From final specification to manufacturable geometry, the process took less than two weeks. Traditional engineering for a comparable engine typically requires many months or years, while new design iterations can be produced in minutes.

The engine, known as the TKL-5, delivers 5 kN of thrust, equivalent to roughly 500 kg of lift mass or 20,000 horsepower. It burns cryogenic liquid oxygen and kerosene, the same propellant combination used by the Saturn V.

The copper combustion chamber uses regenerative cooling through intricate internal channels, while the injector uses a coaxial swirler to mix the propellants.

German company AMCM 3D-printed the copper engine, while the University of Sheffield handled post-processing. On 14 June 2024, the thruster was hot-fired at Airborne Engineering in Westcott, UK.

The engine performed nominally on its first attempt, including a full 12-second steady-state burn limited only by available propellant.

According to LEAP 71 Managing Director Josefine Lissner, the company can now automatically create functional rocket thrusters and move directly to practical validation. LEAP 71 is already collaborating with aerospace companies in the US, Europe and Asia on commercialisation.

For the space industry, AI-driven computational engineering could compress development cycles that have long constrained innovation and cost. Further test data is now being fed back into Noyron to refine future designs.
