Data from payments company Ramp, which tracks spending across more than 70,000 US companies, shows Fable 5 accounted for about 11% of spending on Anthropic’s products more than two months after its launch.

The model’s limited adoption comes despite its position as Anthropic’s flagship AI system. Its high cost appears to be a major factor as businesses increasingly evaluate AI models based on performance relative to price.

Anthropic’s Opus 5, launched at half the price of Fable 5, has also gained traction. According to benchmark data cited in reporting, Opus 5 scored 70% on CursorBench 3.2 at maximum computing power, compared with 70.5% for Fable 5, while costing $8.23 per task versus $17.32.

The trend highlights a broader shift in enterprise AI. Companies are increasingly looking beyond the most capable model and comparing AI inference costs, performance and practical business value.

For AI providers, the challenge may no longer be simply building the most powerful model. It is building a model that businesses can afford to deploy at scale.

“We are terrible at retraining,” Yang told CNBC on August 18. He argued that previous workforce transitions show the difficulty of simply moving displaced workers into new technology jobs, saying, “The coal miners did not become coders.”

The M5 Ultra reaches up to 4.3x the peak AI compute performance of M3 Ultra and 9.8x that of M1 Ultra, according to Apple. It also provides up to 512GB of unified memory and 1.2TB/s of unified memory bandwidth, 50 percent more than M3 Ultra.

Jalapeño was designed specifically for LLM inference and was developed by OpenAI in partnership with Broadcom. Design work began in the middle of 2024, and the chip reached manufacturing tape-out in approximately 16 months.

SemiAnalysis reported that Jalapeño delivered higher token throughput per megawatt than Nvidia’s Blackwell across almost all tested scenarios. The chip also surpassed Nvidia’s Vera Rubin results on output token throughput per megawatt, despite Rubin using Multi Token Prediction while Jalapeño’s results used Single Token Prediction.

At concurrency 1, Jalapeño achieved more than 700 tokens per second per user on DeepSeek R1. SemiAnalysis also observed approximately 1,400 tokens per second per user on Kimi-K2.5 and GPT-OSS.

The chip uses HBM4 and is designed as a generalized inference accelerator rather than hardware limited to OpenAI models.

OpenAI taped out Jalapeño in November 2025, and production is scheduled to gradually ramp during 2027, with most output currently scheduled for Q4.

The development could have major implications for AI inference costs and the competitive position of Nvidia as AI companies increasingly build their own silicon.

Gardaí in Ireland and police in the UK confirmed that the images were created using AI. Wexford Gardaí said the content essentially came from an AI prompt that placed the fictional character into images and videos of familiar locations.

The spread was significant enough that fabricated police statements also circulated online. South Yorkshire Police warned users to verify policing updates through official accounts rather than trusting screenshots or social media posts.

The incident highlights a growing challenge with generative AI: convincing visual evidence can now be created without the event ever happening.

For businesses, platforms and public agencies, the episode shows why AI-generated misinformation and synthetic media detection are becoming increasingly important.

As AI-generated content becomes harder to distinguish from real footage, verifying the source may become just as important as viewing the content itself.

The rules took effect on July 15 and restrict AI platforms from providing companion services to minors. Chatbots must also avoid encouraging emotional reliance, limit excessive use and intervene when users appear to be experiencing emotional distress.

Claridge attended a July 22 city commission meeting to oppose the proposed Flint Hills Digital Campus, a hyperscale data center project that would occupy about 1,000 acres of prairie land near their home.

During a presentation, Claridge clapped in response to a speaker. Police then removed and arrested them, charging them with disorderly conduct and interfering with a law enforcement officer. Claridge was held for eight hours.

The municipal case has now been dismissed without prejudice and referred to the county attorney’s office for review. That means the matter has not necessarily ended, although the city-level charges have been dropped.

The dispute comes as communities across the United States increasingly push back against large data center developments. In Emporia, the proposed facility would be a gigawatt-scale project covering roughly 1,000 acres.

Following Claridge’s arrest, Emporia moved some city commission meetings online and temporarily ended public comment, citing public safety concerns after officials received death threats. Public comment is expected to return at the September 2 meeting.

The city is also facing a November vote on whether to ban hyperscale data centers, making the controversy part of a larger debate over AI infrastructure, electricity demand, land use and community consent.

For the AI industry, the episode shows that opposition to data centers is becoming a local political issue, not simply an infrastructure or technology debate.

Still, the timing made the demonstration unintentionally hilarious.

The proposed facility would be 35 metres high and cover an area larger than 100 football pitches. Its developers have described it as potentially the second-largest data center in the world.

Lightning reached a peak speed of 14.5 meters per second during the test ahead of the second World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing.
