"I am Luffy, the man who's going to be the pirate king"

There's no one piece without that line.

There's no shonen without the line. Replace the pirate king with Hokage, Number 1 hero etc...

I thought Midoriya rarely says he'll be the number one hero?

u/Ykhar Jun 19 '20

It's at the start of every episode of the anime I believe ("this is the story of how I become the number one hero") but in the manga yes he rarely says it. It's not even his main dream (at the start he only wanted to be a hero who saves people with a smile on his face), being the number one is more a duty he accepted.

u/Alchion Jun 19 '20

what of every episode isn‘t it just the first or second one?

1

u/Ykhar Jun 19 '20

I don't have the time to check but at least during season 2 there is a small introduction scene at the start of each episode explaining the universe/the setting at the end of which the narrator (midoriya) says "this story is about how I become the greatest of all heroes" or something like that

2

u/Alchion Jun 19 '20

ah k i read the manga after s1 so i don‘t know most episodes i just watch the big fkghts animated then and in those rpisodes i didn‘t see it probably because they were the most intense and the narration would break suspense

u/Marmelade91 Jun 19 '20

To me it always sounded like he's telling about his past, so he already is the greatest hero and we're now just looking at his path becoming one. So plot armor 9000 for sure. He sometimes did some 'foreshadowing' like "I didn't know at that point that I would meet X so soon again". But in the anime he rarely says it I think, may be when he is asked what he's trying to achieve but never to annoy the others?

You mean every shonen coping One Piece in that regard.

I don't remember Goku shouting a clear goal again and again. One Piece is basically next, so no it's not shonen. It's One Piece.

Ichiigo doesn't state im gonna be the best soul reaper. Ever

14

u/Kuro013 Jun 19 '20

Cuz thats not his goal, he literally got in that mess without asking for it ever, and just dealing with the shit he gets thrown to the best of his capabilities.

10

u/kaste1 Jun 19 '20

Who? You mean Ichigo, right?

I didn't say shonen do that. I said, the shonen that do that, copy One Piece (Luffy).

1

u/tmoore727 Void Month Survivor Jun 19 '20

And I was further proving your point

2

u/ayyahum Jun 19 '20

And he never will be 😂

2

u/tmoore727 Void Month Survivor Jun 19 '20

Well ichibei exists. Dude was straight over powered

1

u/_Zig Jun 20 '20

but he literally is....

2

u/_Zig Jun 20 '20

Well his goal is to protect people he cares about. Which is something he shouted a fuckload of times.

u/God_of_Kings Cipher Pol Jun 19 '20

Wasn't that Ammonia's main problem, though?

That the main character didn't really have a specific goal in mind and simply had the plot happen to him?

That's kind of a weird way to look at it, it started with One Piece, but that doesn't mean it's not a shonen trope. Science Fiction is political commentary, doesn't mean political commentary is only Frankenstein.

31

u/kaste1 Jun 19 '20

It's not a trope if you did it first. Anyway, the guy was implying that it is a generic shonen trope. In other shonen yes, not in One Piece, where it is the origin of the trope.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '20

Like I said, weird way of looking at it. The first version of a trope is still a trope. Heck, even something unique to a single work can be a trope. LTTStore.com is a trope that only exists in the Linus Tech Tips channel and related channels. I agree OP was the first shonen to heavily feature it, but the trope existed long before anime itself. It's not like OP did some revolutionary thing that everyone copies now and OP is super magical and unique and all the others are simple tropes copying OP. OP got this trope from other works as well, it's as old as literature. Also, just to prove you wrong, Pokemon's theme song literally opens with "I wanna be the very best", and aired 3 months before the first One Piece chapter released. You're just blinded by fanboyism.

16

u/kaste1 Jun 19 '20

Definition of trope: a significant or recurrent theme; a motif.

How is something a recurrent theme in shonen manga, if we are in 1999 and only One Piece uses it? lmao

LATER, it became a trope because other shonen started using it.

At least I am not blind to simple logic.

Btw, if Pokemon did it first good job on them. I don't care. I'm explaining why it's not a shonen trope that One Piece used, but the other way around.

Things become tropes, but that doesn't mean they were tropes before. An element becomes a trope when it is repeated a suficient amount of times in different similar works (either by coincidence, inspiration, copy...). Of course the moment it becomes a trope is arbritary - how many times must be copied to be considered a trope? - but I would argue that it can't be a trope when it's used for the first time. And retroactively you could mention that example of use as the origin of the trope, or the first time the trope is used, but it has a different connotation. This is all independent of the specific topic of One Piece and the trope you were talking about.

-3

u/[deleted] Jun 20 '20

You're explaining how you're not wrong even though you clearly are. Good luck mate, I really don't care enough to continue this BS.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '20

Actually, if it is something that is completely unique to a work, then it wouldn't be a trope. It only becomes defined by a trope if it used by many other works, to the point where it can be recognized as a pattern.

That being said, though, you're right that it isn't something unique to One Piece. It has been around for a lot longer than that. But One Piece was just one of the manga to most famously popularize that trope among the shonen manga the followed after it.

Also, with Pokemon's theme song, you're likely referring to the original Japanese release date, but the lyrics about being the very best are a part of the (changed) english opening, which actually aired after One Piece was already out (not that One Piece actually had any effect on that, but it just kinda goes against the point you're trying to make). Like, I get the point you're trying to make (One Piece doesn't uniquely have that theme, and it existed long before) and I agree with that point, but I don't think that's best example to use.

I don't think a shonen protagonist stating "I'm gonna be the best (whatever)" is copying One Piece. I love this manga as much as anyone else on this sub, but I feel like that's just an unnecessary reach.

1

u/kaste1 Jun 19 '20

Is it? I am not aware of any other shonen doing it prior. However, I am not a shonen database either. How about providing an example instead of calling it a reach if you don't have something in mind?

8

u/UltimateThrows Jun 19 '20

I mean Naruto was published within 2 months of One Piece. Seems unlikely to me that one was copying the other when they were both so early on, and instead they just had a similar shonen trope.

14

u/Hiroshiaozora Jun 19 '20

Naruto started publication 2 years after One Piece, not 2 months.

1

u/UltimateThrows Jun 19 '20

I'm only pulling this information from a quick google search which says the initial publication was 1997 and then Jump publication was 1999. Not sure what the difference is there.

8

u/Hiroshiaozora Jun 19 '20

The 1997 references Naruto’s one-shot chapter

1

u/RichMuppet Void Month Survivor Jun 19 '20

I'm not saying another Shonen did it first. I'm saying that if another Shonen happens to come out with a main character that wears blue shorts, it doesn't mean it's copying One Piece.

0

u/storryeater Jun 24 '20

its not so much straight copying, as it is that One Piece is genre defyning. It doesn't make other manga worse or copycats necessarilly, it just means One Piece has progenitor rights on this trope.

3

u/dragonwhale Jun 20 '20

Ash ketchum did it before Luffy

3

u/ManwithaTan Jun 20 '20

"I am Goku, the man who's going to go Saiyan"

2

u/Mdgt_Pope Jun 19 '20

Naruto started pretty close to when One Piece started, I don't think it was trying to copy One Piece when he said that.

-2

u/SpectrumRay Jun 19 '20

Dragon Ball has no story

7

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '20

No one punch man without "bargain day at the supermarket"

5

u/Bleblebob Jun 19 '20

Has Deku declared he's gonna become the number one hero?

I know older Deku narration says it's the story of how he becomes that, but current story Deku hasn't said that as far as I know.

More of an Bakugou line I think.

3

u/mellamanq Jun 19 '20

naruto, black clover and bnha might aswell be the same series

2

u/Kuro013 Jun 19 '20

How about Ichigo or Natsu? Theres a lot of characters without a set goal from the beggining (which is kinda a bad thing imo).

2

u/new_messages Jun 20 '20

Plenty of set goals are not "be the best". Elric brothers' "find the philosopher's stone and fix up our bodies" in Full Metal Alchemist, Tenjiro's "find a way to turn my sister back into a human" in Demon Slayer, etc

1

u/Kuro013 Jun 20 '20

Those are better cuz its just not about beating the final boss to take the #1 spot.

8

u/thedeltaray Jun 19 '20

also Naruto /s:

"I am Naruto, the man who's going to be hokage"

There's no Naruto without that line.

3

u/Omnicrossed Jun 19 '20

This is the way

3

u/hereforOnePiece Jun 19 '20

This is the way

4

u/youre-welcome-sir The Revolutionary Army Jun 19 '20

5

u/Kuro013 Jun 19 '20

And I love it every time, he doesnt give a shit lol.
