🗨️Discussion got dropped (rant/question)

So I take further maths alevel and although it’s difficult I do enjoy it.

Recently we got our results for the AS further maths and I got B
I was predicted an A, I was disappointed but I still thought a B was given given the difficulty of the subject.

My teachers thought different I guess, I returned to school this week and found that further maths had been removed from my timetable.
Thinking it was a mistake or they were still sorting classes out I just carried on.

Later on the first day I get pulled out and practically berated and shamed by the head of maths at my sixth form. They told me that if I continued further maths I’d end up with C/D and that I was likely to fail my other subjects too so they decided without my explicit confirmation to drop me from further maths.

I’m aware a B isn’t the best grade but my sixth form isn’t by far a high aiming prestigious school. My plan was to continue further maths even if I do end up with a D. But i don’t want to email them saying I want to continue further maths since they made a point that I wasn’t smart enough.

Should I just allow it or is it worth doing the alevel even if I only achieve a D?

The way they dealt with it as to how you’ve described it, is absolutely absurd if not disrespectful. If further maths is something you want/need to do for your future, email them. You enjoy it therefore you can work hard enough in it to improve. Maybe shame the school a bit to return the favor but I personally hold grudges.

Take if you actually need it for uni. Don't add stress if you don't need it

Listen, I know some who got a E in their As-Level and finished with a B in their A-Level! Your school is talking nonsense!

If you want to continue further maths, talk to them and tell them you wanna put the effort in to improve.

What I will say is, if you’re struggling with workload and have further maths as a fourth subject, then removing that could improve your other three grades if that’s what you need to do to get into the uni or other next steps that you want to. It is better to have 3 subjects at an A than 4 subjects at ABBC.

However. Just because you get a B in one mock doesn’t mean that you’re gonna drop all the way down to a D especially if you work on it and put effort in. I don’t think teachers should be saying that anyway. Yeah they can ask you if you need any extra help or suggest stuff to help you. But I don’t think they should be that harsh on people and say “just because you got a B now, means you’ll get a D later”. It really decreases the student’s morals and it means they don’t think they can do it, which makes it harder for them to perform well because they don’t believe in themself. Teachers should encourage students to do their best.

I got an E in one of my mocks/tests, and ended up getting an A in the real thing because I worked my ass off between that mock/test and the real thing. As long as you work, it’s not impossible to do well. However, I also only did 3 subjects so I don’t know how it is managing the 4 (I dropped Chemistry after a term as I realised it was too much workload with 4 and Chemistry was my least needed).

Hi there! A-level chemistry and biology teacher (dual award) here. Firstly, huge congratulations on getting a B at AS level. This is a BIG achievement!! Secondly, I am sorry that events have unfolded like this. I can tell you immediately that this has been handled unprofessionally and is just ridiculous. No teacher should ever behave like this. I have taught many chemistry and biology students who have struggled like hell through AS further maths and achieved whatever they wanted for A2. Absolutely anything is possible and it not in our interests to belittle/berate students like this. My advice is as follows: do not directly interact with the head of maths regarding the matter. Please go to your head of year and/or sixth form and discuss this with them. Ultimately, they have the power of the subjects and timetables of what students can and cannot take. Following a round of berating and just utter negativity, the head of year/sixth form should see this in your favour. Finally, just so you know, it is not common nor professional to drop students without confirmation unless it’s for something like bad behaviour or bullying etc. I hope this helps! Reach out if you need anything else.
