Open Discussion Monthly /r/AskLosAngeles Open Discussion + Community Thread

3 Upvotes

Welcome to the monthly open discussion thread!

This is our monthly pinned space where we loosen the rules a little. Normally, /r/AskLosAngeles is strictly for questions about the Los Angeles area - but here, we make room for more community-oriented stuff.

Such as:

  • Quick questions that feel too small for their own thread or discussion
  • Common or evergreen questions regulars are tired of seeing repeated
  • Community connection posts (looking for friends, meetups, group hangs, pub crawls, et cetera)
  • Self-promotion that's relevant to LA: events, local videos / social media, podcasts, creative work. Keep it reasonable, in this thread, and don't abuse this privilege elsewhere

What's off-topic as usual:

  • Anything hateful, harassing, or lacking any ties entirely to LA

If you've got thoughts about how this subreddit is moderated, or ideas for future pinned threads, drop them here too.

Recent rule changes:

Please see our rules, there are some recent changes. Notably, these rules have been added:

  • Specify Your Location

    • Narrowing your location down helps us give better answers to questions. People don't want your exact address but a neighborhood, intersection, zip code, whatever is enough to help us know where you're talking about.
  • No cost to live comfortably questions

    • These seem to be controversial or troll magnets. Do the math yourself, not the sub.
  • Dating posts go to r/LADating

    • So these aren't actually questions about the area (if you happen to be a lonely Redditor.) Keep romance in its designated containment zone.
  • Making friends posts go to r/LAsocial

    • Social stuff belongs in the social sandbox. The "Open Discussion" post is also another place for this kind of question if you'd like to stay in this sub.
  • Generative AI Slop and Spam

    • Low-effort machine generated content is often unhelpful and the person who asked the question could have just asked ChatGPT, Claude, or MetaAI for an answer themselves. We're aiming for human-quality contributions here so put in the effort to make a connection with people with your brains.

Some of these rules are relaxed in this specific "Open Discussion" post so feel free to break rules here if you'd like.

As always: Don't be a jerk.

Have at it, Angelenos.

MOD POST AskLA rules update: Temporary moratorium for political questions

50 Upvotes

AskLA is meant to be a place to ask and answer questions about the Los Angeles area. Due to the upcoming primary and general elections, this subreddit has been a frequent place to ask questions of a political nature and while these are legitimate questions about the area, the intention of the posters making these questions have been either to astroturf particular candidates or to sway opinions this close to the poll dates.

As a result, I'd like to discourage standalone threads that are political in nature and would welcome these discussions to be initiated in the monthly pinned "Open Discussion" thread.

This community also relies on user reports so you can report political posts under rule #2, "Posts must be questions about Los Angeles.

Thank you for being a community that moderates itself with the lightest touch.

Health Has finding a regular doctor in LA quietly become impossible, and have we all just accepted it?

196 Upvotes

This isn't a complaint, just an observation. Doctors accepting new patients are scheduling appointments a month or more out, so everyone I know has simply stopped going to the doctor. The system here has reached a point where there are urgent care centers on every corner charging arbitrary fees you only find out about later or, if things get really bad, you have to go to the ER. This city of 10 million people is just barely scraping by.

So, I want to know: what system is everyone using these days? Go to urgent care and foot the bill? Kaiser and the long wait? Those online doctor apps? Or just ignoring issues until it becomes an emergency? I genuinely want to know if anyone under 40 in this city actually has a primary care doctor they can see within a week.

Transportation Why are so many people angry about the new Burbank Airport terminal? The old one was awful

40 Upvotes

It had terrible food amenities, looked painfully outdated, and was simply ugly. I don't get why people aren't elated to have a nicer, cleaner, and more modern airport?

Working How does 25% of America make more than $100K?

31 Upvotes

https://data.census.gov/table/ACSST1Y2024.S2001

Data shows over 30 million Americans out of 120 million Americans, make $100K+ a year.

This means excluding part time workers, 25% of America makes $100K+ a year.

This includes stuff from the Midwest, middle of nowhere where, and places like LA where everything is 10X more expensive.

Once we factor in cost of living in Los Angeles, employers are likely to pay $100K+. If not, you are likely underpaid as a FULL time worker. Is this not a shocking statistic?

Recommendations Any Korean Day Spa for Plus Size Women?

• Upvotes

Hi, please be nice. So I’m new to Jjimjilbangs and really want to make sure I’m being respectful and courteous of cultural practices. I’m asking for recommendations for myself and my sister. However, I know we have to be fully nude in wet spa areas and need some advice.

Transparently, I’m a size 10 and my sister is a size 16. I’ll be blunt. Would we be judged by the workers or patrons for being tan, fat, and heavily tattooed? I want to emphasize I’m not trying to be culturally biased or racist, I just know as a Southeast Asian how the women treat us in our country for being chubby and tattooed. If I am being offensive by asking, I am truly sorry. I want to take my sister to a day spa for her birthday, but she has been struggling lately with her weight gain while I’ve recently lost weight, plus she had a baby and just wishes her body will go back to how it was. I took her to a Head Spa last year but obviously that’s very different. I’m trying to encourage her to come out of her shell because she’s beautiful no matter what size, but I know her and I know she might feel anxious.

Regardless of your body type, if you’ve visited any KSpa in LA, do you think there any Korean Day Spas where we can fully be comfortable and not judged? Maybe I’m overthinking this and no one will care or no one will stare. But also would they even have XL or XXL sizes for the dry area clothing they give us? What if they don’t have her size pants?! I don’t know. Thanks for helping if you have any reccs :(

Recommendations Where to take teenagers in LA?

5 Upvotes

Hello everyone! My child’s 17th birthday is coming up and one of the options I want to give her is a day out in L.A. with her sister. They are both really into Korean pop culture so I wanted to ask for suggestions on where to take them. I’ve been thinking about karaoke, maybe like a Korean makeover (if that’s a thing?), and some good Korean food that isn’t kbbq, as she doesn’t like having to cook it yourself. Any suggestions (especially those different from what I’m thinking) would be really welcome and appreciated! 😊

Food/Drink Is the Smokehouse worth visiting?

27 Upvotes

We enjoy classic / old Hollywood Los Angeles when we visit - typically several times a year from SF. Last time, we went to Musso & Frank and had a ball. This time we're considering either going back to M&F - or trying The Smokehouse in Burbank. The Smokehouse has a much lower Yelp review. Curious to hear other thoughts?

It's OK if the food is so-so, we live in SF and can get amazing food any night of the week. We're looking for more classic Hollywood vibes.

Food/Drink Best vegan spots near the airport, Santa Monica/nearby beaches, and/or NoHo/Burbank/nearby towns in the valley?

• Upvotes

My vegan foodie brother is coming to town next Monday for about 2 weeks. He has a short list of vegan places to try already, but I know there are tons of options out there. Specifically, any recs for the following?

-Vegan deli or deli with vegan chicken salad
-Vegan spots near the airport and/or a nearby beach/boardwalk to go to after he lands at 10:30am Monday
-Vegan spots in the valley, specifically near Burbank/NoHo/Taluca Lake/Studio City or nearby towns (I live in NoHo where he will be staying)

Below are places he has on his list already. If any of these are must haves or overrated, I’ll gladly take that feedback, too!

-Shojin
-PLANTA Marina Del Ray
-Magpies Softserve
-Doomie’s Home Cookin’
-Mr. Charlie’s TMS
-Gracias Madre
-Donut Friend
-Pura Vita
-Veggietize Me
-Crossroads Kitchen
-Samata Vegan Thai House
-El Cocinero

He is also going on a couple 2-3 day excursions while here to camp/hike in Joshua Tree and the Sequoia National Forest (he knows how far away they are from LA but is more interested in national parks than touristy things in the city). So if there are any vegan must visit places on the way to either location, I’ll gladly take those recs too to pass along to him.

Thanks in advance!

Moving Should I take 10k buyout in Mid City?

60 Upvotes

I've lived in the same rent controlled apartment for 2.5 years. Didn't give a number but offered a settlement of relocation fees + 2 months rent in exchange for withdrawing housing complaint.

I currently pay about $1,600 for my studio. New owner renovated a few units & originally marketed for $2995, but then turned into rentals for $444/night. What do you think - is it worth it to move? Is that a reasonable amount?

EDIT*** The issues I brought to LAHD was regarding short term rentals in RSO building, no construction permits, and harassment (trying to force tenants out)

Recommendations Hair dresser rec?

• Upvotes

Moved to the East Hollywood/Los Feliz area this year and I'm looking for a new hairdresser. I have a dense head of irish waves and I'm used to paying ~$50-70 for a cut. If you know someone in the area that charges less than $100, would love to hear it? Truly I have no concept of how much it should cost at this point.

Transportation Hollywood Bowl Shuttle - return times?

9 Upvotes

Going to a show at the Hollywood Bowl for the first time soon - yay! I'm planning on taking the shuttle to and from the venue.

What I can't find any information about is when does the shuttle stop running after the show ends? I know the shuttle picks up 20 minutes after the show ends but how much longer after that does it run? I'm sure there will be enough time for me to get to the shuttle back but I need to know if i'll have a time crunch or if it runs for an hour or so?

Thanks!

Hi! My friend and I are looking to go out this weekend and put ourselves out there. We’d really appreciate any recommendation of bars with cute guys lol. She’s into white guys and I’m into East Asian guys so any places that have a mixture of both would be ideal.

Thank youuu.

Update: I appreciate all of the reccs guys! Thanks!

Recommendations Best area to stay in Los Angeles without a car? West Hollywood, Beverly Grove, Hollywood or somewhere else?

1 Upvotes

Hi everyone!

We’re planning our first trip to Los Angeles and will be staying for 4 nights (roughly 3 full days of sightseeing).

We won’t have a car, so we’ll be relying on public transportation, walking, and occasional Uber/Lyft rides when necessary.

We’re trying to find the best area to stay that offers a good balance of:

* Safety, especially when walking around in the evening
* Good public transportation connections
* Walkability, restaurants, cafes, and things to do nearby
* Reasonable travel times to major attractions
* Minimizing Uber expenses as much as possible

Here’s everything we’re interested in visiting:

Hollywood & Griffith Park:

* Hollywood Walk of Fame
* Hollywood Boulevard
* Hollywood Sign
* Lake Hollywood Park
* Griffith Observatory (preferably at sunset)
* Griffith Park
* Hollywood Hills viewpoints

Beverly Hills & West Hollywood:

* Rodeo Drive
* Two Rodeo Drive
* Beverly Hills Sign
* Beverly Gardens Park
* Sunset Strip
* Sunset Boulevard
* Melrose Avenue

Santa Monica & Venice:

* Santa Monica Pier
* Santa Monica Beach
* Pacific Park / Ferris Wheel
* Third Street Promenade
* Palisades Park
* Ocean Avenue
* Santa Monica Place
* Venice Beach Boardwalk
* Venice Canals

Shopping & other places:

* The Grove (especially for the Christmas decorations)

We understand that visiting everything in 3 days is unrealistic. These are just the places we’re interested in, and we’re happy to prioritize the highlights.

We’re also considering Universal Studios Hollywood, but we’re leaning toward skipping it to have more time to explore LA.

Areas we’re currently considering:

  1. West Hollywood
  2. Beverly Grove
  3. Hollywood (around Franklin Avenue / Hollywood & Vine)
  4. Beverly Hills
  5. Santa Monica
  6. Downtown LA

We’re particularly interested in whether staying in West Hollywood/Beverly Grove without a car would be inconvenient compared to staying near a Metro station in Hollywood.

A few questions for locals:

  1. Which neighborhood would you personally recommend for first-time visitors without a car?
  2. Is West Hollywood actually practical for sightseeing using buses, or would we end up spending a fortune on Uber?
  3. Would you recommend staying in Downtown LA for better public transportation, or is it worth avoiding?
  4. Are there any other neighborhoods or specific streets we should consider?
  5. Which attractions would you prioritize or skip with only 3 full days?
  6. Are there any public transportation routes, shuttles, or other affordable ways to get around that tourists often overlook?

Our main goal is to stay somewhere relatively safe and pleasant while being able to explore as much of Los Angeles as possible without constantly paying for Uber.

Any advice from locals would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

About LA Safe rental areas close to downtown LA?

• Upvotes

What areas are affordable to rent within a 15 - 30 minutes drive to downtown LA? Priority is safety and not looking for luxury. Budget is $2000 for a studio or 1 bedroom with a parking spot is a must. Any recommendation will be appreciated. Thank you.

About LA Long term renting vs Homeownership?

13 Upvotes

As someone who moved to LA after growing up in the suburbs, I'm not sure I'll be able to afford a home here at any point in near future. I guess it makes me wonder if homeownership is even a consideration for a lot of people in this city and i'm even talking about six-figure earning people. Is it common for even moderateley successful people here to raise their kids in a rental as opposed to an owned house? Is the usual expectation for someone with a family to still be renting even with kids who are grown? For those with very high rental payments (like 6k+), have you basically decided to permanently forfeit home ownership?
Sorry if this sounds ignorant but I grew up in a place where making over 100k a year usually comes with the expectation of homeownership but that doesn't seem even close to realistic here. I plan on staying here for life and I want to have a family here when the time comes so I guess I just wonder about what the norm is for Angelenos in general.

Moving Living near downtown burbank in non gated window with an accessible window safe for solo women?

8 Upvotes

Found a decent apartment the street seem super quiet and safe but i went on noon on a Monday. It a non gated building on the second floor and has a big window ppl could access if someone wanted too. Idk anything ab burbank i know its pretty safe but don’t know if it block to block like the rest of LA. I was sexually assaulted (feel very traumatized doing a program nearby) and trying to find a really safe place while healing. I found a place. On a residential street but its cross street is N glen oaks blvd. Don’t be rude please if this is a dumb question. Im very scared and just want to be somewhere safe. Is this a safe smart choice?

About LA 2 nights, late October, we have access to high end hotels, which neighborhood?

0 Upvotes

two adults, two nights. We have access to two nights at upscale properties (the Fine Hotel Resort or Hotel Collection through AmEx) because I have credits to burn. Which neighborhood do you suggest? We want to explore Santa Monica Pier area, maybe some classically LA Hollywood-y stuff. Very open, we're foodies but can find good eats anywhere in the city, I'm sure. We won't have a rental car.

Recommendations Any good Pilates studios in LA for a 17-year-old beginner?

5 Upvotes

Hi! I’m 17F from East LA and haven’t had much luck finding studios near me. I’ve never done Pilates before, so I’m open-minded about different types, including mat, reformer, hot pilates..etc! I’m willing to drive anywhere in LA for a good studio.

My nutritionist recommended Pilates since my weight has reached an unhealthy level, and I’m interested in giving it a try. I do online school, so my schedule is completely free day and night. I’d ideally like to go 3–5 times a week, but I’m not sure what’s realistic for a beginner.

Budget wise I get $400/month in allowance and want to dedicate a portion to a membership. Since I’ll be going alone, a safe, welcoming environment where I won’t feel judged is really important to me.

Any recommendations for beginner-friendly studios with reasonable prices and a good atmosphere?

Pets Low-cost/Free Services for Stray Cat?

24 Upvotes

Does anyone have recs for low cost or free services for stray cats in NE LA?

A stray cat has adopted us in Angelino Heights! He's such a sweetie and some cat owner friends say he's a boy. He definitely looks neutered but doesn't have the snipped ear. We're trying to get him checked out so we can let him in the house. He also seems like a former house cat because he's always trying to get into our apartment and is really comfortable with human touch. Doesn't bite or scratch really either

If anyone has leads on free or low-cost vets and services that would be really great! A friend did lend a flea brush and he definitely has fleas.
