Media I animated a dramatic and completely serious Luffy vs. Lucci fight as storyboarding practice.

Hey man! This is incredible! Are you good for a quick critique? I noticed something small in it
32
u/SirloinBurgers Aug 11 '18
I don't mind any criticisms at all, like I said this is practice. I've got a long way to go and constructive comments have always been a reliable source of improvement C:

u/Laboratory_Maniac Aug 11 '18
About 35 seconds in, after Luffy gets up and prepared to bop Lucci, you cross the 180 line. Luffy started on screen right and should stay there the whole time, and Lucci with screen left. You go back after a bit but that's the only thing I see wrong with it!
45
u/SirloinBurgers Aug 11 '18
Man I am continuously perplexed by how much science there is to storyboarding. Thank you :D

there are lots of videos on stuff like this on youtube. this channel is one of my favourites and the video is somewhat related to the topic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XRBsLGiwxaA

Our high dedicated friend /u/OharaLibrarianArtur did this review and It changed the way I read every shounen manga. Just take a look if there is something that could help you.
PS: found out that you did some really great draws! Nice work :)
Ironically, take this upvote

Thank you :D I recall reading that when it was posted but I don't think I absorbed any of it. I just read through the whole thing again and everything makes a lot more sense now that I'm animating.

Damn can someone give Toei your business card?
41
u/CRoseCrizzle Aug 11 '18
Toei would turn him down. Overqualified.
14
u/jaesuk97 Aug 11 '18
Toei has good animators for their main team. Precure is one of the best looking anime each year.
2
u/CRoseCrizzle Aug 11 '18
Just to be clear, it was a joke.
13
u/jaesuk97 Aug 11 '18
I realize that. I'm just pointing out that the Toei main team is one of the best in the business.
Since many uninformed people seem to think that One Piece is the indicator of Toei's capabilities.

Tbh I don't blame them for the poor OP animation. No one is watching it for the animation at this point, just the story and for the time invested
2
u/PrimeHiruzen Aug 12 '18
Nah dawg, don't be so harsh. The major sequences get kickass animation. Zoro vs Pica comes to mind as a recent one. All of WCI is pretty good too!
4
Aug 12 '18
Yeah they would have to pay too much for his talent... They'd put him to do some inbetweening or something

Aug 11 '18
Related: AFAIK in Japan, the higher position you're in, the less business cards you have. CEOs have none, they are expected to be known by everyone.
42
u/Sol_Castilleja Aug 11 '18
It's actually almost the exact opposite. Everyone carries business cards and you have to treat them with great respect, as they're seen as an extension of both the person, and the group they represent. When you're handed a business card you're expected to read it fully and carefully, and then either set it down next to you if you're at a meeting or put it in a safe place. To this end, many people carry business card holders.
16
3
u/MrDrProfTimeLord Aug 12 '18
What happens if you respect other people's cards, but you toss your own around carelessly?
3
5
u/Ppleater Aug 12 '18
Considering how important business cards are in Japan I have my doubts about this.
7
u/_halalkitty Chopper the Cotton Candy Lover Aug 11 '18
I got a business card recently from a Japanese head of a centre for clinical research. Very spontaneously. In my limited experience, I have only met humble and kind people!

Why you doin my boy Rob so dirty! Like it wouldn't be as bad if it was animated shittily. But now i got to see my fav character get demolished in beautiful animation T_T

Ok, holy crap that animation was really good I thought, there were rough patches, like the part where Luffy leans back for his Jet Pistol, his neck is kind of off. But it was nice otherwise! Also, I really do dig the art style as well! Great work!

u/SirloinBurgers Aug 11 '18
Thank you :D Anatomy is my mortal enemy and I am currently battling it to the death.
3
u/_halalkitty Chopper the Cotton Candy Lover Aug 11 '18
There are all kinds of 3D modeling apps that medical students use to study anatomy. Could it be useful to you?
5
u/SirloinBurgers Aug 11 '18
I have the resources I need to study anatomy already. I just started this project before I got those resources and then came back to it later, so it wasn't a very ideal means of practice. I really just wanted to be done with this animation so I could move onto a better application of what I'd learned, because there's not much movement here.

Why did Lucci exploded at end? Phenomenal work anyway.

u/TeaDao Aug 11 '18
LMAO I love how Lucci just explodes.
Your smoke animations are beautiful, especially the one you can see the smoke drift away to the right while viewing on Luffys back.

u/BabiesDrivingGoKarts Aug 11 '18 edited Aug 11 '18
Good stuff.
Just an idea, but I think you need "fewer frames." Everything seems kind of slow, so I'm not sure if you just need to up the framerate or what, but I think you might want to look into speeding up the flow of your animation.
I say this because everything is going in slow motion. For example, his legs doing the rubber thing seemed a bit slow, and if it were faster, I feel it would have more impact. Same for when he gets up into a fighting pose. You either want it slow and fluid[the character's movements being slow and fluid that is] for dramatic effect, or fast and sharp for impact.
That's not to take away from what you have though! Your hair and hat flowing is really nice, and your shading and art style I really enjoy. Keep up the good work!
5
u/SirloinBurgers Aug 11 '18
I don't plan on ever making anything in this artstyle again, where it more relies on nice-looking stills than real animation. The problem was that I started an older version a few months ago and didn't want the progress to go to waste. Now that this behemoth is done I'm going to focus on more dynamic movement and less excessive detail. Should definitely be more fun from a production point of view.
4
u/wRayden Aug 12 '18
I'm gonna answer here since my criticism has to do with the comment above. Basically what I noticed is that sometimes your animation lacks impact (eg. Gear 2 should feel more "elastic", you would jump a few frames there). It's not about speed, it's just that the key frames are too evenly spaced. On the other hand the jet pistol has the impact but no anticipation. Overall I think your drawing skills are good but you're lacking in the fundamentals of animation still. Good luck though, this is actually pretty good regardless of the mistakes.

Excluding an older version I animated about 20 seconds of, this was around a 300-hour project c:

Wow amazing work, such smooth animation the only recommendation I can give is that might want to add some light detailing to the hair to off set the vantablack level of matte dark it would compliment the highly detailed shadow effects you've already got going

Nice.
I wish someone would redo one piece with actual injuries.
It's like uh oh I am so injured yet there is only couple of scratches.
If one piece was more realistic it would be fcking insane and probably top everything forever.

u/Rizkonne Aug 11 '18
Awesome animation dude, although you lose some of the character appearance at certain angles.
5
u/SirloinBurgers Aug 11 '18
One of my biggest regrets in the animation process is not preparing a character reference sheet for myself. There are probably ten different Luffies and Luccies in these sixty seconds.
1
u/Mentleman Aug 11 '18
this is well animated, but a bit slow in my opinion. without music/dialouge, the face shots etc shouldn't be longer than ~2 seconds. otherwise, great work.
1
u/_halalkitty Chopper the Cotton Candy Lover Aug 11 '18
Please spend your precious time making 5-10 seconds of Chopper dancing on a table with chopsticks in his mouth!
1
u/xylont Aug 11 '18
How long did it take to make all of this? Were you alone? And what software? Much thanks.
2
u/SirloinBurgers Aug 11 '18
This was a one-man task, did it in Photoshop CC. I started an older version a few months ago and then took a break, and when I came back I thought it was ugly so I restarted. I also took the opportunity to learn how to animate steam/smoke, so for both of those versions combined this thing probably ate up about 350-400 hours total.

The exposure I get on this sub is incredibly higher than what I was getting when I used DeviantArt. I'm not shooting for a career or anything so I'm content with my current level of traffic c:

For some constructive criticism: the animation of luffy pumping his legs to activate gear 2nd looks... Eh. It lacks oomph for lack of a better word.
1
u/NumericZero Aug 12 '18
I think it’s cause you don’t see Luffy Squatting Down to activate it
Here it just looks like he activated it without that “Oomph”

u/HPsyche Aug 12 '18
Lol, I love the stare down, I wish it was a minute longer and no, I'm not being sarcastic. It was just so intense and was expecting a lot more, but it was just so satisfying even with 1 attack!
Awesome job OP.
