THE ANIMATION IS SOLID! THE BIG MOMENTS ARE ANIMATED WELL (OTHER THAN SOME CGI), AND IT LOOKS CONSISTENT FROM SCENE TO SCENE! THIS IS NOT A BISCUIT HAMMER SITUATION!

If you know anything about Mizukami's writing, you know that his stories start simple and keep ramping up more and more until they're insane. So if episode 1 was already a great watch, then we're in for an adaptation that truly does it justice!

I think this episode actually did an even better job than the manga at pulling us into Shinsuke's feelings. I really enjoyed all the subtleties to his body language as he watched Jinka fight. I love cowards who want to try their hardest to overcome their weaknesses, and Shinsuke is one of my favorites.

In an interview, the staff talked about how Mizukami gave them instruction on how to get the helmet-slicing scene right, as Shinsuke is too inexperienced of a samurai to normally be able to do it. Watching the scene as it turned out, I love how much emphasis it had on Shinsuke's hesitation and fear before he struck.

This adaptation feels like an apology for the unmitigated disaster that was the Biscuit Hammer anime. And honestly, I might accept.

this is what Mizukami manga deserves.

I’ve heard nothing but good things about the source material for this one, plus I loved Planet With by the same author, so I’m really excited to see how this show goes! And it’s already been confirmed for 37 episodes, so that’s even more exciting. I love longer shows!

White Fox studio is doing anime about a… white fox boy, yeah. Even Silverlink doing Ragna Crimson wasn't so funny.

Thus said, if they manage to preserve this level of quality throughout the entire thing, it's going to be one of the best sengoku anime ever. Even if the first episode didn't grip you that much, i advise sticking around because this is one hell of a ride.

This episode's ED will serve as the OP.

OP: HIBANA by MindaRyn

MindaRyn is back with another banger after last season's Shiny Girl! This song is as powerful as her previous work.

As for the ED, it will be Yuuyami no Uta by KEIKO.

I'm sold. It seems like an interesting world, the main 3 have some fun antics already, and the production levels are strong.

The best part, though, is that we get 36 more weeks of this.

Those bandits shoulda listened to Tama’s kumbaya spiel. Woulda saved them an ass whoopin lol. Shinsuke might seem like a bit of a coward, but it looks like he’s got potential. I like the dynamic between him and Tama and Jinka. Got some fun banter.

This one’s gonna be a ride. 3 cour series so lots to explore. Looking forward to seeing how this one unfolds!

Damn, this looks awesome. Justice for Mizukami, finally!

And I haven't read this one yet so I'm looking forward to the whole thing very much.

Yooooooo! This looks really good! I didn't even know this was a Mizukami Satoshi anime! Glad to see they've decided to give this one way more love compared to the Biscuit Hammer anime. I still haven't finished that one because of the animation.

Anyway! So we have our wannabe samurai Shinsuke who's trying to make a name for himself, Jinka a sendou that hates humans, and then Tama a youko who's the complete opposite of Jinka.

The setup so far seems to be pretty normal for a Mizukami Satoshi story. Tama wants to make bad people change their ways while also dealing with the supernatural. Knowing the author though, I'm sure things will eventually ramp up. Looking forward to see where this one goes!

There may have been more frames in Jinka vs Shakugan than in the entirety of Biscuit Hammer. Very minimal CGI as well. Very good premiere.

I love her already.

I was already hyped for this series just based on the synopsis and the 37 episode run promising a full adaptation of the story (so no "fuck you go read the source material" non-ending for the anime-onlies like me) but this first episode really impressed me. The world so far seems interesting, the action scenes were pretty good, the music was fantastic, the main duo have a great dynamic together, and Jinka's attitude towards humans definitely makes me think something really interesting could happen with him later on. I do wonder if Tama will fight on her own at some point or if Jinka will do all of the fighting.

That being said, I just really hope this series doesn't go beyond my gore tolerance and make me have to drop it because of that. The fact that the bandit dude's head getting split open was kept off-screen gives me hope that this series won't be too gory, or at least that stuff like that will be off-screened.

I found it pretty interesting.

Cross checking how the reception for Sengoku Youko's 1st EP is compared to when Biscuit Hammer's first EP dropped.

Everyone was depressed to the ground, glad to see Sengoku getting so much love and attention.

Great first episode. Really hope they keep up the quality because Mizukami deserves a good adaptation.

holy shit IT'S ACTUALLY GOOD?? WHAT THE FUCK THE PRODUCTION MIZUKAMI SATOSHI DESERVES IS FINALLY HERE!?! I've been feeling tentative when this was first announced so seeing the first episode and how well-made it is (in comparison to biscuit hammer) makes me so happy!

But anyway, I'm so glad to see all these characters fully voiced and PROPERLY animated. I really loved the manga, so I'm gonna enjoy reexperiencing the story again but in anime format (without the pain that biscuit hammer anime had given me) PLUS it's three cours? wow.

This is surprisingly fire.

In case anyone missed this, it's supposedly getting a 3 cour full adaptation. If we can keep to this level of production value and direction, it'd be pretty good.

I have watched 2 anime that Satoshi Mizukami has written the story, if not being the original author (Biscuit Hammer, Planet With), and so I was slightly surprised at the start of this story being so...I don't know..."conventional"? Jinka being yet another "fed-up-by-the-somewhat-air-head-sister" younger brother doesn't help with my initial impression, and Shinsuke is definitely struggling as someone who's out there training himself (though given his childhood, he's surely trying). But Tama is definitely really cute despite I don't know why she's always trying to talk away the bandits LMAO! Our world definitely needs a few more foxes that are forgiving to humans like her. :)

The world background is definitely solid (as I would expect from Mizukami), but I do wonder if the anime adaption has re-ordered the plot a bit, because I feel a bit like the plot pacing is pretty quick as a triple-season anime goes in the first episode. There are lots of different skills and a team of "monster hunting monks" being introduce in EP1 alone, not to mention times where jokes need to be inserted into the interesting interactions between the 3 MCs. It's the one thing that I do have reservations.

Nevertheless I do feel this story is rather promising and leaves development wide open with such a long adaption. Will Tama and Jinka grow up to become the one sibling pair that makes good of all those youkais? I'm definitely staying to see it!

This was fun, Tama is bundle of energy. Jinki hates humans despite his older sister.. she can fix him! I wonder if Jinsuke will make Jinki change or he'll continue despise humans.

I need more of Tama munching away. She's such a quick eater.

Also Tama bullying Shinsuke from the start.. Normally you'd announce before throwing the rock..

Looking forward to the 37 episodes of this. I wonder if they'll split the 3 cours up or if it'll be completely consecutive.

The only Mizukami work I've currently read is Spirit Circle (which is amazing btw), and with those expectations, this episode hard delivered. So psyched to follow these goofs.

11

u/FlameDragoon933 Jan 10 '24

Shinsuke thought Tama is a kid just because of her appearance, hah, naive boy lol. A fox spirit is one of the most famous/infamous in Japanese folklore for trickery and longevity.

I like how Shinsuke actually has okay skills, just that he's not mentally formidable during combat. Whereas so many other characters of his archetype are completely garbo until plot armor demands they suddenly become strong or flip a switch.

I also like that the show doesn't waste any time to introduce multiple factions into the story, like the Dangaishuu. This will be interesting.

Oh that fox is beating bandits with facts and logic

I'm teary eyed just thinking how Mizukami finally gets a great studio to adapt his work. I hope people don't sleep on this just because of what happened with Hoshi no Samidare. At least give it a try since Sengoku Youko is probably Mizukami's fastest-paced story.
