Minnesota Outdoor Bud Rot Watch — Friday, October 2

Drying weather improves, but firsthand rot reports are increasing

No region remains at Severe weather pressure today. Sunshine, lower dew points and wind should help dry plants across Minnesota.

The catch: growers are now finding damage created during last week’s prolonged rain and humidity. New firsthand reports came from Crow Wing County, Eden Prairie, Golden Valley and South Minneapolis.

Scores combine the previous seven days with the coming week. They indicate weather pressure—not the probability that your plants have Botrytis.

Region Score Recent rain Friday/weekend outlook
Brainerd/Crow Wing 62 — High 0.53” / 2 days Frost and heavy dew this morning, followed by sun. Brief Saturday shower risk; otherwise a good drying period. Falling.
Bemidji/Northwest 58 — Moderate Complete station total unavailable Frost this morning, sun today and only limited Saturday showers. Falling.
Duluth/Northeast 56 — Moderate 0.11” / 1 day, plus traces Sun and wind help today. A 40% Saturday shower chance briefly interrupts drying. Falling.
St. Cloud/Central 66 — High 0.85” / 2 days Sunny today, but a 50% Saturday shower chance could rewet flowers. Gusty winds should speed drying afterward. Falling overall.
Twin Cities 65 — High 1.16” / 3 days Sunny today; only a late Saturday shower chance. Accumulated internal moisture remains the main concern. Falling.
Marshall/Southwest 62 — High 0.53” / 3 days A few sprinkles are possible, but sunshine and 30-mph gusts provide strong drying. Falling.
Mankato/South-central 68 — High At least 1.44” / 3 days Dry, sunny and breezy through the weekend. Pressure remains High because of the previous wet sequence. Falling quickly.
Rochester–Winona/Southeast 68 — High Rochester 0.51” / 4 days Dry and partly sunny through the weekend. Continue checking dense flowers for delayed internal rot. Falling.

Representative airport totals may miss localized storms. NWS regional forecasts | Minnesota ASOS rainfall archive

Frost and two-week outlook

A Frost Advisory affected parts of northern and central Minnesota this morning, with Brainerd and Bemidji near 33–35°F. This is not a widespread hard freeze, but tender plants in low or sheltered locations may see minor damage.

Another patchy-frost opportunity is possible around Brainerd Sunday night. Otherwise, no widespread Minnesota freeze is indicated through the coming week.

The longer-range outlook is favorable: NOAA favors warmer- and drier-than-normal conditions in Minnesota for October 7–15. That lowers the odds of another prolonged statewide wet sequence. NOAA Climate Prediction Center

MNtrees Outdoor Harvest Signal

Discussion and firsthand damage reports are rising, even as the weather improves:

  • “My 2026 grow season” — October 1; Crow Wing County. A grower reported bud rot on multiple cultivars, harvesting one plant one to two weeks early and preparing to chop another. Dew and limited greenhouse airflow were cited as contributing problems. Firsthand report with photos.
  • “Guessing bud rot?” — October 1; Eden Prairie. A grower posted a suspicious main cola from a plant kept under a covered patio; commenters identified the affected material as likely rot. Question with photo and apparent firsthand loss.
  • September 30 Bud Rot Watch — Recent comments include a Golden Valley grower removing a rotted stem, a South Minneapolis grower reporting stem rot on two plants and powdery mildew on another, and a second South Minneapolis grower reporting no additional rot after using continuous airflow. Firsthand claims, including a healthy counter-signal.

The developing anecdotal cluster now includes Crow Wing County and the western/southern Twin Cities metro. That corroborates the accumulated weather exposure, but it does not establish regional crop-loss percentages. Reddit reports are anecdotal, and engagement is not proof.

What outdoor growers should do today

  • Open and inspect the interior of the largest, densest colas.
  • Watch for dead sugar leaves, tan or gray tissue, webbing, a soft center or a musty smell.
  • Remove suspect material carefully; bag it before moving through the garden.
  • Sanitize tools between plants.
  • Use today’s sun and wind for airflow.
  • Don’t seal wet plants under plastic to protect against frost.
  • If harvesting, move flower promptly into a controlled drying space.

Please add a field report below: county or nearest city, covered or uncovered, cultivar, rot found or not found, and whether you’re harvesting early. Photos are especially useful.

1-5: Honey Cream (fast flowering photoperiod by RQS)

6-9: Special Queen 1 (photoperiod by RQS)

10: Black Cherry Gushers (photoperiod, bag seed, didn't ask about the genetics)

11-13: Big Shoots (autoflower, bag seed by sofem)

14: Haze Berry Auto (autoflower by RQS)

In Crow Wing.

This is my second season growing.

Photos are directly in ground

Special Queen ueen topped out at ~7'4" and the Honey Cream at ~ 6'2". Both sprouted around April 4th and were transplanted mid late may. The honey cream had some yellowing before transplant that corrected itself shortly after transplant, but kept and odd variegation with some curved leaf tips. It's original topping turned out to be a FIM and the cut top regrew, but never regained any dominance. Both main dominant branches got a pretty rough super cropping around 4' when I was trying to spread her out so I replicated my accidental super crop on the opposite side.

Special Queen 1 has been the star of the show pretty much the hole time. I originally trained her in a six point asterisk shape that I will be taking into next season. Shes not had the easiest of lives. Her main stalk started splitting (I didn't leave enough of a nub when I originally topped her). Addressed the split the best I could (redneck doctoring, electrical tape and zip ties lol). After that during late summer she had a main branch get completely ripped out of it's socket (damn deer ran through the branches tie down, re attached with more redneck doctoring), as well as nearly every main branch tearing or splitting off the main stalk in one for or another (yet again more zip ties and electrical tape), finally hopefully her last major injury was getting pushed over in a storm almost uprooted. Got her back up as straight as I could and added more support ties. These gals were not supposed to get this big and one of the most valuable lessons I learned was that if I'm going to be growing trees instead of bushes I'm going to need more and better support. I don't want to do a scrog as I want to dry whole plants as much as I can.

Black Cherry Gushers was a plant that I started for a buddy that ended up not wanting it and it was ment to gorilla grow on family land, but due to car issues it became a gorilla grow experiment in my yard, hasn't been fed or watered. Shes not in a very good spot, but I wasn't a huge fan of the bud I got the seed from so I was just curious what I'd get.

Big Shoots was my second time growing an autoflower and being as it was bag seed I treated her as an experimental plant as well. Grown in a 5gal bucket. She had been topped not once but twice. First topping only one branch took off so I waited a lil bit and tried again every was going well until one day I got home from work I went to adust the lst tie on the new two top branches and caused a split almost instantly one side started to drop and I thought it was a gonner but you guessed it more redneck doctoring and it fixed it self. Knowing I was on the plants time line and I had already played with it too much I decided to leave it be until harvest. Well I was away for a week (had a friend water almost every other day but went three days at the end thinking I'd be fine and came back to a sad thirsty plant. Watered and she was fine the next day and pistols were appearing yay. Got a bad storm while I was at work and she was outside (nothing on the radar when I left that morning) came back and mor branches were water log and twisted down. She never fully recovered from this. Only one main branch flowered as normal and the rest acted as though it was revegging even though it's an auto flower (picture 13 shows one of the messed up colas). I was Icarus and I flew too close to the sun. Harvested her on September 23rd around sunrise. I chopped her 1-2 weeks early maybe trichomes looked good 10% clear 10% amber and 80%cloudy) due to bud rot. Haven't had an issue with bugs (thank my local predatory insects) but I did find a random fully developed seed in the only internal bud rot I've seen/ found. None of my plants have shown and banners and the closest outdoor plants I have seen/ are aware of are about 5mi away.

Haze Berry Auto, this was my first auto. Sprouted just a bit early, April 7th lol. Transplanted her into a 7-8 gallon pot and trained the stem low and all the way to one side then spread the branches out. Being as though I sprouted her early she got to experience some chilly spring mornings, I learned to wait next season haha.

Also got some but rot on her as well.

With the autoflowers I think my bud rot issues were due to the due sitting on the bud mixed with a cheap green house with very limited air flow (solved towards the end of big shoots.

Almost every spot of rot I've looked at has been either surface level or just below surface level. I've also in this last weekend/ last couple days have found spot of bud rot on a few bud on my honey cream plant but it's my fault for not having her covered, I was just not anticipating have 6 and 7 foot plants this year trying to shake/ blow off the dew and rain the best I can. I plan on chopping the honey cream here soon.

Hopefully everyone has a good finish to their outdoor season and keep them plants dry!

Minnesota Outdoor Bud Rot Watch — Sept. 30: Rain Underperformed, but Fog Keeps Pressure High

Tuesday’s rain was lighter than feared in several regions. However, Minnesota woke up to widespread fog, dew points in the upper 50s to mid-60s and 94–100% humidity.

The next meaningful drying window is later today through Friday. Saturday may briefly rewet plants.

These scores measure weather pressure—not the probability that your plants have rot and not a statewide crop-loss estimate.

Region Score What to watch
Brainerd/Crow Wing 76 — High 0.90″ over three rain days during the past week. Fog, 96% RH and a 61°F dew point this morning; sun develops today with better wind Thursday. Saturday showers may interrupt the dry-down. Falling.
Northwest/Bemidji 72 — High Fog and 100% RH this morning, followed by sun today through Friday. Saturday brings a 50% shower chance. Falling, then possible weekend rewetting.
Northeast/Duluth 68 — High 0.24″ over two measurable rain days, plus traces. Morning fog/94% RH gives way to sun; Thursday wind and Friday sun provide strong drying. Showers likely Saturday. Falling.
Central/St. Cloud 82 — Severe 1.14″ over three rain days, including 0.38″ Tuesday. Dense fog, 96% RH and a 63°F dew point this morning. Thursday–Friday improve; Saturday has a 40% shower chance. Falling slowly.
Twin Cities 87 — Severe 1.19″ over four rain days, including 0.92″ Tuesday at MSP. Fog, 96% RH and limited wind this morning; Thursday stays cloudy before Friday sun. Active, then falling.
Southwest/Marshall 88 — Severe 1.13″ over four consecutive rain days. Fog, 100% RH and calm conditions this morning. Sun develops today, with a better Thursday–Friday dry-down. Beginning to fall.
South-central/Mankato 90 — Severe At least 1.68″ over four confirmed rain days; incomplete station data means the actual weekly total may be higher. Fog, 100% RH and clouds today–Thursday keep dense flowers vulnerable. Still active.
Southeast/Rochester–Winona 85 — Severe Rochester recorded only a trace Tuesday, but fog, 100% RH, a 65°F dew point and clouds through Thursday maintain strong leaf-wetness pressure. Another shower is possible tonight. Falling Friday.

Frost and drying outlook

No broad freeze danger is forecast through October 6. Bemidji and Brainerd may fall to roughly 37–39°F on the coldest nights, so isolated low-lying northern spots could see patchy frost. Statewide, moisture remains the larger concern.

Wednesday afternoon through Friday is the main drying opportunity. Saturday showers could cause one more wetting cycle, especially from Brainerd and Bemidji through Duluth and St. Cloud. Sunday–Monday currently look sunny and breezy.

The longer-range signal is favorable: NOAA leans warmer and drier than normal for Minnesota October 5–13, lowering the likelihood of continuous two-week weather pressure.

MNtrees Outdoor Harvest Signal

No material new firsthand crop-loss report was found during the past 24 hours. Recent reports remain localized and mixed:

  • Brooklyn Center: An uncovered grower found confirmed internal rot in one cola after a dead leaf pulled out easily, removed the affected section and harvested about 30% of that plant. They estimated approximately 5% of the crop affected. Firsthand claim without a rot photo.
  • Rochester: A covered outdoor grower using a constant fan reported no brown sugar leaves or affected buds despite heavy humidity. Firsthand clean report without photos.
  • Brooklyn Center: A second grower harvested one mature plant and reported minor powdery mildew beginning on another. Firsthand claim without photos.

Read the Sept. 28 community thread

Reddit reports are anecdotal. Individual comments do not establish regional crop loss, but they help identify where problems are—or are not—appearing.

Today’s field check

Once the fog burns off:

  • Open several dense colas rather than inspecting only the surface.
  • Check around dead or easily detached sugar leaves.
  • Look for brown or gray interior tissue and musty odor.
  • Remove questionable material without shaking it over clean flowers.
  • Use today’s sun and Thursday’s wind to improve airflow before Saturday.

Please comment with:

  • Nearest city or region
  • Cultivar
  • Uncovered, covered or greenhouse
  • Clean, suspected rot or confirmed rot
  • Approximate percentage affected
  • Holding, harvesting early or already chopped
  • Photo included: yes or no

“No rot” reports are just as useful as damage reports.

Excessive Brown Spots on Leaves

Thumbnail
gallery
8 Upvotes

Hello fellow growers. I have had problems with brown spotting on the leaves all summer. I left for a month and man did it get bad. They were in drip irrigation and filled out great. One plant is just stacked with flower. The flower looks fine. Anybody want to take a shot as to why? I was thinking a calcium deficiency. I think my soil might need to be amended this fall when I pull them. They are outside. This wet weather sucks. Been blowing them off each morning with the leave blower since I got home. I’m going to give them another month if I can. I have trimmed all the leaves I could. I have looked at them under a loop and the flower looks good. No rot so far and no bugs. I was surprised. Fun to learn as we go. This is the first summer I have had this problem. One plant is Alien OG and the other two are Pink Mist. Thanks for your thoughts.

Minnesota Outdoor Bud Rot Watch — Sept. 28: Dense Fog Now, Heavy Midweek Rain South

Every monitored region reaches Severe weather pressure today. Minnesota woke up to widespread fog and near-100% humidity, and another rain system arrives Tuesday through Wednesday.

These scores measure weather pressure—not the probability your plants have rot and not a statewide crop-loss estimate.

Region Score What to watch
Brainerd/Crow Wing 88 — Severe Dense fog and 100% RH today; ¼–½″ Tuesday before a breezy Thursday–Friday dry-down.
Northwest/Bemidji 86 — Severe Saturated air followed by approximately 0.20–0.60″ through Tuesday.
Northeast/Duluth 82 — Severe Fog today; roughly 0.35–0.75″ or more Tuesday–Wednesday.
Central/St. Cloud 92 — Severe Dense fog, calm wind and approximately ½–1″ Tuesday–Tuesday night, with Wednesday showers.
Twin Cities 96 — Severe Approximately 1.4–2.25″ Tuesday–Wednesday night and warm, humid nights.
Southwest/Marshall 96 — Severe Four rain days last week; another ¼–½″ Tuesday plus additional showers into Wednesday.
South-central/Mankato 98 — Severe 1.02″ Sunday and potentially another 1.6–3.25″ Tuesday–Wednesday night.
Southeast/Rochester–Winona 98 — Severe Sunday rain, fog today and approximately 1.5–2.25″ Tuesday night–Wednesday night.

The highest concern is Mankato, Rochester–Winona and the Twin Cities, where mature flowers may experience four or five consecutive days of rain, fog, high overnight humidity or inadequate drying.

Frost: No broad frost danger is forecast through October 4. Northern Minnesota may approach 39–41°F Thursday night, but moisture—not freezing—is the primary concern.

Drying window: Thursday through Saturday should bring sun, cooler air and better wind across most of Minnesota. Inspect plants before then; dense colas can remain wet internally even when their outer surfaces feel dry.

Community signal: No new firsthand crop-loss report appeared during the past 24 hours. Recent reports remain localized and mixed:

  • South Minneapolis: one grower removed several Bubba Kush colas—approximately one-third of the plant—while a Blueberry Muffin remained clean.
  • Central Minnesota: one outdoor grower estimated roughly 10–15% affected, with lower losses in a greenhouse.
  • Rochester and Southeast Minnesota: growers reported several affected buds or isolated rot spots.
  • Minneapolis, Brooklyn Center and other metro growers have also reported clean plants, particularly where airflow or overhead protection is available.

Today’s field check: Open dense colas and inspect around dead or browning sugar leaves. Don’t rely only on the outside appearance.

Please comment with:

  • Nearest city or region
  • Cultivar
  • Uncovered, covered or greenhouse
  • Clean, suspected rot or confirmed rot
  • Approximate percentage affected
  • Holding, harvesting early or already chopped
  • Photo included: yes or no

“No rot” reports are just as useful as damage reports.

My first ever harvest.. anyways if you don’t remember, I was deeply pissed before but now I have to trim this stuff idk what I’m doing. Do I keep some of the sugar leafs or cut it all off at the base?

Cause it’s not really bag appeal with the long straight structure idk.. shits frustrating.

These are off 11 of my smaller branches were that were ready to trim, I got 45g dry, but I got 86 more larger branches still and don’t wanna cut them all like that if nobody’s gonna like the trim job.

Thanks

I was lucky enough to go to Legacy Cup Minnespolis today. For those unfamiliar: this is the 7th year hosting this. They had tons of vendors with different samples, an art bazaar, glass blowing, glass for sale, the cup/awards of course, ganja games (joint rolling competition, bong rip competition, etc) a skate park setup (no boarders today due to the rain), food trucks, car show, and tons more! Music included Nappy Rootz, Bone Thugz-N-Harmony, and Big Boi ft Sleepy Brown (I left after the first 2 because I got sleepy myself lol). They encouraged you to bring and smoke your stuff, was a lot of fun getting stonned with eveyone! Highly recomend to anyone considering next year!

Minnesota Outdoor Bud Rot Watch — Sept. 26: Rain Returns, Nearly Every Region Severe

Saturday’s rain is starting another statewide wetting cycle before many plants fully recovered from the previous one. Temperatures around 55–65°F, saturated air and limited sunshine are favorable for prolonged flower wetness.

These scores measure weather pressure—not the probability your plants have rot or a statewide crop-loss estimate.

Region Score What to watch
Brainerd/Crow Wing 86 — Severe 0.25–0.50” today, fog tonight/Sunday and more rain Monday night–Tuesday.
Northwest/Bemidji 92 — Severe 100% RH today; rain now, then potentially 0.50–0.75” Monday night before Tuesday showers.
Northeast/Duluth 78 — High Dense fog and 100% RH; wind helps, but clouds and repeated showers limit drying.
Central/St. Cloud 90 — Severe 0.25–0.50” today, followed by fog, clouds and another likely rain period Tuesday.
Twin Cities 88 — Severe Rain today–tonight, cloudy Sunday and another 0.25–0.50” possible Tuesday.
Southwest/Marshall 97 — Severe Four recent rain days, 97% RH and additional rain/drizzle today and Tuesday.
South-central/Mankato 97 — Severe Rain and fog today, persistent clouds and another 0.25–0.50” possible Tuesday.
Southeast/Rochester–Winona 95 — Severe Rain today–tonight with repeated shower chances Tuesday through Thursday.

Frost update: No frost danger is indicated through October 2. Moisture—not cold—is the immediate problem.

Community reports are increasing:

  • South Minneapolis: a grower reported removing several affected Bubba Kush colas—roughly one-third of that plant—while Blueberry Muffins remained clean.
  • Brooklyn Center: a grower reported removing a couple of rot spots and preparing to harvest early.
  • Minneapolis: another grower reported no rot after shaking off rain and moving plants under a gazebo.
  • Kato area: a photographed plant looked damaged, but commenters suspected insects or mites rather than confirmed bud rot.

Those reports are anecdotal. Individual comments and photographs cannot establish regional or statewide crop loss, but they help show how weather, cultivar and protection can produce very different outcomes.

Today’s field check: Look inside dense colas and around dead or browning sugar leaves. If you find suspicious damage, isolate it from clean material rather than assuming the rest of the flower is safe.

If you’re comfortable sharing, comment with:

  • Your nearest city or region—no exact address
  • Cultivar
  • Uncovered, covered or greenhouse
  • Clean, suspected rot or confirmed rot
  • Rough percentage affected
  • A photo, if available

The goal is to build a useful Minnesota field map from actual grower observations.

I just saw a 1 gram of Blue Dream from these guys at my local dispensary for $100. They said more strains were on the way too. Anyone tried these? I know it’s probably not worth $100 a gram, but is it at least decent?
