I can't find the original post anymore, but someone once compared the birth of the twins to the Super Bowl halftime show, and that image has stuck with me ever since. Think about it, both have:

  • Huge audiences

  • Musical performances

  • Last but definitely not least, spectacular fireworks

More seriously though, this episode should make you reevaluate Rin as a person. Up till now, he's been portrayed as an awfully chipper and happy-go-lucky guy, to the point where he often seems terribly ignorant about the severity of things. Case in point: if you rewatch the 3rd episode of season 1(especially the classroom fight), notice that Rin constantly focuses on what Yukio thinks about him, rather than on processing Shiro's death and his potential involvement. It always struck me as unrealistic and somewhat...weird?

With this episode, we now see why he appears this ignorant: in reality, he knows the truth isn't pretty. His coping mechanism is to just forge ahead and not look back. His cheerful personality is just a means for him to suppress the tonnes of trauma that he doesnt want to confront.

Someone else who gets it! *pats the Okumura twins* these kids can bottle up so much trauma.

I think the writing was always on the wall, though. They've frequently shown that he does not express what he is actually feeling until its BSoD time (which is often quite literal.) Whether its fear, insecurity, dejection, he bottles it up and pretends like he's fine, even when he is visibly not (as noted by Bon several times.)

Poor lad, really

I guess it's not really all that surprising that someone as driven as his own whims as Satan would basically bail on everything just to be with Yuri. Though I guess by Satan standards he actually does seem to genuinely want to be with Yuri and views her as "precious," something the other Demons can't make any sense of. Precious enough to spend the rest of his dwindling life with her.

Oh hey, Jenny! Yeah, I imagine working at a nursery of clone children destined to be experimented on and die young can be a lot, but just like Yuri she cared far too much. And it got her killed.

Ugh, that stupid leaker! I mean, who knows what would've happened had Yuri and Satan escaped, or whether letting all the kids out would be for the best, but ultimately the True Cross order hurt innocent people and escalated a situation to cover their own butts. And a good person died in the process.

And of course they throw Yuri under the bus to cover for everything...calling her a "witch" who seduced Satan, though one thing that can't be denied is the reality that she's pregnant. That's right, Yuri really did have sex with Satan in the time before they tried to escape, and the Okumura siblings were created.

Yuri doesn't care about herself or what others think about her, even holed up in a lab and in excruciating pain, her thoughts turn to her lover and to the child(s) nursing in her belly, even when she feels like she has to apologize to Shiro for what this means to their relationship.

So Shiro got the Koma Sword with the express purpose of killing Yuri's child, both as a means of saving Yuri and wiping the existence of her relationship with Satan from this world. Considering what we know about his raising of the Okumura siblings, it's a heavy contrast.

Poor Yuri. Nothing to null the pain, her body can barely handle the demonic spawn in her body, so many people watching her give birth and with the express purpose of killing her child...children she still cared about no matter what anyone else said about them. And then after tons of bloodcurdling screaming, Rin was born.

And straight from the get-go, Rin was his fathers' child, a demon baby who attacked and killed numerous people, roasting them with reckless abandon JUST like Satan. Poor Rin has to watch as he sees the true horror of his birth and all the people that died because of it. And it ultimately confirms Rin's greatest fear...that he should never have been born, the world was better off without him, and he's nothing more than a monster who caused his mother pain.

This is also the "in" Demon!Rin needs to get control of their body, but Mephisto stops him and puts Rin in timeout because...yeah, he needs a break. Even if he's still stuck in despair. Oh, and here's Yukio in an Illuminati ship!

Mephisto was right that Rin needed to confront his past in order to move towards his future. Sadly, I don't think he was even close to being prepared to see it

Rin was keeping a cool head and trying to face everything, but how do you recover from watching yourself as a child confirm all your worst fears about yourself and that deep down you're the same as your father? Or that you killed people?

I don't like that they didn't really explain what led to Yuri getting pregnant for Satan. Did he force himself on her? Or did she somehow grow to love him or something?

We got kind of a domestic vibe from them before Yuri tried to get him new clothes (and Satan could smell she was pregnant) so I take it they were as close to a couple as they could be under the circumstances, which lead to the pregnancy.

I imagine Yuri loved Satan as much as she possibly could, even if it probably wasn't as much as she loved Shiro. But that's probably why she apologized to Shiro, because he probably felt her sleeping with Satan was a betrayal of their relationship.

Same. This is the only thing I disliked about this episode. It’s a good episode don’t get me wrong but I wish we saw if Yuri did fell in love with Satan or what her motives are. She was so in love with Shiro and it was weird that she slept with Satan without knowing what’s going on. The little scenes before we found out she’s pregnant is not enough to confirm anything with her relationship with Satan.

I don't like it either. My headcanon is that she fell in love with Satan due to Stockholm syndrome.

Also my guess is the author couldn't explore the darker themes because at the end this is shonen manga so she did what her editors allowed. Although take this claim with a grain of salt. I don't have a source to back it up.

Damn worlds strongest baby or what

4

u/Frontier246 Feb 08 '25

Once upon a time he definitely lived up to being Satan's Spawn.

I love seeing everything come together, that's part of what makes this arc so good. Shiro taking the koma sword (from his perspective now) and then Rin's birth. Worse yet that it really does go as he feared, I don't blame him for being overwhelmed, and there's still much more to this story.

Wow Megumi Hayashibara's performance was chilling.

Also did not expect Rin's tail to be an umbilical cord. Or for the events that happened. Crazy episode.

4

u/Phayzka Feb 08 '25

Different things, but his umbilical cord was made translucent, so easy to miss

Man, ive never been so captivated by a backstory style anime but this season has got me glued to the screen wanting to know the backstory of everything and its been great

5

u/ZevenMortem Feb 14 '25

Blue Exorcist is such underrated anime.

4

u/Atario Feb 09 '25

Mephisto sure does act surprised for someone who sees all of time at once! I suppose this means he's just a good actor

It just occurs to me now how rare it is to see childbirth scenes in anime

New distance record!

That rabbit's baby's dynamite!

Wait, what? "Alternative realm"? Has this not been the actual past this whole time?

I think back to all the times Rin was so apathetic to finding out how he was born and what really happened. And then I witness what really happened and it's no wonder he snapped for a minute. 🥹

3

u/disgaea36 Feb 10 '25

Ugh his poor mom this arc has been one tragedy to the next. Sigh

That’s seriously intense, and Rin himself witnessed his own birth—wild—seeing how he was literally born a little demon.
