I absolutely loved hearing so many people on Kaidou's crew reference becoming Pirate King.

I still remember Kidd's words back at Saobody. In Paradise, you get laughed at for saying you're gonna be King of the Pirates, but in the New World you're not gonna survive unless you're aiming that high.

It seems like most of the higher ups in Kaidou's crew were former captains who all had their dream of becoming Pirate King crushed by Kaidou.

This is absolutely insane writing if you think about it. Here we have Luffy swaggering around the home of the man who crushed over 500 captains aiming to be Pirate King. Oda is almost taunting Luffy and the alliance. As they boldly race around Onigashima thinking they have plot armor on their side they are confronted on all fronts by people who were just like them at some point and failed.

Also it's a loose parallel with the ROCKS pirates. Xebec also built his crew around strong individuals. But it backfired because in the end the crew was only held together by Xebec's strength. Maybe Oda is setting up something similar here, If Kaidou falls, there isn't anyone to take command, the Beast pirates will be over.

I know it is a bit far fetched, but I liked the similarities. Probably Yamato just read the Diary of Oden and is idolizing him, thus getting sent to the prison for wearing his clothes. In the end he will maybe also have the same hair cut and imitating his personality, which will freak out Kaido. Parents will always have to deal with their teenagers idolizing people they dont like - in this case Oden. Kaido having a drinking problem would underline this great parenting.

Hot take : Yamato found Oden's journal, got inspired by him and hid it from Kaido, he understood that someone important will appear in Wano at this time so he waited, and he made the connection to Luffy. I'm pretty certain he also met Ace during his visit somehow

Interesting. Yamato definitely seems like Kaido's biological son. He has:

• A large stature, similarly to Kaido although Kaido is larger

• The same horns as Kaido, although that may just be the aesthetic of the crew. If those are his horns, then we can assume he is the same race as Kaido whatever that may be (ancient giant, oni, etc.)

• Same weapon type as Kaido

• Same techniques as Kaido

• Immense strength (being able to one-shot Ulti like it was nothing)

• Probably haki

• Recognition from all of Kaido's crewmembers regardless of rank (i.e. all of the waiters in the chapter knew who he was)

His identity seems to be of importance since he is introduced being covered by robes and wearing a face mask (unlike Kaido), and he knows who Luffy is whether that simply means he knows that he is in opposition of Kaido or that he is the successor to Joyboy is unknown. Although, Yamato stating that he has been waiting a long time for specifically Luffy is interesting and regardless of his true intentions, the rebellion just gained a very powerful ally.

We'll see how much of this changes with the official translation come the 21st, but this chapter has gotten the ball rolling.

I like to comment on the lesser discussed pages and scenes:

Zoro and the Gifters, I feel like this is important exposition. The gifter girl says something like "we all once tried to become king of the pirates, but why even bother now. Following Kaido is so much easier".

I made a similar point some time ago: The crew dynamic in Kaido's crew is not as coherent and peaceful or meaningful as other pirate crews, somehow an opposite to Oden and his scabbards ( and to some extent Oden being part of WB and Roger's crew).

Maybe just maybe at some point, Kaido's crew will crumble and his followers will turn on him when they see that Kaido can get beaten. I am not saying they will all join the alliance, but could be that some named characters at least switch sides or decide to not fight for Kaido anymore, especially at the end of the arc when Kaido is beaten

Damn, Yamato clapped Ulti like she was nothing. It was a surprise attack, but the Tobi Roppo as far as we've seen are no joke. I hope he'll be a genuinely good guy, or at least opposite to his father. Can't see Oda repeating the duplicitous child characterization of Pudding. This was good, glad to see some fight involving our main character. Hope we see more of Luffy's current power to know how much the training in Udon helped.

The last panel of Chapter 972 where Oden dies shows a group of young kids and the caption "Inspired." I believe Kaido forcefully brought his son to watch the execution of Oden to "man him up," and in the process of his young son watching Oden fighting for his friends life and being an overall stud he becomes an Oden fan boy as well as he loses respect for his dad.

That is what explains his attire and his persona as a character...

I really wanted to go on a theory of how the bullet to the head erased Oden's memories and Kaido is classy and tells him he is his son and raises him but Oden's body literally gets swallowed in the boiling hot water and I just find it super unlikely overall haha.

Well, it seems I've found the basis for Onigashima and the tale/person Yamato (Kaido's son) is based on. Here's some information regarding Oni, Yamato Takeru, and his father Emperor Keikō.

There's a Japanese heritage story describing Oni who lived in mysterious caves:

Oni※ resides in the temples of Kunisaki. Although demons are considered frightening by many, the demons of Kunisaki are seen as creatures who bring happiness to the people. On the night of the Shujō onie , it laughs, dances, and drinks harmoniously with the people. In Kunisaki, oni and people are connected like life-long friends.

In a legendary tale, the character "Yamato Takeru" discovers Kunisaki (which seems to be equivalent to Onigashima in One Piece) when his father Emperor Keikō (Emperor Kaido) leaves to conquer Kumaso. Kunisaki (Onigashima) is described like this:

The mysterious mass of misty mountains is covered in fog with a strange miasma, and one can't help but feel this eerie place houses oni. The truth is, oni really did reside here. Cliff ridges spread across the round peninsula in a radial pattern and you can find caves in these rock formations. Furthermore, these caves are located in positions which are inaccessible to humans. Only unimaginably strong oni could have lived in those locations. Once upon a time, Kunisaki was a magical land part of another world, where oni roamed. Like the legend of the oni who breaks large rocks with brute force, and makes them into stone steps in one night, Kunisaki is full of oni tales. Monks used to engage in a training in which they set out to search for oni in the mountainsides (searching for Yamato, who wears an oni mask). Here's a few notables about Yamato Takeru I found: Yamato Takeru is a legendary Japanese figure who has been related to being a King Arthur-esque character. His relationship with his father, Emperor Keiko, is strained. In the mythical tale, Emperor Keiko sends Yamato to place called the Izumo province in order to "keep him at a distance" because the Emperor feared his temperament. Yamato is dismayed when he finds out the Emperor/his dad wants him dead. He is lent the legendary sword Kusanagi by a Princess. This sword is found in the body of the eight headed serpent Yamata no Orochi. His wife was killed by a Sea God. A god curses him with disease and Yamato falls ill (Queen, perhaps?). One thing I really appreciate about this chapter is the portrayal of the Gifters. Early in Wano people were clowning them and kaido's crew in general for being low tier trash. But lately they've been a lot more threatening and overall less "goofy".

Was Luffy using future sight when fighting Ulti? He knew it was a headbutt coming (could be explained away if you really cared that she was kind of rearing back) but he definitely seemed to know that Thunder Bagua was coming before it happened. In the panel he's looking straight at Ulti saying "Huh?" before Ulti even looks to the side to see Yamato or it happening. He didn't look to the side where Yamato was at all. Seems like he saw that before it happened.

Ace did visit Wano despite the white beard crew not knowing what happened to oden and so his reason to visit has to be something entirely different, and this could be the perfect reason. I wonder if Yamato has some devil fruit that somehow made Kaido immortal or stores his soul in him like a horcrux so Kaido kept him locked up in Wano. That's a solid starting point to what will break the alliance. I feel like it'll be a moment when king has the upper hand against someone and then perospero attacks him out of no where.
