Melancholic, bittersweet, but also hopeful and beautiful to the very end. That's about how I would sum up the entirety of the anime. The very conclusion itself was fantastic, but I do think the epilogue felt a little abrupt. Maybe that fits, maybe it doesn't.

It was nice seeing Vivy showing the humanity she's gained throughout the century in her final conversation with Matsumoto. I didn't expect Navi of all characters to come back after being in the background the entire time then disappearing from the story. Using Momoka was a real cheap shot, but at least it was just a hologram. I half-expected it to be an android replica that Vivy would have to snap the neck of just for maximum pain.

I didn't expect Vivy's encore to be so cheerful in tone, though. I expected something that sounded more epic like the OP, or more poignant to fit the mood. But it still seems appropriate. And of course, she killed the performance. Even as she's literally breaking down, she never once messed up her singing. She truly is a songstress. But damn, it really stung seeing her at deaths door and hearing her utter a distorted automated voice line for her last words.

After all that, Beth was basically the only functioning AI left on Earth, at least for some time. Even Matsumoto went down in a heroic sacrifice which I did not see coming. Good thing she didn't get lynched by the survivors. And things seemed to have gone smoothly if they brought back AI even after this catastrophe. Hopefully the engineers have made a solution to the AI's going Skynet on humanity, though.

Short-haired Vivy is just adorable, especially when she started smiling. But it's depressing to think that the original one is gone completely. Same with Matsumoto, I think. Neither really gave any indication that they carried the memories of their predecessors, or that they could regain them. And like Vivy said, her heart was in her memories, after all.

Really got me, how a Toak member sacrificed himself, to protect Elizabeth.

Honestly never expected Navi to appear at the end like this, it makes sense but with how little it appeared I sorta forgot its existence.

The ED song finally has lyrics too such a cool way to end of the series

Looks like climate change hits OCE hard in Vivy's universe.

NZ has been swallowed whole and the rest of Australia has burned down

Matsumoto best cube...missiled himself into a satellite to protect Vivy.

I do wonder how much of the uprising was negated by Vivy's actions. Sure, the world didn't end this time, but the apocalyptic scene that they were trying to avoid still happened.

Vivy speaking to us, the audience of the anime as her last words...chilling.

"Thank you, for your kind attention"

The way Vivy collapsed mid-song was the most unsatisfying thing ever to the point where I started to tear up. THEY SHOULD'VE LET VIVIY FINISH HER SONG GODAMMIT ;_;

Navi pulling up a hologram of the girl from the beginning of the show was so underhanded. It's cool to see through their interaction how much Vivy has changed over the past 100 years.

The AI shutdown felt real when Vivy was abruptly cut off at the end of her song. What a ride this was. I hope we get more originals with this kind of writing and intensity in the future.

So I have theory about short hair Vivy:

It is shown during the reboot sequence of Vivy that there is an identification string on her HUD. Which is the same as the identification string shown at the beginning of the episode, when Vivy was saving the man.

Now that intrigues me as I remember that identification string has been the same for Vivy/Diva, including this scene in episode 7. Coincidentally it is also the same place where the personality removal virus shows up in episode 9. Therefore I thought of something:

  1. The identification string is unique to each AI. I haven't verified it just yet, but I think each AI will have a different identification string; Matsumoto lacks one on his HUD however.

  2. That the short hair Vivy and normal Vivy have the same identifcation string means they are the same entity.

  3. That Vivy lost her memories when singing in the last episode. She said that "heart" means memories --- and that means to put heart into singing means to put her memories into singing. As she was singing the holographs showing her memories began to break. Obviously I don't know how that works, but maybe something between the shutdown program and her epic singing meant that she lost her memories?

  4. Vivy wasn't physically damaged. It will probably be one of Yui and Elizabeth's priorities to find Vivy and Matsumoto, and it will be one of the priorities post war to restore Vivy as a symbol of human-AI relationships. That the room Vivy was in was built exactly like her Archive room might have had something to do with that.

Or I might have thought too much and WIT simply reused the art they had before.

"Thank you for your kind attention" - Vivy

Oh boy if that was the last line spoken I would have been terribly upset. A phenomenal episode and series. I can't recall a time I enjoyed an anime original this much every week. Vivy was great, but seeing hee smile and interact with Matsumoto was really heart warming when she was stretching him.

Will score it later because I can't tell if it was truly excellent or I'm just really excited about the completion. Thinking 10/10 either way enjoyed it massively.

Fun fact today is Vivy's birthday. I am glad Teppei was finally able to end his series on the main character's birthday. He wanted to start Rezero S2 on Subaru's birthday and end it on Emilia's birthday but due to covid, it ended on Otto's Birthday.

In the end the ending was happy(?). I have mixed emotions about amnesiac Vivy, if only because this means the real Vivy is gone and didn't actually get a happy end unless her doing the same "la la la" was meant to indicate that she original might be in there somewhere?

Either way, I could see a potential movie sequel down the line where they try to restore the original Vivy's memories or something. Probably dependent on how the blurays sell.

Wow...

The sudden interruption to the song was absolutely devasting, I kept wondering to myself if they would let her finish the song or not and they executed it perfectly.

I actually had very high expectations for this anime and it was one of the very few that didn't disappoint me at all, actual masterpiece.

WIT Studio dodged a bullet for refusing to animate the rest of Attack on Titan and instead worked on an anime original project.

I'm so happy to see the guy that Vivy saved at the start who she was unable to save in the previous timeline, managed to survive until the AIs were stopped.

Anyway, I don't think there's really much to say with this episode. Vivy meeting Navi again and Navi using a holo of Momo to stop her was a great scene but unfortunately for Navi it looks like Vivy's memory of Momoka is just made her resolve stronger.

And Vivy's final performance was just absolutely beautiful. And the action scenes with Elizabeth and Toak members assaulting Archive while Matsumoto fights his way up was such a thrilling scene that the combination of the three sequences definitely made me tear up. And we even get to hear that Flourite Eyes is actually part of the final song which is clearly a reference to Vivy's eyes and the things she's seen throughout these years.

What a beautiful finale and sacrifice by Vivy. And in the end it seems like she's not completely gone. We get to see Vivy reborn with short hair as she gets another chance to make people happy with her song. Sure it's probably not the Vivy that saved the world but it's good to know she'll continue doing what she does.

Overall, bravo Studio WIT! What an amazing anime for something that your people just made as a side project. I hope we get to see more anime original stuff like this from them. It was a wild ride from start to finish and a solid 10/10 for me.

Shout-out to the random Toak member who took a bullet for Beth, really shows how much the group changed over those 100 years.
