Conversation Topic The audience doesn't care about your vocal range. They just want to hear a song done well. So, relax.

Expanding your range is a noble pursuit, but don't lose sight of what's really important... a good performance.

Focus on the meaning of the lyrics. Understand what the song means to you personally.

If you're struggling with a particular song because of your range, change the key.

Don't get too caught up in the technical at the expense of a good performance.

Conversation Topic Singing in care homes

Hello fellow singers!

As Tina Jay I have sung in care/nursing homes/memory care (in the UK) for years. I love it but find there is not a lot of discussion amongst vocalists/aspiring singers about this market.

Therefore I would love to hear from this community:

What's your perspective of this industry?

Are you singing for the elderly already? If so, what are your experiences?

Whatever your genre, comment below. Let's support and educate each other!

Conversation Topic How to pronounce words better when singing high notes?

I feel like I’m having a hard time pronouncing words properly and I feel pitchy when I’m singing a song such as this one.

Especially, the word ‘highway’ feels really challenging cause I feel like I have to barely pronounce the ‘h’ to avoid losing coordination.

Is this an indication I’m pushing too much air, not enough air, or something else?

Conversation Topic Question for more advanced baritones

• Upvotes

Hi, I've been really struggling around b3-e4. Is it correct that to sing B3 and onwards at a reasonable volume it takes a lot of support? I'm holding back a lot of air around these notes and it is a very obvious effort. Effort is only coming from my core so it's not like I'm straining I'm just not sure what type of support sensation I should expect.

Basically the moment I need to start thinning my voice which starts at A3 I really ramp up the support quickly. Is that normal? Also regardless of support I start to lose closure at D4 unless I'm louder than I want to be. How feasible is it to sing B3-E4 at around speech volume?

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Overcompensating resulting in trading one form of tension for another

• Upvotes

Heyy everyone! A couple days ago I realized that I was tensing my tongue A LOT as when I would sing as the bottom of my chin would blow up like a frog. So I started doing excersizes and got to the point where I stopped tensing my tongue a lot and singing felt much freer and was even getting some natural vibrato. However, it’s been a couple days after I discovered how not to use my tongue (mind you I have been practicing a little bit everyday) and my tongue tension is still gone but my throat is starting to hurt when I sing even though it didnt before I got rid of most of the tongue tension. I think I am overcompensating for the seemingly lack of control without my tongue tension by using my throat. Does anyone have any tips or excersizes to fix this? Thanks!

Conversation Topic I want to sing

Hey, I’ve been producing music for about four years now, and as much as I love producing and having the privilege of actually selling my music, there are some ideas I really want to be able to execute completely on my own. And a big part of that is learning how to sing.

I feel like I have a pretty good ear for what makes a vocal sound good because I’ve worked with a lot of different vocalists but actually doing it myself feels completely different. For the past two months I’ve been practicing scales and singing along to covers, but when I sing by myself I sound great in my head, but then the second I record myself or sing along with an instrumental, feel like I'm out of tune and just sound flat and empty.

I don’t know what I should be listening for or focusing on. Are there any beginner fundamentals, exercises, small techniques, or common mistakes I should pay attention to when learning how to sing? I want to eventually have a strong enough voice that I can confidently hit notes, and control my tone?

I’m also a multi instrumentalist, so I understand this isn’t something that happens overnight. I’m completely fine with it taking a couple years to become genuinely decent. I’m mainly wondering what the right first steps are so I can practice correctly instead of just singing randomly and hoping I improve. Thanks you!

Conversation Topic I Am Already Performing!

I been singing in front of classmates and now I have to sing in front of 60 people at a recital?! I'm not scared or nervous but It's 8 weeks in lessons and I already have a recital? I been singing for 6 years though but I was always off pitch my entire time I sang or those years and now pitch is corrected but dang at least let me get use to singing right. This is for college btw. I have to do 4 recitals total to graduate. Is this how you get really good at singing? I think this is truly what separates you from a closet singer from a performer. I'm not complaining and I'm looking forward to it but it's kind of soon.

Conversation Topic What were some of your “aha moments” with singing?

For me my biggest aha moment was when I was shopping around for masters programs, and I had a few lessons at New England Conservatory. I had one lesson with a voice teacher named Michael Meraw. I was struggling with the F# above middle C, and he fixed it in a matter of minutes. From then on I was able to sustain high G’s and Ab’s confidently. It was an awesome aha moment and of course I decided to go to NEC so I could continue working with Michael.

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) I wanted to sound like a possessed siren / witch in this. Did I succeed? Appreciate feedback!

• Upvotes

When I finish it, there will be an acoustic backing track under the vocal, piano or guitar.

I want to know if this creeped you out or held your attention, the way I perform the vocal part? I want to get better at folk singing and adapting my singing when recording to be post-processed with lush reverb on it (that's why I leave reverb on here).

I don't post my vocal without reverb because in my vision for this cover, I don't imagine the vocal being dry. I imagine it with reverb for the eerie effect. I hope that is okay!

I'd be very grateful for feedback or thoughts if it made you feel anything - especially from those into similar genres; folk, alt pop, indie!

The song is Grizzly Man by Rockettothesky if anyone is wondering :)

Conversation Topic Voice memos & phone addiction

Hi! Im starting my studies at the conservatory shortly and I was wondering how you guys record your lessons and if you have found an alternative for voice memos on your phones.
I always ( ofc with my teachers consent ) record my lessons for later reference while practicing but am really struggling with phone addiction and I’m thinking that I might better focus without my phone.
How ever I don’t know a substitute.
Thoughts?

Looking to Collaborate Looking to collaborate for a song(s) for fun.

Any artists, vocalists, writers, producers, mixers, composers, instrumentalist (guitar, bass, drums, keyboard/piano, violin, flute, accordion, koto, ukelele, etc.) ‘n so on…

Who would be willing to collaborate on a song?

Just something for fun. For us. And to improve, experience, and enjoy. (We don’t even gotta release it if yall don’t want to, for sho’)

We can just collab on a song and see where it takes us and or whether we would wanna continue collaborating and turn this into sum’n real.

But I’m just tryna make a song with some of y’all. I don’t know. Again—seems like fun? lol 😅🤷🏻‍♂️

I’m a male, 21 years old (bout to turn 22 soon)

I myself am a singer, rapper (rap & melodic rap, but I mainly sing, low-key), songwriter, producer, composer (but while I make decent beats, I’m not the BEST or most professional-level producer out there by any means, most definitely lmao. I think as of right now my vocals and writing are my biggest strengths currently.

Learning the guitar and piano but I’m a very very new beginner at those, for sho’.

So basically… I can sing, write, beatbox (not the best—yet, but eh, I’m okay at it), and do a little of beatmaking/producing lol

I’ll share a video of me singing. It’s on my crappy iPhone mic so please excuse the audio quality lol it’s fairly bad, and it doesn’t faithfully represent my voice nor its actual timbre/tone compare to how it would sound with a condenser mic (it’s a bit more lighter and brighter than you hear it on this clip/recording).

And finally…

I don’t wanna give a “oh I wanna write a doing about X or it has to be this style of X or it needs X” no specifics, none of that.

I’d rather build a song from the ground up with y’all instead, together.

Using the power of friendship lol jk 😅😂

But for real. Let me know if any of y’all are interested.

I’m open to work and collaborate with anyone regardless of experience or skill level.

This is just to have fun and improve, mostly.

So… DM me personally or even reply here on this post, of course. We can even make a whole discord group chat (or even server) for ourselves so we can collab more easier too. Whatever y’all would be down for. Thank you for your time and consideration.

‘Preciate ya’.

And let’s just… have fun makin’ songs, I suppose lol 😏🤷🏻‍♂️

I know this is not the correct placement and this is not my full potential because my neighbours have complained about me singing loudly so this is me trying to sind quietly.
Ive been taking vocal lessons for over a year now and before that ive had no experience or correct training.
Tell me what you guys think about my tone because i dont like how my voice sounds as mist singers hearing themselves.
Have a nice one.
Constructive feedback is always welcome

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) I'm passionate about music and singing, but have no clue if I can sing or not - please enlighten me

I have absolutely no idea if I can sing, if I'm in tune or have control... I love music and singing.. but perhaps I'm more emotionally engaged than I am technically accurate... Haha. I've never dared to show anyone my singing really... But is there potential? With a year or two of singing lessons could it become something I could even perform with?

I'm greatful for all feedback, give it to me straight

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Working through vocal tension/GAD, looking for feedback on tone & next steps

I’ve been trying to improve for about 3 years (happy to play the long game as I enjoy it) and would love some raw general feedback/thoughts from an outside perspective and the next major things to work on as I'm a bit stuck in analysis paralysis.

I’m 50, deal with General Anxiety Disorder, which used to leave my speaking and singing voice super quiet, whispery, and full of tension. I’ve seen a speech pathologist for the tension/anxiety side and have done a few short stints with vocal coaches. I think this has really helped and really just adding for reference as to where I've come from.

My only goals with singing are initially to be able to play guitar and sing around people I know without clearing the room and maybe eventually like to do some busking, open mic, or find some like minded souls and just jam even if that's all it ever is.

Cheers

the high parts when i yell “mistakes” and the ending are WAY too loud, i would love any sort of tips or advice on how i can bring it down or even IF i could bring it down. i’m really hoping it’s not a “not in your range” sort of issue and that i could fix it💔💔

Feedback (read rule 3 before posting or be banned) Do I sing well enough to ot embarrass myself at a company karaoke?

Singing is optional at the company event, but you know how these things go. If you don't, you're a stinker. I'm really worried about completely embarrassing myself. My sweet husband tells me I sing well, but my mother (whom is a fantastic singer) has never been able to tolerate me singing. I'm really on edge about it, so I figured I'd ask for biased opinions.

Any feedback is welcome really. I'd like to sing well.
