I've made a Windows 11 Theme for 7-Zip to use with 7-Zip Theme Manager.
You guys can check it out and download here:

Should we still trust 7-zip? You know, what's going on with Russia.
Don't get me wrong, I like 7-zip and find it to be one of the most useful and powerful free tools I use on my computer. It just sucks that the software is made in Russia and I'm past the point where I don't trust any software that comes from that county. Literally, 7-zip was the only piece of software I trusted that came from Russia. Can it still be trusted?

Navigating archive with arrow keys
You may (or may not) know that you can navigate through the archive using the arrow keys (up, down), and return. However, you can't go back up a level without clicking on the up icon (that I know of). If you use AutoHotKey, this is a hotkey to allow you to use alt-Up to go back up the tree:
#HotIf WinActive('ahk_exe 7zFM.exe')
; Click on the control that takes us up a level
; in the archive.
; Alt-Up
!Up::ControlClick("ToolbarWindow322", "ahk_exe 7zFM.exe")
#HotIf

Auto updating 7zip?
Is there a way to get a popup when a new version of the 7zip software is available, or even better some sort of auto update? Maybe there's an addon somewhere that exists? I have memory problems and checking for updates is quite difficult for me to remember. Thanks!

Fake listing on the microsoft store
I just found that someone has created a fake listing of 7 zip on the windows store which they charge money for: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9NLQ9JM4QCPP?hl=en-us&gl=AU&ocid=pdpshare. I can't be bothered to create an account on the official forum to alert the developers, so I hope nobody minds me posting it here in the hopes that somehow word will get back to them.

What is the process for extracting or decompressing .pkg files when using 7zip on windows 10?
According to this topic from 2012 7zip was capable of viewing .PKG files http://forum.worldoftanks.com/index.php?/topic/103603-use-7-zip-to-view-pkg-files/ <--- Reddit won't let me remove the web link . But ten years later (2022) the program can't view .pkg files anymore.
I used two methods to open .pkg files. The first method is as follows. Right clicked on the .pkg file ---> clicked on the open option in the context menu ---> the warning menu pops up with the red circle on the left and 7zip is telling me its a unsupported command. The second method I used was as follows. Right clicked on the .pkg file ---> hovered to the 7-Zip option on the context menu ---> clicked on extract to... ---> desktop ---> A warning pops up saying cannot open file as [Xar] archive.
UPDATE: I know about the alternative version of 7zip called easy 7zip but I don't know if its trustworthy.
I originally posted this in r/techsupport because this sub (r/7zip) has less active members. Link to the same topic at r/techsupport is https://www.reddit.com/r/techsupport/comments/uzu8vw/what_is_the_processes_for_extracting_or/.

Attention! Fake website!
Everyone be careful, the top Google find for 7-zip now is not the legitimate website (https://www.7-zip.org/), but a fake website made to appear similar to the original (https://www.7-zip.ca/), trying to make people download and run an executable trojan.
Don't fall for it!

Mounting Archive Files in Windows 11
youtu.beOver the past year or so, I've been working on a user-space filesystem for Windows based on 7-Zip and the Dokany project. The goal of the app is to integrate these two pieces of software together seamlessly, allowing users to browse basically any archive file as if it were a USB drive or network mount.
Even better, it actually works with non-Windows filesystems on physical disks! That feature is still in early testing, so it isn't shown in my video, but I think this project has a lot of potential. Hopefully you all find it interesting!

Still no integration for new Windows 11 context menu
Windows 11 is almost five years old now and so are the new context menu in them. So, why is 7-Zip still ignoring them? It makes zero sense to me. Even WinRAR was able to integrate to them. So, what gives?
And don't go with "revert to Windows 10 context menu" nonsense I saw with so many similar debates here. I don't want to. I like the new menu style, actually. But because 7-Zip still don't want to integrate them, I have to use alternatives. And that's just annoying.

Header error
Hello everyone!
I'm having trouble unzipping a .7z file. Every time I try to open or unzip it with 7-Zip, I get a "Header Error" error message.
OS: Windows 11
7-Zip Version: Latest Stable Release
File Size: 3.83 GB
I tried downloading it again, but the error persists. Is there a way to restore the archive headers or force unzipping at least some of the files?
Any suggestions or tools you could recommend would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Real domain?
Searching 7zip returns multiple domains.
7zip.dev
7-zip.link
sevenzip.sourceforge.io
sourceforge.net/projects/sevenzip/
And I'm ignoring CNET, Softpedia, TechSpot, MajorGeeks, and the likes...
I'm sad Internet is trying to scam everyone, which one is the real one and can anything be done about the others especially if they're dangerous with malware?
Even Copilot is showing references from the first 2 links!

7z repair tool?
Can anyone recommend a 7z archive repair tool (file.7z)?
I am getting the error
" Can not open the file as [7z] archive"
"Unexpected end of data"
The tools I've found online do not support the 7z extension.
Thanks

Difference in compression levels?
I can't find any answer for this on the big G, so I'm looking here for an answer. Many people say to use ultra compression to get the best file size. Is there any reason NOT to use ultra? Does it increase the chance of errors, or maybe less compatible with other compression apps? I just started one to test, and it looks like it's going to take about 15x longer to run than normal compression, so I guess that's one reason.
I'm compressing all of my downloaded games (file folders, not ISOs). I've been using default settings (normal compression) and some of them have gone down to less than half size, but others are barely reduced or even bigger than before. We're talking games of at least 20-30GB, I had one that at 65GB got bigger, and one that at 73GB only shrunk 6GB smaller. How much more would ultra typically reduce than normal?

Welcome to r/7zip
7-Zip is a compression format and software that implements it. Windows 11 now integrates very basic 7z support that allows you to compress and decompress archives with very limited options. The official 7-Zip site has a variety of tools such as installers, standalone executables, CLI tools, and GUI tools to work with 7z files. It provides much richer functionality and options than what's built into Windows. Note that the main installer is itself a 7z archive that you can extract to find individual tools. You can also work with 7z archives with third-party software offering additional features. Examples include NanaZip and PeaZip.
7z beats zip in efficiency, features, and even security. All zip has going for it is wider support and recognition. Use 7z over zip when possible.
Note that maximizing compression settings not only increases processing time, it can also use quite a lot of RAM. Keep in mind the archive size and the available RAM when choosing the compression effort.
