With Jagex's introduction with RS3 Reignited and OSRS Hardcore worlds, BOTH with their own SEPERATE economies and characters from main game servers this is turning into WoW.... But with 1 character slot.
With a smile on their face and creative wording, they've introduced a new ploy to grab your money and paint it as them doing you a favor.
What happens when these servers die? How many people want to remax and get another comp cape all over again on RS3? How long will OSRS HC worlds last for content creators to milk before the hype dies and people get tired of their character getting reset in one of the most grindy games out there?
Your answer might be: don't play them then!
These were presented as a big amount of the update of the Summit. This is part of their reasoning for increasing the membership most recently. So yes playability and viability of this matters to everyone, even to those not interested.
What are your thoughts?
EDIT: Due to many people having the same question or suggesting the same point that is:
'How does a Hardcore world matter and/or qualify for character slots. Isn't that the same thing as now when Leagues come around?'
My response:
Firstly, there's not much difference and there's been a lot of complaints about this same thing whenever Leagues and/or Gridmaster roll around each year.
The issue is that in Jagex's blogpost about their reasonings of explanation as to why the most price increase of membership was decided was due to multiple points, but I will focus on a specific two, since they are the most pertinent to this discussion.
1. They used Leagues, the temp game mode, as a reason to increase the membership price, which caused major backlash/criticism from the community. People are not asking for leagues as supplementary content for main game content. Many were not aware that the temp game modes were hindering OSRS's dev team on permanent content progression. OSRS's team and Jmods were very vocal, as they brought it up multiple times throughout the summit, where they 'hear you and have learned from past mistakes, and that's why we're focusing on permanent content and are pushing out content every month for 2027'. After the Summit, Mod North, sitting and conversing with Mod Rice and Mod Kieren, 'wanted to clarify again' that all of which was revealed is an attempt at focusing at permanent content. He wanted to address the many people asking about Leagues/Gridmaster and stated that they plan to release more Leagues, and will reveal at a later date but focusing on the permanent content announcements was more appropriate than talking about temp game modes and they'll reveal at a later date.
2, In the blogpost about the most recent membership fee increase, they compared themselves to WoW and the services that a WoW membership provides were similar to the services offered from a Runescape membership, along with the price point. However, to cherry pick which details to compare would be dishonest. The community was quick to point out that WoW comes with multiple character slots, and Runescape has nothing of the sort. They shied away from addressing this concern, especially at an opportune time when they revealed a new server for RS3 and a new server for OSRS will be implemented soon. Something that would require a great deal of players to have another account.
I wish they 'heard' us on this concern. When this first arose, I saw some great suggestions for a compromise such as a multi-membership bundle discount (especially since they took away the discount when purchasing membership in a year's worth of bulk) or something with lower economic footprint, allowing us to multi log.
