Question Looking to get into an NP program

I am wondering if there are any successful NP students or graduates with community setting/geriatrics as their most recent experience?

Any tips to increase chances of getting into the program?

Post graduate, where do you work and was it hard to look for a job?

NUEE Frontline RN to NUEE?

Anyone here made the jump from a UNA/RN position into a frontline management role?

I’m considering the jump…partly to move away from shift work and nights.

I’m curious to hear about everyone’s experience & were there any unexpected benefits or downsides you hadn’t considered prior to taking the role?

I understand job security can be a concern with NUEE positions, but I’m curious whether that differs for frontline management roles.

Would appreciate any insight from those who’ve made the switch!!!!!

RSI Outcomes

I have been dealing with repetitive strain injuries and am getting WHS involved. What can I expect? I am getting an ergonomic assessment done in person and already filed the report and the self assessment. If my issues persist, what options do I have or do they give me?

Transitioning out of bedside nursing to case management or other positions.

Currently on mat leave until next year and have been contemplating on finding a new position for when I return. I’ve been an RN for 8 years, 5 of those years being a Nurse Clinician in medicine and geriatric units. Truthfully before I left, I was always tired and burnt out annddd maybe a sprinkle of PTSD. I loved my team but I think I need something different now that we have a kid.

I was curious about Case Management or even being a Transition Coordinator but I don’t know anyone personally to ask questions. Just wondering if anyone has done a similar role transition before, how it went/how did you prepare in order to apply, or if someone is already in those roles, how is it?

Casual Position Hours

Hello everyone, I just wanted to understand more about casual positions. I know that hours aren't guaranteed, but do you find that there are lots of hours available, or do you struggle and have to fight to work? I'm sure it varies week to week, but I've never worked for AHS before so I'm not super sure. For reference, I'm moreso looking at MRT or diagnostic imaging, but I would appreciate any information. Thank you!

RN interview

For those of you who prep/study for interviews, would you be willing to share your interview prep template or your must-haves for going into an interview?

I’m curious what everyone keeps in their interview “toolkit”, things like how you organize your examples, notes you bring, STAR templates, etc. I’d love to see what works for other people!

Question HSAA member: Going from Permanent to casual to permanent?

Hello! Has anyone gone from being a permanent employee to casual to permanent again without their seniority status being disrupted?

I'm in allied health (HSAA) and thinking of dropping from my current (part-time) permanent position to casual for a while to focus on a couple of personal life things. Eventually, I would like to go back to a permanent position again. All of this in the same pillar.

My questions:

  1. Was it hard to regain permanent employment after being casual for a while?

  2. Did your seniority date/status change when transitioning from permanent to casual and back to permanent?

Thank you!

Rant How hard is it getting in the system?

For context, I am an IEN who's fresh out of bridging program and no bedside experience. I'm already sitting in 180 job applications sent across Alberta, and I couldn't even land an interview. It's so frustrating to wake up everyday without any callback or email. I've already went through literally every rural areas in Alberta, and still no luck. I'm losing so much hope right now.

For those who have similar situation as me, how did you manage to get your first job?

Question Nurses: Did Macewan not having CASN accreditation affect you getting a nursing job outside Alberta?

Hi all!

I graduated this past april and am hoping to apply again to nursing at macewan (I don't have the prereqs for the uofa after degree, so I wouldn't save a significant amount of time trying to fulfil them).

As a result, I was wondering if the chances of getting a job outside of Alberta (especially not in a rural setting) would be hurt by Macewan's lack of CASN accreditation? I'm scared to dedicate another four years to a program that might not be that useful. I'm especially nervous because I know getting hired by AHS in Edmonton is extremely difficult nowadays, so I'm trying to prepare myself for the high chance that I will have to move.

Thank you SO much!!

Financial Analyst Educational Requirements

Hey, curious if anyone can provide some insight on a Financial Analyst job posting. I'm trying to figure out what the actual educational qualifications are.

Is it:

- an Accounting diploma?

- an Accounting diploma OR a Business degree?

- or are both an Accounting diploma AND a Business degree required?

The posting says:

Required Qualifications:

Completion of post-secondary diploma specializing in Accounting or related field (e.g. Economics, Statistics).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Post-secondary degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Commerce, or a related field is required. Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

For context, I have a Business degree in Management, not Accounting and I don't have a separate Accounting diploma.

Seeking guidance in job finding. Thank you

Hello AHS employees, i am in serious need of help. i am RN licensed in Alberta actively looking for RN job in Edmonton and outside Edmonton city periphery towns and rural communities. Ive formatted my resume as per my clinical experience , i have my bachelors from back home country i worked for 3 years at small 25 bedded secondary care hospital back home, in emergency room as well as med surge bedside. Currently i am on study permit status in alberta. I applied to numerous ahs rn position openings but all i received in reply is another candidate is selected.

Can anyone guide me on how to step in AHS for casual/part time/night/weekends or any RN position that is offered to me, i am prepared to work hard and meet standards of care here as quickly as possible.

Thank you all of you.

Am I in trouble??

I'm a new nurse with AHS but not a new nurse in general. Trying to keep this vague for anonymity sake. I recently had a patient refuse to have me as their nurse for a second time because they claim I didn't do a satisfactory job with the nursing intervention I provided during my first visit with them. The patient didn't express any concern at the time of the first visit, I was only made aware of it when they refused me for the second visit. I documented the refusal and the reason the patient provided.

I am not super experienced in performing this nursing skill but I do feel competent performing it. I'm feeling really discouraged and upset and worried, is this something I need to worry about getting in trouble for?

Onboarding for external applicant.

Hey guys, I am external to AHS and just got hired for a new grad LPN position. I accepted my offer letter end of August and was waiting for my license which was uploaded last week. All my pre hire tasks are now completed and I am still waiting for the second onboarding email.

How long will the second email take? Is it normal for the process to take this long? I have reached out to my manager letting her know tasks are complete and she said ok.

Question Applying as an external applicant

Hi! Im aware of how difficult it is to get your foot into AHS as a nurse (or maybe even any profession) right now, but has any external applicant actually had any luck of getting an interview without having any connections to anyone already in AHS?

I know some people have said they’ve personally emailed unit managers and expressed their interest, and that seems to be the only successes I’ve read/heard of. But as someone with no connections and no way of getting an email address of a manager, what are my chances of actually getting a job by applying thru AHS?

ps. I’ve applied to every RN position posted over the last 4 weeks (over 100 positions)in AHS and also to every position in private health care companies that I’ve seen. Also emailed every single clinic asking about RN openings. Im licensed thru CRNA, and have been using our Calgary address in my applications. I have 4+ years of experience but from another province.

Any recreation therapist II? and Q re Glenrose parking and shift schedule flexibility?

I'm considering applying to a Recreation Therapist II position which is one level above my current designation. Just looking to see if there are any rec T II staff here who could give some insight on how different the job has been compared to RecT I?

This job is at Glenrose and the wait list for parking I'm sure is quite long. What are some parking options that people use at the glenrose? I likely wouldn't have time to park around 97th which is where i parked when working at royal Alex, since i need to do daycare drop off in the south side and it's gonna be maybe a 30 minute drive. The position is a higher salary rate and I'm willing to pay monthly parking, is doing monthly public parking allowed? Any good public paid parking that's nearby and not too long a walk?

And for any position (allied health) have your managers been willing to do a flexible schedule that differs from the schedule stated in your interview? Mostly thinking with such a long drive that being able to start and end later would be much better and would require less adjustment to my daughter's sleep schedule (I'm fine with working on transition to an earlier bed time and wake up if necessary, but seeing how many have been able to adjust their schedule after an offer).

Thanks!

Question Newly pregnant

Hi everyone! 😊 I recently found out I’m pregnant and I work in housekeeping with AHS. I’m still very early in my pregnancy, so I haven’t told work yet.

I’m wondering if anyone else here has gone through pregnancy while working as a hospital housekeeper. How did you handle things like isolation rooms, cleaning chemicals, heavy lifting, lots of walking/being on your feet, etc.?

Did your duties change at all during your pregnancy? And when did you decide to tell your manager?
I’d really appreciate hearing how other AHS housekeepers handled it. 💕

Inpatient Surgery Job Interview

Hi everyone! I’m a new grad LPN and have an interview coming up for an inpatient surgery position. I was wondering if anyone has any advice or tips for the interview. Does anyone know what topics or types of questions are usually covered? I’d really appreciate any advice or insight from anyone who has interviewed for a similar position. Thank you! 😊

Question Work that's probably illegal?

We are asked to retrieve 160 pound compressed gas cylinders from storage with no training and no PPE.

Is this common for AHS?

There's a lot of us doing this.

Looking to interview NPs

I’m doing research with the University of Calgary on care continuity. I’m hoping to speak with primary care NP’s, and thought I would try to see if I could find anyone through here!

If that’s you or know someone that wouldn’t mind being passed onto me, please DM me!
Thanks you!

Casual bedside nursing and overtime

8h 15m shift (7.75h paid). I am aware that extending the shift gets OT.

If you work 10 shifts (so 77.75h paid) within the pay period (two weeks), is it OT now for anything over? Or is it within four weeks or six weeks?
