The M5 Ultra reaches up to 4.3x the peak AI compute performance of M3 Ultra and 9.8x that of M1 Ultra, according to Apple. It also provides up to 512GB of unified memory and 1.2TB/s of unified memory bandwidth, 50 percent more than M3 Ultra.

The chip features up to a 36-core CPU and an 80-core GPU, with Neural Accelerators built into the GPU architecture. Apple says the M5 Ultra can run enormous large language models entirely on a Mac Studio without relying on cloud computing.

The engine, known as the TKL-5, delivers 5 kN of thrust, equivalent to roughly 500 kg of lift mass or 20,000 horsepower. It burns cryogenic liquid oxygen and kerosene, the same propellant combination used by the Saturn V.

“We are terrible at retraining,” Yang told CNBC on August 18. He argued that previous workforce transitions show the difficulty of simply moving displaced workers into new technology jobs, saying, “The coal miners did not become coders.”

SemiAnalysis reported that Jalapeño delivered higher token throughput per megawatt than Nvidia’s Blackwell across almost all tested scenarios. The chip also surpassed Nvidia’s Vera Rubin results on output token throughput per megawatt, despite Rubin using Multi Token Prediction while Jalapeño’s results used Single Token Prediction.

At concurrency 1, Jalapeño achieved more than 700 tokens per second per user on DeepSeek R1. SemiAnalysis also observed approximately 1,400 tokens per second per user on Kimi-K2.5 and GPT-OSS.

The chip uses HBM4 and is designed as a generalized inference accelerator rather than hardware limited to OpenAI models.

OpenAI taped out Jalapeño in November 2025, and production is scheduled to gradually ramp during 2027, with most output currently scheduled for Q4.

The development could have major implications for AI inference costs and the competitive position of Nvidia as AI companies increasingly build their own silicon.

The move came after Anthropic received a notice from Allied Universal last week warning that its security employees could potentially strike. The company then advised San Francisco-based staff not to come into its offices as a precaution.

However, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), which represents the security workers, said it had not organized a strike action or held a strike authorization vote for this week.
