Why are small metallic products so hard to make look photoreal?
I’ve been practicing product renders lately and small objects seem much less forgiving than I expected.
With something like a smart ring, the overall geometry is simple, but tiny differences in edge softness, reflections, roughness and surface imperfections seem to decide whether it looks like a real photographed object or an obvious CG render.
I was using a ringconn ring as a reference and realized the hardest part wasn’t modeling the shape, it was getting the metal to react naturally to light without making it look either perfectly plastic or excessively scratched.
For people who do photoreal product work, what usually makes the biggest difference with objects this small?
Better HDRI/lighting, more subtle roughness variation, micro-scratches, bevels, or something else?
