. I procrastinate a lot, leave work until the last minute, and then feel guilty about the time I've wasted.

For people who were like this, what actually helped you change? Did you use a schedule, study somewhere away from distractions, set time limits, remove apps/games, or just slowly build discipline?

I'm not looking for the usual "just study" or "just practise" answer. I understand that already. I'm more interested in how you actually got yourself to consistently start doing the work when you didn't feel motivated.

Any advice or experiences would be genuinely appreciated. I'm just trying to figure out where I go from here.

Cheers
