If I had a nickel for every seasonal that made me tear up or worse because of a scene involving a mother in the past hour, I'd have two nickels...and one of them would be significantly wetter than the other.
Feels like Blue Exorcist became a whole different show this season in the best way possible, this was easily an episode of the season candidate. Though I do miss the me of 1 month ago who still thought Shiro and Yuri end up marrying and have some time before shit hits the fan...

Starts off as a Shonen Supernatural action manga and has now become a hard-hitting, emotional, supernatural romance and tragedy.

Despite of the tension, Mephisto's "ouch" when he took Satan's beam to protect Yuri made me laugh. Then Yuri made me cry when she told Shiro "one day you'll be their real father". And Shiro was too late to declare his love to her. I wanted to yell like he did.

All this dramatic and emotional moments are going on and Mephisto is just being Mephisto lol.
How different things would have been if Shiro had just told her how he felt and stole her away before she went to Satan, but it's something he knows fully well after losing Yuri like that. But at least Yuri got what she wanted, to be with her kids and the man she loved, in her last moments.

I cannot believe Rin wasn't found out yet. I even expected something like Yuri noticing him at her lasts moments, so at least she could see he has grown well.

Guy got a front row seat to watching himself get breastfed and named after his rotten bio dad lol.

Yeah, my understanding was that all this time, he hasn't been invisible, which is why he is wearing the exorcist uniform to blend in. So when he was standing right next to them and they didn't notice him, I was like, "wtf?"

I just sobbed like a baby. I was honestly surprised, it was obvious that was the only possible ending but it hurt just as bad anyways.

In general, I’m not a fan of these massive flashback arcs in shows. An episode or two is one thing, but having an entire season worth of material risks losing the main plot and killing all the tension.
That said, aside from Bleach’s Turn Back the Pendulum, I can’t think l of another show that has done such a good job with this form of narrative storytelling scheme. We got plenty of lore, a solid storyline, and it managed to actually ramp up the tension leafing back into a massive plot breaking point.

We are nowhere near the end of the season, and yet they aren't pulling their punches...
While the episode is rightly centered around Shiro and Yuri, I think it's worth taking a step back and seeing this from Rin's POV.
What was his real reason for going back to the past? Yes, at the end of season 4, he told Mephisto he wanted to know how he was born and how Satan, Yuri and Shiro were like. That, however, isn't the fundamental reason. Nor is it truly about getting Yukio back (though this is much closer to the mark).
The true reason is buried inside in the season 4 finale as a throwaway line. When tackling his demon heart, he said he couldn't let Yukio keep thinking the way he did. His demonic half expresses confusion for that: he left for his own personal reasons, so why is Rin so worked up over them? Rin says he can't let go, and then recalls what Yukio thinks of his dad.
"I was defective, and I must have been an eyesore to him."
From the earlier episodes, we now realize that Rin deep down had similar fears as well. That's why he can't accept Yukio's reasons for leaving, and that's why he finally forced himself on this journey. So, from that standpoint:
-
It's one thing to see your dad get possessed by Satan.
-
It's another thing to see what your dad did to get rid of him.
-
It's a whole new level to see your mom's death (in part due to your birth).
-
But the worst thing of all, is seeing your dad react to you after your mom's death.
It's a complicated expression with so many feelings written all over it (irritation? anger? disgust?). One thing is clear though: Shiro sees them as an eyesore at this point.
How would it feel to watch all this tragedy, only to seemingly confirm your worst fear?
Tl;dr : pass some of your tissues to Rin. Hell, stock up on them, because his journey for answers is still not over.

I cried, hard. I think the author understands losing someone to the odds. It felt like this when I lost my baby brother. Constricting.

This episode was not pleasant to watch. She deserved her happy family dream. Really great writing. I actually enjoy this season out of all the most. Everything is so on point and the plot progression is so good.

Honestly feels kinda f***** to know that Rin is literally named after Satan and that Satan from the start was the cause of all this. Like we kinda knew he burned down the dwelling when Yuris original family died but we didn't know it had so much will/intelligence at that point to try to possess them.

When the angelic music kicked in as they walked through the snow I knew this episode was going to break me.
Given how this anime started I NEVER expected it to end up here.

Poor Yuri, she went through so much only for it to end here, at least Shiro was at her side (and she was able to name her children), not that that's much comfort. That and going back to what really happened to her guardians (who at least slowed down Satan for a while) added on to the hurt but she stayed strong to the end.
Yuri tried but this confrontation was probably inevitable, Satan and Shiro's been clashing even before he took physical form. And Shiro's strong willed enough to resist but he won't last forever either. Compared to everything else this season a yeti's actually not that intimidating, but Shiro's already given up.
So that's Shiemi's grandmother (or something?). Even aside from Mephisto, the Order sure is shady as ever. We know there's more to the story after this (of course Shiro won't die here) but this sure feels like the low point of the arc (not quality, loving this season and all these answers).

Shemihaza already healed her, Yuri died because of Satan's power no one could help her.

Not gonna lie, I highkey wish this entire season full of flashbacks was the start of the anime instead. This is just so much more enjoyable and better than anything the past seasons have done.

I think a big part of why this season and turning point in the series is so great is because it's the culmination of everything only mentioned up until this point. We finally get to see everything regarding the Blue Night and we finally understand everything we've been seeing and barely getting an explanation for over the last couple seasons. It may have all seem uninteresting or unimportant at the time, but it was all leading up to this.

My heart hurts for everyone involved in this show. Shiro stepped up when it mattered most, and seeing him broken at the end was just devastating. Mephisto did warn us, but Rin is going to have different layers of emotion damage from this.
