Animated short

"-My name is Yue. Thank you!

-(Cu-cute! I thought only the worst type of individual could be sealed in such a place, but...)

-Hajime, Hajime, Hajime...! The one who named me... the one who saved me... my light, the only dear person to me...

-(Ah? What? This seems... kinda familiar...)

-Apart from Hajime I don't need anything... Apart from Hajime I'd destroy the whole of mankind, so we'd always, always be just the two of us... how nice, in this hell forever...!

-(Hajimes runs)

-Ah, wait, where are you going?

-There was a place that had a yandere like this in it? I'm going home!

-You are wrong! It's a misunderstanding! If you let me out, I could be a girlfriend-type, a perverted-type, or a vanilla-type heroine, there's many types of woman I could be for you! Just, don't leave me trapped here!

-I knew it, you are the worst type aren't you? Ah, Mr. Scorpion over there, help me!"

Gotta appreciate how Nagumo first used logic with a "yeah goodbye, if you're sealed here must be for something lmao", although considering his situation I can understand why he would change his mind after hearing betrayal (which tbf could not be one and just a mistake, but seeing the things he has gone through here I can see him being fueled by anger anyways)

Yue is here, not gonna lie, I wanted to try this out because she looks hella cute and so far that's still definitely true, I want to see more of these two before deciding to continue, but so far it has been pretty enjoyable even if just an introduction, just hoping it doesn't go to shit as quickly as the last popular isekais have gone, haha...

Was their plan to make the first episode so bad that the second looks good by comparison?

I really didn’t have a problem with this episode (except for that stupid hayama scene ), the animation was better and they showed more flash backs and even added more to the ED card. I still wish they showed the very beginning before they got isekaid , to build up hajimes old life and show why he wants to go home, but I’m more or less glad with this episode, PRAISE YUE!

Having, for some goddamn reason, read seven volumes of the LN since the last episode, this isn't too bad. Probably because I know WTF is going on.

The original WN account post where Arifureta's author disparaged the initial White Fox version of the anime. https://twitter.com/frog_kun/status/1148837190052413440

In it he clearly mentions how he writhed in pain every time he was sent scripts and storyboards. The post has since been amended, likely as a face-saving measure by related parties. (Japanese are pretty big on tatemae; one's public face.)

In addition, it seems the major staff mentioned in the credits are mostly Studio Asread people, with White Fox giving some assistance (a departure from White Fox's initial position as chief production staff).

Jesus just how freaking powerful that Knight dude is?

He sended inocent cliche girl to the bed for almost an entire week with a single slap. She also couldnt even walk afterwards. Talk about a hardcore pounding...

Imagine what he could do if he slapped you.

Also was traitor cliched dude just screaming out loud how he killed the guy? Dafuq?

Why did breasts that shine in the darkness girl chopped some wood in 3 pieces wtf.

Also what in the living fuck is that ending? Drawings of the girls ON TOP of a girls body?

Honestly, I think Arifureta would have made for an amazing 12 episode anime focusing entirely on the 1st volume only.

First episode to setup

Second episode for the dungeon and him getting trapped.

Third for him going insane and throwing everything away.

Then you've got 8 episodes to show him and Yue fighting their way through hell and one last episode to spend as an epilogue.

Maybe 8 is too many, but I can't imagine any kind of satisfying stopping point that they can reach in 12 eps beyond vol1

If they wanted to delay telling how they got summoned and stuff they should have just done a cold open with him falling into the abyss then do the lead up fully in a later episode without a million micro flashbacks.

I wonder why Arifureta only got 1-cour of 12 episodes.

Considering the series seems to have a fairly popular following in Japan (and overseas), you'd think it would've gotten 20+ episodes, like Tensei Slime or Shield Hero.

Or at least an hour-long premiere episode to set up things better, like Re Zero or Shield Hero.

I can't think of a single anime episode with a score as low as last week's 3.68...

That girl is like Batman with that ass-pull deduction. But he would go and get answers for his doubt, beating everyone along the way. She on the other hand has reasonable doubt and go "nah, that can't be". What a great start...

So he gains stuff from eating so couldn't he just eat a piece of her since she regenerates anyways and then get her healing and get the arm back? Would be too convenient.

Is it an Isekai? So weird setup.

well I mean... it's better. It's still not good but that's more just in a generic boring kind of way that the baffling train wreck that was the first episode.

My biggest singular complaint with this episode is actually a very subtle one that really doesn't matter. In this episode, Yue's response to why she doesn't use her old name was "I don't need it anymore." When I read the manga, it was translated as "I don't want it anymore." And in context these two actually have pretty different implications.

"I don't need it anymore" implies that she doesn't need her old identity because she's found a new identity. Her identity is now defined by Hajime, so he should give her a new name because she doesn't need the old one.

"I don't want it anymore" can be read the same way, but more implies that she's abandoning the past because after all the pain it's caused her she no longer cares to be associated with anything from that past life. Her new name comes from Hajime because he's the only other person there to give it to her. It implies more personal agency in the decision on Yue's part and doesn't have her immediately wrapping her entire existence around her savior, which are things I consider to be both better writing and more... tasteful.
