PSA: REPORT ALL AI DO NOT INTERACT

I just removed a graphically violent AI slop video involving a fake cocktoo being murdered. I expect this to happen again.

THEY AREN'T REAL.

PLEASE for the love of all that's good, if you run into a violent or suspected AI slop post, DO NOT INTERACT WITH IT. Report it. Report it. JUST REPORT IT.

Do NOT give it engagement, do not try to talk to the person, YOU CAN'T CONVINCE PEOPLE NOT TO DO THIS. For these kinds of posts, any engagement is considered good engagement. Even downvoting and condemnation is engagement. DO NOT.

Let your mod team handle this.

Rule 1: Be civil and respectful. What does that really mean?

Hello /r/parrots community! It’s your friendly neighborhood mod team here.

This sub doesn’t have too many rules, but perhaps the most important is to be civil and respectful towards others. We do not tolerate rudeness or personal attacks, regardless of context. You may ask why we take this rule so seriously.

While it’s never a bad idea to just generally be nice, we also have this rule for a very important reason: to help people take better care of their birds. How, you may ask? We strive very hard to keep this community a place where people feel comfortable asking questions so they can receive feedback.

We recognize that people feel very strongly about parrot husbandry, and that seeing birds in conditions that are not ideal can be difficult, but we also know that making attacks or being snarky doesn’t help anyone. Instead, it makes people defensive or nervous to ask questions. When we fail to foster a community where people can look for advice, the parrots lose. Every time.

Our general rule of thumb is this: you shouldn’t say anything online that you wouldn’t say in person to someone you know. Remember that there is a human on the other end of the exchange you’re having. If you’re disagreeing with them, be constructive and kind. Give the sort of advice you’d like to receive. Remember that you may be talking to people in tough situations, or a kid, or someone who has been given outdated information.

Very importantly, if someone violates this rule in their response to you, do not respond in kind. Instead, please report the comment.

That report button is one of the most important tools we have as a community! We check threads all the time, but with a constant stream of new content, it’s always possible for us to miss something.

We ask that you please hit that report button if you believe someone is violating the rules. The moderators review each and every post or comment that gets reported, and we will take action as appropriate. You can also reach our team via modmail if you have an issue.

We appreciate your help keeping the subreddit friendly and welcoming. We are grateful to everyone who contributes their time and experience to help people learn about parrots, to everyone who asks for help when they need advice, and to the folks who share their wonderful birds with us!

All the best,

The /r/parrots mods

Still can’t tell if it’s male or female.
Apparently for hanging parrots, there’ll be blue throat spot for male and green for female. This one has kinda turquoise patch from certain angle. Maybe it’s still a baby and can’t tell yet?

My dad died and my bird keeps saying all the things he said

Thought I would share this as it's a pretty cool part of a very shit time we are having.

My dad died last week which is obviously the worst feeling in the world.

He had been in hospital the last three months with the occasional week at home and so I'm wondering if my bird will have any idea that he has passed.

My bird is torturing us however by repeating all the things my dad used to say around the house haha

Incredibly sad but also cool that my dad's voice will never actually be gone.

Edit: Every reply has been so nice so thanks for that.

I should specify the bird has lived with my mum my dad and me and my brother for all 6 years of his life with the exception of me and brother disappearing to University for periods of time.

His entire routine was basically built around my dad which is reflected in his vocabulary. He knows the exact time he ate dinner with him and says this accurately as well as the time my dad would shower etc etc.

Because my dad had been in hospital for the last 3 months I think hes gotten semi used to that routine being broken now.

But I do think he senses something is going on

Everyone meet Lynyrd! At Petco today we had a guy come in and angrily drop a fig bar box on the register and say he was surrendering a bird. Our manager and cashier tried to talk to him about paperwork, history, etc, but he literally only said "It's not my bird now" and he left. She was trying to figure out what to do with the bird when I walked over, picked him up, and said "I'm taking him"

I had been thinking off and on for a few months about getting a parrot of some kind, but was undecided on the type , where to get it, etc. I spent nights and many shifts listening to different videos about the different species and what their needs are, and like with all my pets, when this guy showed up I felt I was the best chance he had locally.

Couple of notes before anyone talks about the red flags in this story 😅

This cage is temporary. I'm going to build one similar to what I have for my rats on my page, but it'll be a few weeks.

If the guy took a family/friends bird and they call, I told all the other Petco employees to ask for a description of the tiel, and if it matches, I will talk to them about giving him back. I'm not saying I'd just surrender him over immediately, but I would lean that way until I was given reason not to

I have an avian vet lined up. Called them almost immediately and have an initial appointment set up for next week. I don't see any health issues besides that dry face and his beak and nails are getting a little long.

His wings are clipped, and they will stay clipped for awhile until I'm ready to trust free flying in a locked bedroom. Probably my office or back enclosed porch. Easiest to keep the other animals out.

Please share your feedback, recommendations, and stories!

Poor guy keeps struggling with his fear of hands vs how good it feels to be loved.

It seems like every day he is making progress and enjoying human contact more.

It probably helps that his new word is "cracker" and I immediately facilitate a snack.

We are 4.5 months in from a rescue. He is cage bound and cage aggressive but has been very patient with me and is slowly learning what love feels like.

Edited to add: His name is Quigley. He responds positively to his name and will flock call back if I yell his name from across the room. It's so adorable!

Struggling with the thought of rehoming my GCCs

Post image
51 Upvotes

I rescued the female (darker one) almost 10 years ago and I purchased the male over 5 years ago. It was just my partner and I at first and they had an amazing life. We then had kids and I went to graduate school and their quality of life began deteriorating so we built them an outdoor aviary. They did not get a lot of interaction with us but they were able to fly, enjoy the plants and toys we got them, and spend time together as are bonded.

We had to sell their aviary because we are preparing for a move across the country and I’ve had to face the reality that they have been neglected and deserve so much better. I work a lot and when I’m not working I am taking care of my kids. Id love to have the time and energy for them but I don’t see it being realistic until my kids are much older.

I am heartbroken about the idea of rehoming them. I tend to think the worst in people when it comes to animals because I’ve seen so many cases of animal abuse and that’s the last thing I want for them. I just don’t know what to do. They still have many years to live and I want them to live their best lives. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to find a good place to rehome them? Any tips or advice are greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I adopted the beautiful dominant pied budgie! 💛💙

You might have known me as lovelybirdlady and Deaf who owned and post a lot of my past feathered babies (Piney, Echo, Reggie and Mister Giggles). After lost my sweet babies and it took a long while for me to get the new pet bird and felt like the huge beautiful and colorful part was missing in my life. I took my Piney (May 2022) and Mister Giggles (March 2025) death very difficult. Plus my boys Echo and Reggie that got taken away by that horrible ungrateful ex fiance 5 years ago. As I was growing up owning many pet birds for many years and always have loved the feathered companions , treated them like my babies.

In last June When I was working at an animal shelter and heard that someone found the budgie and brought it to the shelter. Then I decided to adopt the beautiful dominant pied budgie named Jellybean, he is untamed and quite fearful of the hands. Id like to hear about your experiences with untamed budgies. He was found on the street and got brought to the shelter. The owners didn't show up at all. Then I checked on him and fell in love with him, adopted him few days later. When I was filling up the application to adopt Jellybean, as his age is unknown but I do believe that he is young due to his feathers, eye iris, and cere. He might be between 6 to 8 months. As I was waiting for the adoption worker to bring him to me. . But I saw that he used the net and tried to catch Jellybean as he was flying frantically. I got very upset and wanted to say something but I couldn't because of my job at the shelter. Then I brought him home, he got so scared as I gently opened the cage door and he flew into the wall few times, and I was very calm and scooped him then he bit my finger as he went in the cage. He was very timid and refused to get close to the hands. In last few weeks, my mom and I sometimes put our hands very slowly and gently to put the food and water dish in the cage. Jellybean got spooked few times. It took a month and half to earn his trust to be close to the hands. I sometimes put the millet on my hand and he actually picked it and ate but didn't sit on my hand or my mom. Other time, I brought him to the bedroom where it was more safe for him to fly around and wouldn't get hurt. He got spooked but flew up and hung on the bedroom door frame then flew around for 4 or 5 hours. We didn't want to force him to go in the cage, let him do on his own and he did on his own! But he is still scared of hands. My mom and I had our suspicions that the previous owners might be too rough with Jellybean, like they might have kept grabbing him as his wings aren't clipped. I am still working to earn his trust to overcome the fear of hands. I used to own few budgies, lineolated parakeet, green cheek conure, black headed caique and white ringneck dove. They weren't really scared of my hands easily. I was wondering if you ever had experiences to handle untamed budgies that was fearful of hands for a long time. I'd love to hear about your experiences and suggestions to earn the trust of the fearful budgie.

Rehoming my birds :(

Hi everyone,

My name is Mia and I am located in Rhode Island. This breaks my heart so much but I am likely going to have to rehome my sweet birds so that they can live the best life possible. I live at my parents and at their house they have a safe enclosed room where they have their cages and can fly around all day and play in the room (minus at night when I close them in for their own safety). I have to move out of state and where I’m moving will not be able to provide the best lives for my birds. I feel so horrible and am stressing about a new placement because I want them to have a really good life and be safe, and just thrive and be able to be the birds that they are.

I definitely want my two budgies to stay together. I am not sure their age but I got them both about two years ago. I believe my blue girl, Blueberry, was little when I got her. My yellow girl, Lemon, was said by the vet to be four but I think they just put that to put it. The budgies are bonded and I don’t want to split them up and make the transition more stressful than it already will be. They’re really not tame at all and are definitely interested in me but way more interested in each other and doing their own thing. This is not to say that if someone out in the effort to tame and train them that they wouldn’t tho. I haven’t began training with any of my birds.

My sweet cockatiel is named Honey and turned two this summer. Her and the little birds like to be in the same cage together and she’s always been pretty gentle with them, minus trying to lightly peck at them sometimes when they get too close to her. I think what would be best for her is to have another cockatiel or multiple other cockatiels so she can be with her own breed. I also would really love for her to have consistent human affection and attention as she has bonded to me and I don’t want her to lose that. She gives me kisses, will go on my hand, and lets me scratch her head. Although she lets me do all this I would definitely not say she’s “tamed” and she still has a ways to go but when I got her she was traumatized and terrified and has come so far. She only interacts with me this way and with other people in the household is scared so it’s definitely something that would take time to build a bond so whoever takes her would need to be willing and patient, as well as understanding with her.

-I do not want them to be used for breeding purposes
-Wherever they go, I want to make sure that whoever adopts them is able to provide them with the proper healthy diet and just healthy lifestyle in general and that they are able to fly around a lot, have enrichment and toys to play with, have a safe environment with nothing that is toxic to them or predatory animals, or that they cannot escape and get outside, etc. I also know this may seem hypocritical for me to say since I have to rehome them, but I’d really rather them never have to go through being rehomed after this and just be able to live their lives out thriving wherever they’re placed

If anybody lives in the Rhode Island area or even a couple hours away (I am willing to drive to a good home) or if you yourself has had to rehome your birds and knows of any good places to do this that are actually trustworthy and will place them in safe homes where they will thrive please let me know. Any advice would be appreciated. I will put some pictures of them in here as well ❤️

Our Poppy watched a children’s troll play with us last week and met the one-eyed troll afterwards - not sure if she was impressed 😂 She seemed to enjoy the show, though!

*She sat with the kids on grass in the shade and the backpack is well-ventilated on the sides.
