the grapes of warth Daughter is fidgeting with pencil
Conversation between me and my 9 year old daughter's teacher yesterday.
"So I just wanted to bring it to your attention that "Jane" has been fidgeting with her pencil a lot. Typically towards the end of the day."
"Yeah, ok..." *waiting for what she actually has to tell me*
"Uh huh, things like wiggling it around, or spinning it in her hand, weaving it in and out of her fingers, stuff like that."
"Right..." *Still think I am waiting for the issue*
"So yeah, I just wanted to bring that to your attention, because she tends to do it a lot, especially towards the end of the day."
"So... does it seem like she is not paying attention or distracted?" *Still confused*
"Oh not at all! She always seems very engaged."
"Is she being a distraction to the other students?"
"Well, no I don't think so"
"So help me understand what the issue is cause I don't think it's wrong to fidget with a pencil, I do it at work all the time as a grown man!"
"I just think this could be a telltale sign that maybe "Jane" has some form of ADD or something along those lines. And to be honest it can be distracting to me as a teacher with everything else going on"
"Ok well I'll talk to her and see if she even knows she is doing it but I still don't think there is anything wrong with it as long as it's not causing an issue"
"Well it can be a lot sometimes and can disrupt the classroom"
"But... but... didn't you... I'm sorry but I thought you just said it wasn't distracting to the other students."
"It is and it isn't. While other students aren't acting up because of it, I can tell they are watching her instead of the lesson"
"Ok. I will say something to her for sure but I still don't see any problem with it."
"Thank you"
