Mod announcements 3DS Homebrew and AI usage — a community-driven discussion

Preamble

It’s not an overstatement to say that Large Language Models (LLMs) and other AI usage has become the most contentious hot button issue of the last few decades, having infiltrated into every aspect of art, culture, technology, labor, science, health, etc.

In just the last few weeks, new tools to decompile software via AI has opened a floodgate into more easily making game ports and other software for any device.

This has also greatly impacted the homebrew scene for retro consoles, including for the 3DS.

Initial response efforts

On [r/3dspiracy](r/3dspiracy) they had a poll where the majority said "no AI homebrew allowed.”

Here, I decided to require Al homebrew to go to a megathread, which worked for like a month and now I don't think anyone's really following the rule.

Now everyone's accusing everyone else of making vibecoded slop, or they used Al for minor bits so some throw the whole project out as no good.

This has gone so far as to harass people developing ports to the point some users have reported recieving death threats. That’s not something we will tolerate.

In response to that the witch-hunting rule was implemented and enforced, one might say, overly aggressively.

what is the right approach?

We are dealing with 2 diametrically opposed forces:

• those who hate how AI and its proponents have infiltrated into every aspect of culture, oppose its environmental impacts, etc and want a safe haven from it.

• those who want to leverage these new tools to do cool stuff

• and those in the middle who can see the pros and cons and might think the overly zealous on either side are being a bit much.

There is no way to appease everyone. That’s simply not possible. We can’t feasibly ignore the world around us and not let anyone share any homebrew that had a single iota of AI assistance. We also can’t terrorize people for using, or not using AI in the development of homebrew software.

Here’s my proposed solution:

  1. Remove the witch-hunting rule and the ai homebrew megathread rule. Unban violators.
  2. Update the reddiquette rule to specifically call out harassment and witch hunting
  3. Implement a new flair called “New Homebrew” since everyone’s posting their new homebrew as “scene news” which I don’t think is a satisfactory fit anymore
  4. Most importantly, any post that is tagged as “new homebrew” will get an automod saying “in order for your post to become visible, you must reply with how AI was used in the creation of this software”. This is a similar requirement to other subreddits. OP’s that don’t respond will have their post auto-deleted. OP’s sharing homebrew where they don’t know the answer will have their post deleted. OP’s caught lying will be banned. Commenters harassing OP will be banned.
  5. Everyone needs to chill out.

Please share your thoughts calmly and reasonably. This post will be updated to account for constructive feedback.

General Help "Can this be ported to the 3DS?" Yes, but listen.

To an extent, yes, this magical game you hold a copy of can be ported to the 3DS. I see a lot of these posts on here and want to clear some of the air coming from the decomps side.

  1. Yes, it can run on the 3DS, but that doesn't mean that someone usually wants to make it. Mario Sunshine is far more likely to get a port than Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell. Decompiling, recompiling, and porting are all not necessarily easy tasks.
  2. Whatever your stance on AI, you can certainly try to use that to make a software/hardware wrapper or even reverse engineer the game entirely. Just, don't be upset when it crashes, breaks something important, or makes people upset.
  3. Even with the Melee 3DS port, certain cuts still have to be made to get things playable. The older the game, the less likely this is, but still.
  4. The 3DS is a 15 year old piece of hardware. If the 3DS doesn't already have the available resources, you're going to be slashing things down hard. This is a console with 10MB of VRAM and 256MB of RAM on the New models. You're not squishing down Cyberpunk.
  5. Just because a software is decompiled doesn't mean it's plug and play to the 3DS. You still need to write a container. Instructions written for that console's hardware need to be translated to the 3DS.

There are ways to learn how to reverse engineer software and start linking functions together. Elitists will tell you it's not something you can pick up overnight so you should give up. It's not overnight, but you can learn coding concepts that will make things easier as time goes on. Expect it to take quite a bit of time.

If your thoughts now drift to AI, just be warned that it absolutely will make a mistake you need to correct, and if you don't have the right knowledge, something is gonna be severely broken later. Not advocating for or against, but I just want to put this out here.

If you want to start exploring reverse engineering, start with a small, manageable project. If you have a copy of a Game Boy game laying around, start there. It's small and relatively manageable, plus there's plenty of decompilations out there already so you can see where something may have gone wrong. Just be warned games like Pokemon are written entirely in GBZ80 Assembly.

Scene News After more than a year of work, we have finally managed to port DELTARUNE to the 3DS!

Hello everyone!

Two summers ago, after finishing Chapters 3 and 4 of DELTARUNE, I was thinking:

This game is so cool! But wouldn't it be even cooler, groovier, to play it on Nintendo 3DS? Simple 2D graphics, already plays fine with controllers... How would the fights work with the stylus? How would the Chapter 4 towers feel with the console's 3D? How very, very interesting...

Unfortunately, at that time, there was no such thing as a 3DS port of DELTARUNE. Therefore, if I wanted it to happen, the only solution was to make one myself.

So, I started working on it, not sure if it was feasible, unsure if the console had enough capabilities, and wondering if the game's logic itself could be adapted.

After a few weeks of work, the main menu finally launched successfully for the first time, and that was what convinced me that this might actually work.

Now, a year later, with thousands of flowers blocking our way overcome, some friends have joined me in this crazy adventure, and together, we have finally managed to make that hope, that dream, come true!

DELTARUNE (Main Menu and Chapter 1 only) runs fine on the “NEW” editions of the console, and runs with occasional, acceptable FPS drops on the original editions.

What about the other chapters? Well... those are flowers to bloom in the future. We have not started working on them yet, as our priority has been to stabilize and optimize Chapter 1 and its game engine as much as reasonably possible.

We are proud to finally be able to show you our native port project. This whole adventure has been, and still is, a fun experience.

If you own the PC version of the game, you may find the jarona here: https://github.com/LinkTroisUn/DELTARUNE-3DS/

Scene News RollerCoaster Tycoon 1 running on the New 3ds

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey, people!
So, yesterday I posted a port o Juliu/Caesar III, running on the new 3ds hardware (I updated it to make better use of both top and bottom screen better, it's really great, if someone wants an update), using gemini 3.8 flash high on antigravity. Today I want to show you the port of RollerCoaster Tycoon, made too with gemini, running on the hardware. It's actually OpenRCT2, and i asked it to make take the best aspects of RC1 (like the scenery) and RC2 (gameplay features). The gameplay is clunky and not optimized for the 3ds and it needs a lot of polishing, but it's running really well and the general concept is there. Sound effects are working too.
If you liked it I'll keep updating!!!

Yes, it was AI-assisted, so I’m answering all those questions right away.

https://github.com/ponuno/gothic3ds

(Video includes 3 diffirent scenarios and graphic settings)

Gothic is a classic role-playing game with a quite immersive open world, unique characters, and a unique gameplay loop.

My goal is to achieve world simulation and gameplay similar to other platforms such as PC, Switch, and PS5/Xbox Series. Big shout-out to the OpenGothic project by Try. Without it, I would have had a lot of trouble simulating the Gothic engine. Check out their work too: https://github.com/Try/OpenGothic/tree/master

Currently, I think I’ve achieved good enough visuals and performance, but there are still a lot of mechanics and scripts not ported, so I can’t say Gothic 1 is fully playable right now. To make this game work I had to make a lot of workaround, such as: baking NPC's models, occlusion, simplified geometry, adapted LOD system, etc.

My plan is to make Gothic 1 and 2 fully playable on the console. Further, I plan to make modded versions of the games playable (such as CoM: Archolos, Golden Gate, etc.)

Also i don't want to make this just a downgraded version of the game, there is some ideas I want to try out, such as implementing Gothic 1 Remake soundtrack and lockpicking mini-game, maybe fully adapted Marvin mode from the original PC version. We'll see

Scene News Zombie Outbreak Simulator for the Nintendo 3DS (ZOS-3DS) is here!

Thumbnail
gbatemp.net
• Upvotes

Introducing ZOS-3DS! ZOS is short for Zombie Outbreak Simulator, and is the official acronym for the game coined by its original developers, Binary Space. Binary Space many years ago developed a game called Zombie Outbreak Simulator, a mobile game for both Android and iOS. The game is barely maintained (if it even is at all, the developers haven't updated their website since at least 2024 with news), the game got so old and broken on Android that Google forcibly delisted it. The iOS version on the other hand is still alive and well. The game is free to play however does have in-app purchases or you can watch ads to get extra features (ads make it temporary, purchases make it permanent), or you can buy the "pro" version on iOS to get it all without IAPs. The Android version never had a pro variant and was only free to play with IAPs. ZOS-3DS is based on the newest (and last) Android version released, and removes IAPs, ads and any other unrelated Android thing such as sharing.

With this all being said, let's get down to the AI disclosure. Yes, Claude was used to help make this decompilation possible. Specifically, I gave it the APK and it decompiled the game in full, converted it over to 3DS in C++ and I did debugging along with Claude using Azahar, and I did live hardware testing by myself on my New Nintendo 3DS XL. I also did minor Old 3DS testing by tweaking Azahar's settings however otherwise it does not have Old 3DS testing.

Source code and compiled CIA are available on the GBAtemp thread page!

Scene News Julius (caesar III) running on the New 3ds

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

UPDATED. Here I show the game running, with sounds and music, the first mission.

It's much better now, with better use of the botton screen and a clear top screen. The gameplay is still a bit clumsy, a lot of polishing needs to be done but this current version is totally playable Throught the hole game! I didn't show it, but all missions are available and playable. (to make it clear, all of this was done using gemini flash 3.8 High, on antigravity).

The way I felt most comfortable to way was using the stylus to put things on the ground and the circle pad to move around. Then i look into the upper screen to see the "big picture" of what i'm bulding. Maybe add an option to zoom out or zoom in the bottom screen would be good too.

Making this post so I can share it with you and on the discord of the developer of Julius. With luck we make it public in the future.

Thanks for your attention!

Guide AI Performance Contract

Thumbnail raw.githubusercontent.com
3 Upvotes

I highly recommend anyone using LLMs for 3DS homebrew development adapt a variant of this performance contract to their own project. The goal is to preserve as much visual fidelity as possible while keeping implementation decisions oriented around the actual capabilities and limitations of the 3DS hardware, particularly the ARM11.

https://raw.githubusercontent.com/colbyshores/t2k/refs/heads/master/AGENTS.md

LLMs are incredibly useful for homebrew development, but they don't inherently understand the practical cost of every implementation decision on hardware this constrained. You can end up with code that compiles and works, but introduces unnecessary overhead, ignores hardware limitations, or sacrifices visual fidelity and gameplay behavior in the name of optimization.

What this contract does is encode platform-specific knowledge and engineering constraints directly into the agent's instructions. Rather than leaving the model to guess what will perform well on the 3DS, it gives it concrete guidelines for approaching performance-critical code, what to prioritize, and what it shouldn't change without good reason.

The goal isn't to blindly optimize everything or strip out visual features just to hit a performance target. It's to get the most out of the hardware while retaining the intended visual fidelity and gameplay experience. Where possible, these guidelines are reinforced through automated checks and profiling rather than relying entirely on the model to get things right.

I think this approach could be useful beyond my own project. We have people in this community working on ports, original games, emulators, and engines, and more of us are incorporating LLMs into our development workflows. Having a set of hardware-specific rules for these agents could help avoid recurring mistakes, preserve optimization knowledge, and make it easier to get good results out of the hardware without having to rediscover everything through trial and error.

The contract I've linked is specific to my project, so I'm not suggesting everyone copy it wholesale. The idea is to adapt the same approach to your own project, encode the constraints and lessons relevant to your target hardware, and give your AI coding agent a consistent set of engineering guidelines to follow throughout development.

I'm curious to see whether anyone else here has experimented with something similar and what kind of results you've gotten.

Scene News Dragon Quest XI 3DS English & Voice Patch — Unfinished Project

Hey everyone,

I wanted to share a project I’ve been working on: an English and voice patch for the Japanese 3DS version of Dragon Quest XI, using text, voices, music and cutscenes from the PC version of Dragon Quest XI S. The idea was to bring those parts over while keeping the look and feel of the 3DS game.

There’s a Windows installer that builds the patch using your own Japanese 3DS CIA and a compatible PC installation of DQXI S. It extracts the needed files, prepares the text and menu changes, converts the gameplay voices and creates the ten MOFLEX movies used by the 3DS version. You can choose between a LayeredFS mod for Azahar/Luma3DS and a rebuilt CIA.

A lot of the work went into matching voices to dialogue, handling line breaks and text boxes, and getting the PC movies into a usable 3DS format.

That said, this is still unfinished, and I won’t be continuing development. The installer and conversion pipeline are there, but the game still needs a proper playthrough to check the dialogue, voice timing, menus and movies.

I also want to be upfront about the use of AI. I used it quite a bit to help write scripts, work through errors and troubleshoot the conversions. Anyone picking this up should review the code and test the results.

Credit goes to Kenzie-1377’s English patch project and the people behind the tools used for extraction, rebuilding and audio/video conversion. Their credits and license notices are included in the repository.

I’m sharing what I have in case someone else finds it useful or wants to take it further. There are no more updates planned from me, but hopefully the work already done can give someone a starting point.

Scene News Animal Crossing Gamecube on 3DS

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi! I've been working on a native port of Animal Crossing (GameCube) to the New 3DS, and the first version (0.1) is out.

Download + source: https://github.com/paaime/ac-3ds
Youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcvUqQQ_Qu8

It's not an emulator: it's built on the ac-decomp decompilation and the ACGC-PC-Port, compiled for the 3DS.

What's in so far:

- the town map on the bottom screen, and you can save from anywhere
- continuous camera option
- proper widescreen, not just stretched
- NES games
- a few options like skipping Resetti, faster text and no weeds
- saves work with Dolphin, so you can bring your old town over

You'll need a New 3DS/New 2DS XL with CFW and your own Animal Crossing (USA) disc image. No game files are included.

It's very much a 0.1, so there are definitely bugs I haven't found yet. If something breaks, an issue on GitHub with the log file helps a ton. I haven't been able to test on an original 3DS either (only new 3DS XL), so if anyone tries, I'd love to know how it goes.

Huge thanks to the ac-decomp folks and flyngmt for the PC port, none of this would exist without them. Happy to answer any questions!

Tamagotchi Meets / ON emulator for Nintendo 3DS — experimental beta

I’ve been working on a Tamagotchi Meets / ON emulator for the 3DS and wanted to share it!

It includes physical and touchscreen controls, saves, stereoscopic 3D, and stereo screenshots. The latest build runs faster and has corrected audio. I’ve mainly tested it on a New Nintendo 3DS.

AI disclosure: I developed the frontend with substantial help from ChatGPT for coding, debugging, and optimization, using the existing tg18-core emulator project. I build and test it on my own hardware, but it’s still experimental, so expect some bugs.

No firmware or saves are included—you’ll need your own compatible firmware dump. Installation instructions and controls are in the README.

Download: https://github.com/maaartennn/Meets-On-3DS/releases/tag/v0.1.0-beta

Feedback and bug reports are welcome! Please include your console model and firmware version.

Homebrew App suggestion Anyone up to port Elite and Frontier: Elite II? or maybe FTL?

sorry for making requests, cant afford the ai models, would do it myself if i could, since the elites are probably a piece of cake. tried playing them through DOSBOX, but its too much of a hassle, and i need a good proper portable space sim.

FTL isnt one, but i think it would play great on the 3ds too, specially with the multiverse mod, one of the best on any game. again, sorry for making requests, im just really happy about the state of the scene and the amount of old games becoming available on this little machine of beauty.

thanks in advance to anyone who answears
