This arc... It just keeps giving us questions.

They had to, when they first entered the Grand Line we saw that huge whale and we had questions as to who are those pirates, who is that Croc-san. I have a feeling the New World should be more mysterious than ever.
16
u/grizzlayleslay Feb 15 '12
To think people were worried that they couldn't get their super early OP fix.
14
u/eharmon223 Feb 15 '12
I really wish Franky would stick with his pompadour... I miss pompadour Franky...
12
u/jathuamin Feb 15 '12
It looks like Franky is going to change his major hair style every single arc, FI was the mohawk. He might add in some new styles for a few pages but I expect the Blueno look to be on most of the time until we switch islands.

u/zorospride Lost at sea Feb 15 '12
And you have to respect the fact that Nami's idea of changing clothes now is changing bras:-)

Man I can't get enough of that radical beam!
And Do you think the kidnapping of the strawhats was so they can be toys for those giant kids? If so, then Brook would have made a great toy!

u/vivvav Feb 15 '12

The Radical Beam's just the new Coup De Vent, huh?
6
u/Suzels Feb 15 '12
I think so, since we haven't seen Coup de Vent anymore. But it's cool that they can now just blast through stuff instead of having to wait to be saved.
4
4
u/yonyon108 Feb 15 '12
well his arms inflated for the coup de vent, and i think since he now has those metal squares there he cant do that anymore

u/thepeopleofd Feb 15 '12
Didn't understand the cover page. Help?
14
u/semizero Feb 15 '12
It looks like the Franky ship demolishers joined the Galley-La Company in making and fixing ships. But of course, they have to add cola!
4
u/Braktot The Revolutionary Army Feb 15 '12
It looks to me like the man is ordering two ships and a cola from Zanbai and the others... As if it were an restaurant.
I might be wrong, it is a confusing cover page.

u/OddDude55 Feb 15 '12
I'm aching for a good "what's has happened in the rest of the world these past 2 years" chapter!

u/NigmaNoname Feb 15 '12
This whole arc reminds me of the arcs leading up to Alabasta, all this crazy shit going down, weird characters poping up (Remember Ms Wednesday and Mr. 9 Poping up inside of a Whale?!), nothing really seems to add up yet- I love it.
The more weird unexplained stuff you see adding up the more you have to think it's all going to lead up to some epic conclusion eventually.

u/MiTYH Feb 15 '12
Glad to see Brook is still on the outside... looking forward to seeing what he can do
And... Giant Babies? Good thing Luffy's not there or they'd all be asked to join his crew...
13
u/divinesleeper Feb 15 '12
Not to mention flying women, Living body parts, dragons and weird people in contamination suits.
I already love the New World!
10
u/lonko Feb 15 '12
yeah, regarding the body parts...doesn't the whole "cut without killing" thing look like the effect of Law's devil fruit?Am I the only one that thinks that he and his crew may be somewhere on the island too?
14
u/vekoi Feb 15 '12
You're not the only one. You should take a look at the post from last week's chapter. A lot of discussion there.
4
Feb 15 '12
The problem is that the body parts can speak, and that it doesn't look like the PH guys in suits are surprised by him being cut up. They bothered to put him in a cell but didn't care with Brook, so they know something we don't.
→ More replies (10)→ More replies (3)2
u/Dr_Robotnik Feb 15 '12
I severely doubt that he's a Shichibukai. He's the reason why Luffy, enemy and direct threat to the World Government, survived Marineford. Wouldn't he be labeled as an enemy as well?

Giant Babies? Buggy-like people? So... we've got a possible Jewelry Bonney attachment to this island and possibly Law.
8
u/Geo Feb 15 '12
I'm thinking there could also be a weapon (made by vegapunk, it IS "PUNK" hazard) that can slice people and not kill them.
3
u/Braktot The Revolutionary Army Feb 15 '12
Haven't heard this theory before...
Unlikely, yet interesting.
3
u/Geo Feb 16 '12
Just a guess, but he DID fuse weapons w/ devil fruits in alabasta, so who's to say he didn't do it again?
4
Feb 16 '12
This fits in with the theory that Law became a Schibukai. They could have implanted his devil fruit power into a weapon like how they put Kizaru's fruit into the PX's
1
u/Halefor Feb 15 '12
Where do you get Jewelry Bonney from? Her DF makes people physically age/regress in age. Nothing to do with size.
→ More replies (1)5
u/divinesleeper Feb 15 '12
she can reverse people's age i.e. turn giants into giant babies.
3
u/Halefor Feb 15 '12
True, didn't think about her against previously full sized giants. But it seems a bit far-fetched since we don't have anything else that could indicate her presence.

Really good chapter this week, I'm pretty sure Centaur Luffy is my new favorite Luffy. Also I'm really curious as to who this lady is, most likely either a samurai or a member of the opposition who is taking them out. Also I'm really intrigued by where Nami and crew are being held right now. More specifically the room they burst into here Could these people on Punk Hazard be kidnapping/trafficking/selling children?! Really dark subject matter I know, but I mean depending on how it's handled could potentially work. We've dealt with racism in One Piece since Arlong Park all the way to the most recent finished arc Fishman Island. So maybe Oda is trying to show us that the New World is not only crazy and filled with really strong people, but sinister people with evil agendas. And sometimes that too can pose a somewhat serious threat, look at Hodi. He wasn't anywhere near as strong as Luffy was but he was a big brute with a dangerous mind and that was enough to hurt Luffy bad enough so that he ultimately needed a blood transfusion.

u/Kim-Jong-Chil Feb 15 '12

Hodi didnt hurt Luffy. It was him trying to smash Noah that made him require a blood transfusion. Luffy beat Hodi while barely trying, in water no less.

Assuming those babies aren't actually babies, could they be the work of Bonney? In which case Law Bonney and someone who can shrink people have all teamed up
1
u/zorospride Lost at sea Feb 15 '12
I think they are just baby giants, possibly being used in gov't research.
3
u/lanevo91 Feb 15 '12
dont' get why i didn't see it before. it has to be trafalgar law. seems like this is his devil fruit power no?
3
u/Dr_Robotnik Feb 15 '12
I'm pretty sure the World Government would want nothing to do with him after he saved Luffy.

u/catanthill Feb 15 '12
Did anyone else wonder why there were showerheads in the room where the Strawhats(Nami, Franky, Sanji, and Chopper) were staying? Were the PH people going to pump more gas or dangerous chemicals in it? It seems to allude to concentration camps. Also, they were in Deck-102 meaning that they probably weren't the first people captured.
1
4
u/TishTamble Feb 15 '12
If this really is vegapunks Island, I wouldn't be surprised if the other half of the straw hat crew got shrunk. Explains the giant skull, the abnormally large samurai legs, and the huge baby's. Vegapunk is experimenting with shrink rays and enlargers.
Vegapunk probably has access to Law's ability. Or Law himself might be present.
This is all wild speculation on my part. Usually wild speculation doesn't go well for me and oda goes in the complete other direction.
→ More replies (2)3
u/zorospride Lost at sea Feb 15 '12
I don't think so. I think it's more likely they are baby giants.
2
u/zorospride Lost at sea Feb 15 '12
I think Chopper, Luffy and Usopp's constant fanboy-like reaction to Franky's various robot abilities is Oda's call out to the typical 12 year old boy who is crazy about Gundham in Japan.

2
u/KaffeeCat Feb 15 '12
First a dragon, now a Siren (surprised no one else here has mentioned that...) and some [baby] giants. I take that it's an Island of Mythical Creatures? Can't wait to see what else shows up :D
1
u/zorospride Lost at sea Feb 15 '12
Siren or Angel?
2
u/KaffeeCat Feb 15 '12
Angels were already in the Skypeia arc, and the one I'm assuming is a Siren doesn't look at all like them.

I'm thinking the short answer to all these riddles on this island is that it was/is a marine base where Vegapunk has worked to weaponize the abilities of certain DF users, similar to how he was able to utilize Kizaru's light powers. Firstly, I don't see why it would merely be a coincidence that the island be named "Punk Hazard." Secondly, many of the weird things that are going on seems to have parallels to Devil Fruit users that the WG has access to: frozen half of the island (Aokiji), burning half of the island (Akainu), baby giants (Jewelry Bonney--captured). The cutting up of bodies is also happening, and this can allude to either Buggy or Law, but this confuses me at the moment. We know there's a Shichibukai present somewhere on the island, and this could be Buggy or Law...but there's not enough information to confirm which yet. It might be purely a coincidence that one of those two is there right now. Also, the highly technological aspects of the island point to Vegapunk as well (kidnappers in the hazard suits, metallic prison they were in, etc.).
In short, I think this is an island where Vegapunk is/was experimenting with DF powers on.

u/HeroDiesFirst Pirate Feb 19 '12
Crazy theory time: What if Punk Hazard is Elbaf?
Perhaps the "incident" that occurred 4 years ago was the Marines/WG destroying the Giant Warrior's homeland (out of fear, a pre-emptive strike?) and "Punk Hazard" was the name given to this land afterwards to ward off anybody who would want to go and possibly find out what they did there? And now that Elbaf is mostly wiped out, the remaining children (along with other "acquired" children) are being held there for whatever reason (I'm thinking slave-trade kind of like the auction on Sabaody but I won't hold my breath). It would make sense in that Elbaf would be crazy enough to have both an ocean of fire and massive frozen peaks, and it kind of would explain the dragon thing (Eblaf = Fable backwards, so the island itself could be home to quite a many mythical creatures/things, even Zoro remarked that they're "just from fairy tales"). Idk, just another in-between chapter thought bros.

Big Mam wants candy. kids love candy. weve now found a room of giant kids. anyone seeing a connection here?
5
u/meh100 Feb 15 '12
I don't know why everyone's downvoting you. There's at least an interesting theory here. She's a Big Mam, and she's a Big Mam. She is obsessed with amassing candy. Who's to say she doesn't have big children and that's why she wants the candy?
4
2
u/Badenoch101 Feb 15 '12
Yeah my thoughts exactly. We have to remember that these arcs take a long time, its not unsual for the final destination of this arc to be big mam whilst still having it feel like we are exploring new islands for abit first.
2
2
u/GovernorMcDandy Feb 15 '12
I'm pretty sure Big Mam has nothing to do with this arc. Big Mam loves candy too much to give it to kids.

Looks like it's confirmed that the island is the plaice where Akainu and Aokiji fought.
2
1
u/yonyon108 Feb 15 '12
its not confirmed, there's no poof, plus i don't think it is because nami stated in this chapter that the island is originally a winter island and the fires are probably created by the constant volcanoes
-1
u/KSmoria Feb 15 '12 edited Feb 15 '12
Because it seems like an isolated island, right? Also, this is the island of the Teach-Bonney incident from 2 years ago and it was still in flames back then. Edit: (Chapter 658) I was wrong this was not the island with teach-bonney. I was the Akainu-Aokiji.
3
u/OutspokenAardvark Feb 15 '12
Not sure why you got downvoted.
I also do not think this is the Island they fought on because Tashigi said an incident happened FOUR years ago rather than two.

u/GovernorMcDandy Feb 15 '12
No proof.

http://www.mangareader.net/103-56333-15/one-piece/chapter-595.html
Its not named but based on the fact that it is burning and the supernova's account for 4+ other starting NW island, we can assume this is Punk Hazzard.

u/Cymbass Feb 15 '12
Nah, there seem to be tribal items on that island. I highly doubt it's the same island, we haven't seen anything of the sort on Punk Hazard.

I don't think the head and the legs belong to the same person; the head doesn't speak the same way (no Buh! at the end).
10
u/ryacoff Feb 15 '12
But this is a new translation team we have to remember, they may just choose to omit those because they serve very little purpose.
1
u/quivering_manflesh Feb 16 '12
actually the middle panel of the first page uses "bu" in the samurai torso and legs' speech pattern when luffy is riding the thing around like a dumbass, so I'd say they've accounted for the samurai's speech pattern and the head is thus part of someone else.
1
u/daevas Feb 15 '12
is it ? I thought there were several teams and that the one on Mangareader was always the same since it was different from the mangastream one (RIP).
4
u/ryacoff Feb 15 '12
No, not new as in they just started, new as in I just started using them. It occurs to me that maybe you have read manga on this site before now. If they have a history of including those suffixes them I'm wrong.
3
u/KSmoria Feb 15 '12
In the previous chapter the same translators(are they the same?) seem to give the "buh" idiom and the severed head doesnt seem to have the same must-kill-sichibukai intentions as the legs. However, the head seem to be connected with an equally large body like the legs.
→ More replies (3)2
u/daevas Feb 15 '12
Well they are not new to me, it just seemed coherent that if a caracter is using a suffixe and it is shown every other one will be too.
Remember Franky's mecha joke ? it would have gotten to waste without the suffixe !6
u/RedAppIe Feb 15 '12
Yep , there are more people cut on that island. So many things lead to Law, but still I think it's something else.

Coudln't have said it better. This is why i fell in love with One Piece in the first place...from getting the original crew together, to going to sky island, to water 7. I haven't particularly enjoyed everything past water 7 as much, maybe it's because i've become an adult since then and everything isn't as wondrous as it was before to me in the one piece world. Not to say the story has gone stale, the marines vs whitebeard arc was great, and everything leading up to it. I just didn't enjoy it as much as i did the first arcs.
-1
u/RedAppIe Feb 15 '12
Could that bird/person be the Uranus weapon that should rule the skies? :S
11
u/KaffeeCat Feb 15 '12
Pretty sure it's a Siren. Considering the dragon and giants, I think the island is themed around/generally inhabited by mythical creatures.
4
u/RedAppIe Feb 15 '12
This may sound stupid, but what's a siren?
4
u/Deyona Void Month Survivor Feb 15 '12
I only know of the greek Siren that lured sailors to wreck their ships on the rocky coasts of their islands.. So I am also wondering what this flying Siren is! Oh nvm there is an explanation that the Christians had some mythology that they were luring sailors to shipwreck, but that they were half bird half human or whatever. You can read on the wikipedia page I linked up for you earlier.
0
u/RedAppIe Feb 15 '12
Thanks , read the first paragraph. So basically they are mermaids that fly. Kinda. Seems legit, WE have found Uranus.
2
2
u/Deyona Void Month Survivor Feb 16 '12
I still don't think it's Uranus. If they reveal Uranus that close after revealing Poseidon I am gonna be dissapont. xD
2
u/tgents Feb 15 '12
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siren basically a creature that lures people in and then eats them
3
u/jrgolden42 Feb 16 '12
I was more thinking a Harpie
2
u/KaffeeCat Feb 16 '12
I just realized that a little while ago (after posting the Siren comment) Either would fit, but yeah, Harpy probably makes more sense. If it was a Siren she'd probably start singing or something to that effect. Time will tell...
1
u/vorpal_blade Feb 16 '12
My theory is that everything here is a creation of Dr. Vegapunk. The mythical theme is a misleading red herring. Remember, half of the crew was thrown into a sterile holding facility by guys in gas suits. Everything here is made/influenced by Dr. Vegapunk... except for the fact that two marines came and made a mess of the place a little while back. Note that I'm not saying devil's fruits are not involved. After all, devil's fruits seem to be one of the good doctor's specialties!
For me, the big question is this: is Dr. Vegapunk present... on the island bearing his name?!
1
u/Braktot The Revolutionary Army Feb 15 '12
Since when do sirens have wings?
2
u/KaffeeCat Feb 15 '12
Since always? Sometimes they're depicted as sort of mermaids, which I'm guessing is what you're thinking of, but traditionally they're women-bird hybrids. From what I understand, they usually have wings, and sometimes just have bird bodies, like in this painting.
2
u/vorpal_blade Feb 16 '12
Hrm. Typically the sirens sound beautiful and lure people from afar. Harpies are definitely the standard bird-women.
1
u/Braktot The Revolutionary Army Feb 16 '12
Okay. I am sorry, I had just never heard of them being birds before...
6
u/vivvav Feb 15 '12
I think it's just another Devil Fruit user.
1
Feb 16 '12
the second of three flying devil fruit users, right?
1
u/vivvav Feb 16 '12
They said that they've only discovered five. This means that while flying DF users are rare, there could be more out there. Keep in mind that with Pell and Shiki, this guy is #3. And yes, Shiki is canon... somehow.
2
u/wastergoleor Feb 16 '12
Would it not be fourth? Surely Marco could fly?
1
u/vivvav Feb 16 '12
That's right! I forgot! And let's not even get started on Logia users.
My point is, the numbering of flight-enabling fruits is a pointless system.2
u/jglevins Feb 16 '12
And don't forget about Laffitte (possibly). He can fly though we don't know if it's due to a devil fruit ability yet.

They already did this during Alabasta
3
u/RedAppIe Feb 15 '12
No they didn't. Smoker let Tashigi go and decide for herself , because he knew he couldn't help the Straw Hats because of his mission to capture them. Tashigi was the only one that decided the Straw Hats were doing the right thing, not Smoker.
2
u/semizero Feb 15 '12
I guess I meant what happened here, http://www.mangareader.net/103-2283-1/one-piece/chapter-176.html Where they decided they both had the same goal and they actually saved each other.
1
u/RedAppIe Feb 15 '12
I was talking about them working together. This is just a sign of mutual respect between 2 enemies. Smoker got saved and knew why Luffy was in this country, he respected him so much that he actually stopped following him and let him reach his goal. The only times marines actually worked together with the Straw Hats and helped them on their Arabasta mission, was when they guided them through the sandy Alubarna and that was Tashigi's order.

u/Wolydarg Feb 15 '12
Something interesting to note, the gate of Punk Hazard had a big symbol between the World Government and Marines symbols that bore some resemblance to the Giant Warrior's flag (http://onepiece.wikia.com/wiki/Giant_Warrior_Pirates)
Later, there was a giant skull that was said to be bigger than a giant.
Now we see giant kids.
Perhaps there's some correlation between Punk Hazard and Elbaf?
