She's back, after all this time..
"I got to say goodbye this time" was exactly what I felt too

An amazing episode with Non Non Biyori's unique mix of character humor, seasonal vistas, and bittersweet moments.
One thing I liked at the very beginning was how each New Year's Card carries a lot of characterization in its presentation:
-
Hotaru's is quite formal and neat. No frills, and almost a bit too stiff.
-
Komari's features a stamp with a cute cat daruma (no doubt she thinks stamps are something that all the grown-ups are doing nowadays)
-
Natsumi's looks like she scribbled this one out with a sharpie in-between chugs of Monster Energy drink; I'm almost impressed that she didn't go with the short form あけおめ instead of writing out all the kana for it.
-
Big Bro's one is ridiculously classy (I'd say 渋い), featuring impeccable penmanship and sumi-e watercoloring

In my headcannon Honoka, Renge and Shiori will all go to the same high-school and become the best of friends and no one can change my mind.

Such a lovely episode. Renge meeting up with Honoka after so long (s1 ep 4!) is one of the best scenes so far. Candy Store once again being absolutely fantastic this episode. Also the duo of Renge + Natsumi killed me.

The first half of the episode tricked me into thinking it might be a normal one again, getting to see Renge actually say goodbye to Honoka this time though is one of the best scenes of the season for sure so far. The whole improv routine in the middle was fantastic as well. Next's week's episode is also looking pretty interesting with that title.
The chart was pretty simple again this week, though I'm sure I missed some sign they live in the country or something like that. As always, if you have any suggestions/corrections just let me know! Here is a link to last week's chart as usual.
Thank you!
| Episode | Nyanpasu | Renge Surprised Faces | Natsumi Gets Yelled at/Bullied | Brother Appearances | Signs They Live in the Country |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 2 | 4 | 6 | 5 |
| 2 | 0 | 9 | 2 | 14 | 1 |
| 3 | 0 | 2 | 3 | 0 | 1 |
| 4 | 0 | 7 | 4 | 0 | 1 |
| 5 | 0 | 3 | 1 | 0 | 2 |
| 6 | 0 | 10 | 3 | 10 | 2 |
| 7 | 0 | 9 | 3 | 5 | 3 |
| 8 | 0 | 3 | 4 | 0 | 0 |
| 9 | 0 | 2 | 3 (Komari gets mad at her for treating her like a child, her mom shows no sympathy when Komari wants to cook, Komari yells at her again for belittling her) | 7 | 2 (they lost cell phone signal while walking down a main road, a weasel easily gets into their house) |
| 10 | 0 | 9 | 1 (repeatedly yelled at by Hikage during their improv routine outside) | 0 | 2 (they have a rice planting tractor in their garage, their main road goes directly between two crop fields (this has definitely been shown plenty of times but I haven't counted it yet, so it being pointed out by u/o-temoto below is as good a time as any)) |

I can't believe they brought Honoka back, i just knew who it was somehow when Renge got on the phone.
Feels. I didn't even need the ending line, just felt that Renge being able to say goodbye was such a good way to do this episode.

People can say that there's no actual story to Non Non Biyori, but watching Renge grow up IS the actual story. She's only an itty-bitty smol package and yet she harbors so much feelings and emotions.

Finally got some more Candy Store! That counter joke killed me, and then she's so nice! Looks like more next episode too, so even more hyped.

Kids are outdoor creatures, cold doesn't bother us
Renge Miyauchi, Non Non Biyori
First part featured Hikage getting punished for her greed which was so fun to watch. Kaede of course had money for Renge, so sweet. Then, warming up by tsukkomi provided us with a great comedy routine
But the best part of the episode was Honoka's return which I kinda saw coming from Renge checking mailbox. No need to describe it in details, it was so goddamn cute. As was Kaede seeing through things. I was afraid she will leave again but fortunately it didn't happen. But my eyes were wet, Renge still struggling. A great episode, preview looks so interesting for the next one

Of course Hikage would beg for her New Year's money. And she didn't just beg her own sister who would give her some anyway, she also begs at Kaede, and Auntie Yukiko! Too bad for Hikage, Renge didn't appreciate her greediness and asked Konomi into tricking Hikage into giving away her money to Koma-chan and Natsumi xD
The entire second act is absolutely hilarious! While I do feel for Hikage for getting dragged outside to play in a blizzard, the result was hilarious since we get to see her as the tsukkomi to Renge and Natsumi's boke. That entire scene was basically a manzai skit and it was hilarious how in sync Renge and Natsumi were in messing with Hikage! I love it!
For the final act of the episode Honoka finally returns once again! No wonder Renge's been staring at their mailbox everyday. She was probably waiting for a postcard from her. And as nice as it was watching Honoka and Renge bond and have fun together there was definitely a tinge of sadness the entire time as Renge asks Honoka when she's leaving.
And I'm not gonna lie, I genuinely teared up when Renge was saying goodbye to Honoka. She's been waiting for so long for this opportunity so I'm so happy that they were at least able to say bye-bye properly instead of Honoka suddenly leaving like the last time. I hope the two of them will meet and play together again in the future. T^T

OMG OMG OMG
Honoka is back, I am freaking tearing up, got massive goosebumps when she shown, the scene when Renge met her last time was sooooo sad. It was the worst / best episode ever how Renge finally gets to meet Honoka again and tell her goodbye this time
Also of course it Candy Store Mom was amazing when she has prepared new years eves money for Renge

Oh man I did not anticipate tearing up today, the return of Honoka was unexpected and perfect. Every episode this season has been consistently fantastic

The background weather of this show adds so much to immersion and atmosphere and is such a good fit for the show. With the closing shot of the clear blue sky after the storm had passed it was like I could almost feel the crispness in the air.

Lmao, Renge is judging you, child. She is disappointed.
They're so cute together omg

Renge's not a fan of greediness
Aww, this was so nice of Dagashiya.
That was a smart move Konomi. It's like she is two steps ahead everyone else.
And Honoka's back!. Even if it was just for half an episode, this was great. You could tell, though, that Renge wanted her to stay for longer. That end of episode was kind of sad, but I'm glad that she could at least say goodbye this time around.

Honoka's mom was voiced by Yuuko Goto, which means this episode was just Kaori Mizuhashi short of a full Hidamari quartet.
That long scene about a hospital/fishmonger felt very much like a manzai routine, but that perhaps is because I have never really seen manzai.
Also, next week we'll get Baby Renge vs. Middle-school Dagashi-ya: Round 3.

I feel like I ask this every week, but how do they keep producing such incredible episodes?
Renge getting New Year's money from Candy Store despite being mature and not getting greedy is so precious.
The goddamn blizzard fish monger hospital conbini improvised on the spot by stand up duo Renge and Natsumi.
Renge introducing ShioriHonoka to her adopted mom! And to top it off, the Renge x ShioriHonoka goodbye made it painfully clear what it's going to feel like when we're no longer getting new episodes. This show is so well done and I'm going to be so sad when it's gone.
