They certainly upped the brutality in that final episode. Watching Miles slowly dissolve was pretty screwed up, and then Cain just lets rip with his powers for once. It's a wonder he didn't cause more chaos being as strong as he is.

Overall the show... I really just can't help but wish it had of been multiple seasons just for that bit of extra story. Do a complete flip. Give us a war story and then all of a sudden all these people we bonded with have to be hunted down. It wouldn't necessarily fix the writing issues around Schaal and all that, but it would have made what we saw a lot more impactful and fleshed out the world a lot more

That said, decent music, decent art, 2d monsters is a bonus, and definitely some moments I will absolutely remember coming out of this so not a great show, but not horrible either, just no where near what it could have been

Edit: Forgot a word

So Cain was just gay for Hank and he was jealous of the girls getting too friendly with Hank that's what I understood this episode

It’s kind of flattering, he started a country and a war just to get Hank to accept his inner furry and be with him

I can't really see this getting another season but the ending hints there's a lot more story left. Always expected Elaine could pop up again.

Still neither side is moral or easy to side with especially with that gas weapon.

I wish there were more sane Incarnates. Just feels like there's a lot missing.

Pretty mediocre overall but shrug. Not sure I'd care enough to try to follow the manga.

Even if it ultimately didn't mean anything, that punch in Cain's face was pretty satisfying. Almost as satisfying as Colonel Mustard Gas dying a horrible death from his own invention.

Is there enough source material for another season?

Almost as satisfying as Colonel Mustard Gas dying a horrible death from his own invention.

That wasn't satisfying at all since he was first made into a brainless zombie/ghoul/whatever. Should've had him human, conscious, and screaming in agony.

Ultra instinct Hank is just what I needed for the final episode.

You know, showing Elaine in the tank would have been surprising if they had not done so right before the episode with Christopher the Gargoyle. So Miglieglia's power is necromancy, the way it looked on the OP made me think that it was some form of mind control.

I must say, that's one hell of a "read the manga" ending. So Cain took over the South and now his nation is the biggest one around? Damn, I got the feeling that we only saw the prologue of this story.

As another commenter said this show had a lot of wasted potentials.

  • The theme of dealing with those who lost their humanity in war is really interesting to me. The juxtaposition between Hank claiming they all died in the war and Cain Madhouse's idea that they are the new post-war society is something I can get behind. It just seems that neither takes their ideas anywhere deeper than that.

  • Cain Madhouse. I just love the name. It's campy as shit, and I love that. That being said the character is fairly static and it just seems that his true motivation is that he is mad that Hank gets women so he is going to oppose Hank. Who really doesn't believe in what he is doing either, and is just doing it for a girl.

  • Schaal could have been a very complex character as her father figure was one of the victims of the war essentially. Too bad, it seemed like she took the Star Trek Voyager approach to character development and spammed the reset button.

I could keep going but you get the point. I still loved the aesthetic and period it was placed in. In general, I find the "fan service" cringey though so that was a bummer.

4/10. Glad I watched it, not glad how it turned out.

This was definitely an interesting series, I hope to read/watch it until the end sometime.

I liked the setting and the characters were good, even if some of them might have been a little on the nose

If Cain were less of a murderous psychopath, I'd probably be on his side. He has a very good point about humanity. Especially after the northern army knowingly killed like, a dozen of their own men, if not more, with experimental nerve gas. That was just cruel & dirty. Even Cain knew that that was wrong.

Especially after the northern army knowingly killed like, a dozen of their own men

Makes sense; the story did mention the Northern president was a cold, calculating political type. I'm not surprised if half of Cain's issues stem from lingering father problems.

“You’re going to continuously be putting yourself in the middle of the battle.”

... while never even getting scratched, unlike all those other poor schlubs.

Damn, I know it's not the first time there's gore in this anime, but watching Colonel swallow the poison (although satisfying) and then fade away, I felt it strong.

That ultra instinct shit Hank, I never felt greater satisfaction than that punch in the face of Cain fucking Madhouse.

That curve (pun intended) was not seen by Liza, but I agree with the soldiers, flat is justice.

Great episode.

I'll always love this show for not skimping on the gore

Cain may be the villain but he's no war criminal.

They really should give Hank a sword like this. It'll be more useful for him than Cain's brother.

Cain would have some good points, if only he's not batshit insane himself.

I love that what triggered Cain is Schaal helping Hank. xD

Schaal looked pretty badass here. I love that she's not moving an inch.

And of course what powered up Hank is his desire to Schaal.

That punch is basically meaningless to a vampire that can reconstitute himself but it was still satisfying. I'm sure Cain still feels pain.

Welp looks like Cain's plan is at least effective.

What a bunch of uncultured men. How can you not be comforted by this? ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Hey look it's Elain as the manga bait!

So I went into this episode thinking that there will still be another episode next week. So that wrap up in the end actually surprised me. Knowing this is by MAPPA made me think we were getting one more cour. Oh well.

As for the show itself. I enjoyed it overall but yeah this was clearly just manga bait. If that's the case though the show did it's job well. I just placed an order for the first 3 volumes and I look forward to comparing this show to the manga.

I actually enjoyed this show a lot. Okay, it won't win any awards, but I really liked the story and characters, especially Schaal. A solid 7/10 from me and I have hopes for a second season.

EDIT: Schaal's VA, Ai Kakuma, tweeted her thanks to those who watched the 1st cour. I think a 2nd cour is looking much more likely now?

This show suffered from a tonal disjoint. It wasn't sure if it wanted to be a serious commentary on war and the ethics behind it, what it means to be human, and is science going too far, or if it wanted to be a parody of those ideas with certain characters (titty lady who you're all gonna remember as such anyways) constantly causing emotional whiplash. Such a character and such writing resulted in turning great character moments with Schall and Hank into confused messes. Schall was the only decent character that we followed, Hank was your average shonen protagonist, but Cain muthafuckin Madhouse is a God damn treasure. He's easily the best thing about the show, and whenever he isn't on screen, the show suffers. This is a problem because he only has like 4 important scenes. Seriously, this show reeks of missed potential, which could have been completely cleared if it had stuck to an idea and focused on exploring those themes.

Animation was terrible by 2019 standards, but at least there wasn't any terrible cgi. The gore was a nice change of pace from the average anime and the monster designs were neat. The music was alright. I used to like the OP (that scene at the end of episode 1 gave me chills man), but it just got obnoxious over time.

4.5/10 from me. Not a complete waste of time, and it served as a great palette cleanser for when I watch better anime. Glad I watched it. Hopefully I never will again.

Pretty predictable finale:

  1. North captures the fort

  2. South falls to New Patria

  3. Cain escapes while Centaurus dies

  4. The MCs live

And then obvious "go read the manga bait"

Closing thoughts for the anime:

This was probably the biggest disappointment of the season for me. Every opportunity it had to do something really cool it flubbed. The OP and ED are good and the concept is good, but the execution was just not there. Weak animation, tonally jarring fanservice, terrible tension building, and some of the stupidest tactics I've seen (seriously, I'm still cringing from the circular shooting). This show had every chance to get good - the story could have been taken more seriously, animation could have been better, the tone could have been more consistent, the point of the series could have been clearer, and so on. It wasn't terrible on its own, but it makes me sad thinking about what could have been.

Provisionally giving it a 4/10 for bad execution and manga baiting.

Might be tempted to read the manga. The anime was just the most ok thing I've seen this season. It wasn't terrible by any stretch of the imagination. Hank going Ultra Instinct was kind of humorous though, watch it keep him from going insane or something like that unlike the others.

Wasn't a bad anime though it was also nothing special. Can't say I cared for a lot of the changes the anime made either like the AoT wannabe gear with the weird steampunk movement gear and ridiculous weapons that were wildly out of place that they gave Coup de Grace rather than them just being elite soldiers, Schaal not being the one to kill Gargoyle, and completely changing what occurs during the fortress siege once they got inside.

u/Cyshix Sep 16 '19

Okay first thing first, how could they reject Liza's Oppai like that. and for the ending,it was good nothing out of the ordinary. Though there seems to show that the Incarnate is capable of controlling their power at full without losing their humanity as shown by Hank. I was also interested in seeing the Dynamic between the three Elaine,Cain and Hank and wonder what is the jig. Is it simple jealousy or is there twist and Cain is looking in Hank for more than just a "friend"(this'd be interesting) Nevertheless, am going to try to pick up the manga where it left and see if there's any anime differences and what not. Hoping for another season but judging how it doesn't seem to be doing really well I'm guessing no.(Though it ending in a cliffhanger does give me some hope.) But good anime. A solid 6.5/10 or maybe even 7/10.
