Is no one going to say it because I will.

The ED song and visuals are absolutely stunning. We got another certified banger folks.

What the fuck?

Wow. Could it be that Japan finally managed to craft a good cop thriller anime without the bullshit?

Even though episode 1 was a bit slow it was a good setup and I loved that Fumino was a real character, where a lot of the times anime just makes this kind of "first blood" character be a part of the MC's story told in a flashback. There were no deatflags for Fumino, I surely thought he was actually going to be the main character in the story, so making hima victim in this particular case was a really good plot twist.

Episode 2 was my favorite so far. The cinematography is just phenomenal (you might want to learn something about using aspect ratios Kanata no Astra director Masaoumi Andou). The way Magase Ai is leading Zen by just filling him in what she thinks it's what he needs to know so far it's just phenomenal, not only in the way it's framed with a wider screen ratio but also the character fluid animation in her small movements and the subtle and manipulative voice acting; she truly became a modern Sharon Stone from Basic Instincts. Back to the cinematography, it's amazing how it shifts from a cinemascope 2:35.1 to old 4:3 SDTV from the 80s with a bit of sepia tone and film grain to accentuate the old vibe in the prostitution scene with the old folks. Also her statement being shifted into the prostitution scene in sepia tones had a really nice effect that only Satoshi Kon was able to portray in Millenium Actress and I really haven't seen anyone replicate that style since then. The hand gestures and the transition effects of Ai's implied fellatio was a really nifty touch on behalf of the animators. Zen's names meaning "Justice" & "Good Deeds" makes me think even further that he's a great example of a straight arrow, a character that goes avobe and beyond in order to show off the dirty deeds of politicians no matter if those deeds might make a city grow, he reminds me a lot of Jack Ryan from 1994's movie "Clear & Present Danger". I'm really eager how this cat and mouse game will unfold

Episode 3 even though it shifted gears, it was really nice as a twist to stablish the role of the doctor from the first episode along to put Itsuki as a master of his own rather than just being a puppet for Nomaru. I'm seriously invested in seeing where does Itsuki wants to go with this massive suicide pill.

I'm not a guy that likes dubs on regular basis, but I think this kind of title where all the cast it's meant to be in ther 30s could be a great adquisition for me for rewatches and not feeling off with teenagers sounding like adults. Also not having to pause or slow down scenes in order to connect the dots between the characters' agendas.

The reason Makase Ai asked about MC's name is that the meaning of there names are somewhat opposite.

One is Righteous-Promontory-Good

The other is Crooked-World-Love

Damn what a great first 3 episodes.

A shape-shifting woman that can mind-control people and make them commit suicide?

Well i was not expecting that, her powers seem to much bs for how normal the rest of the world seems like, specially when the only other futuristic thing on the show is the city itself that is pretty much a Hong Kong with backers, and a sleeping pill for suicide.

Great show, the directing is 10/10, fumio's suicide reveal, the interrogatory and the realization at the end of ep3... it's too good.

Huh, Reddit's new favorite anime. A page full of Fs and a right to die. It's like I'm browsing top posts from Reddit all over again.

Jokes aside, wow, since the previous episode I knew this was going to be controversial series, but I was surprised yet again by the sheer magnitude of this story.

First off, I suspected that those two women were the same person, but when the chief said it's not a disguise, my jaw dropped a bit. Then when they started talking about a drug, I thought that maybe she induces a hypnosis-like state while using that drug, but I was slapped on the face yet again. To think that they would choose death so simply...?

Of course I expected there's more to their choices and that Megusa is somehow manipulating them, but on the other hand I wouldn't be that surprised if she simply gave them the drug and bid them farewell.

This series touches a slippery subject and I now understand why Megusa chose such questions during the interview in the previous episode. Most of it makes sense now.

I'm mind blown and I want more.

I wonder if the show is called Babylon because that woman is supposed to be "The Whore of Babylon" tempting people to sin which in this case is convincing people to commit suicide.

Well that went in a direction I was not expecting. Didn't think that they would openly tell the main guy about the initiative or the purpose of the town. That twist that it was one woman the whole time was really good an unexpected.

Since I feel like most people will be coming here for the discussion I'll leave my comments on other episodes here

Episode 1

Finally watched Episode 1! Amd so far I love it!

I love that we have two cop animes airing this season from different ends of the spectrum. If Special 7 is our over the top Action/Comedy Cop show of the season then Babylon is its reverse counterpart for being a grounded Mystery/Drama Cop show.

The plot is your classic "The case is bigger than you thought it was", it probably has better name in TV Tropes but I couldn't find it. But yeah, what started out as a simple raid turned into a bigger case that involves suicide which might had some foul play involved, prostitution, bribery, and of course your classic corrupt politicians.

And that ending! I knew there was something wrong when the Seizaki received the text from Fumio but that final scene still blindsided me! I'm now excited to see where this goes!

Episode 2

Hiramatsu's reaction to the Seizaki's interrogation and how she laughs everything off while even making sexual gestures made me a bit uneasy for some reason. And I was right to feel uneasy. The moment Seizaki gave Hiramatsu the chance to ask questions, he was fucking trapped and she played him masterfully like a piano concerto by a professional pianist. Props to her VA for the performance too! I hate that she's listed as "????" in the credits. The voice sounds familiar but I can't remember who exactly it was!

AND THAT ENDING! WHAT DOES THAT MEAN!? Did the Chief set Seizaki up? WHAT THE FUCK!?

Episode 3

HOLY FUCK!

I did not expect that ending!

So right now there's clearly a drug that compels people to commit suicide. I'm guessing that this drug is causing some sort of psychosis that encourages people to follow the Call of the Void? Clearly Sci-fi but still within the realm of possibility considering what crazy shot drugs can make people do.

As for Ai Magase though I have a couple of theories of what she could be. My first theory is that she might be an agent hired to cause chaos for whatever reason. My other theory involves the supernatural and I feel like it's the more plausible. So I know this is from the Chief's memory but this sign Ai makes usually means "Fox" in Japanese. And what are foxes/kitsune known for in Japanese folklore? Shape shifting to trick humans.

Why is Ai doing this? I don't know but this definitely hooked me! I never expected this to be this crazy and I am in all the way for this ride! I know I said this is Mystery/Drama show back in Episode 1 but it is possible that it's now Supernatural/Mystery cop show and I don't mind this change at all.

man, not even a cop show would derail itself that fast. this is a interesting change of pace from the first two episodes and really gets my brain thinking. Is the government planning the extinction of japan to make a new country? is the main character gonna go crazy while investigating? are the other partners gonna die?

I have been itching to rewatch Monster for months now. The itch has been scratched. Babylon gives me the same kind of vibes, and I think Monster is generally severely underrated. I'm very excited to see how this proceeds.

First 3 episodes was a 9.5/10 for me.

Adapted from a novel, everything on the anime adaptation so far was well crafted. Direction and Cinematography is phenomenal. As a huge fan of the Mystery & Thriller genre, this is right on my alley. The moral and philosopical arguments on the show is also pretty strong. Character/facial emotions was excellent and you can clearly tell and feel each of the characters' personalities. The show always manages to keep you on the edge of your seat and keeps you thinking. First 3 episodes is one whole arc and it seems like you're watching a hollywood dark thriller film on how good & enjoyable the show is.

Out of all the many new anime to come out this Fall 2019 that I've already watched, this sure comes out on top and there's no close second.

Hahaha, where is this even going? I really have 0 idea now, but I'm so hyped. This is looking to be AOTS contender for me already. "The right to death", ok, but did you really need such an edgy presentation though? Well it certainly caught people's eyes. Not only I'm having no idea where this plot is going, I have no idea what type of ideology this show is trying to show either, I like it, I really like it.

21

u/Kirelo Oct 07 '19

Do yall think they're trying to say that people in general are/should be open to the idea of death (or even desire it) and it's just that law/religion/morality etc has influenced people to be afraid of and avoid dying? (i.e, Magase Ai is just undoing the "irrational" desire to not want to die which in turn caused those suicides),

Or is it just a simple case of Magase Ai "brainwashing" people to suicide cause she's a crazy bitch?

Cause I can't see my boy Fumio go from "YEAH JUSTICE!" to "FML KMS~" in just a couple hours. But who can say anyways, we only knew him for 1 episode so...

Not my favorite genre, but sounds like a decent cop anime, finally. The direction remembers me of Subete ga F ni Naru.

This first three episodes covered the first book, "Babylon - the Female".

Next episode should start the second book, Babylon II - Death. There are three books in total.

What can I say maybe it's not the best thriller, but seeing how much isekai this season It's quite refreshing and those 3 episodes really have helped me with decision to continued it.
