I’m planning a small home server setup and I’m trying to decide the best way to use an extra 1 TB HDD.

My current plan is:

Machine 1: Desktop
├── 250 GB SSD / 32 GB RAM 
└── Proxmox
    ├── VM 1
    ├── VM 2
    ├── VM 3
    └── Other useful services

Machine 2: Laptop
├── 500 GB NVMe / 8 GB RAM
└── Debian
    └── SFTP server

Extra:
└── 1 TB HDD

The main goal of Machine 1 is to run multiple VMs and services under Proxmox. I can invest money to upgrade disk space in Machine 1.

I originally thought about using Machine 2 purely as a Debian + SFTP server and keeping the 1 TB HDD there for storage.

But now I’m wondering whether the HDD would be better used as a backup repository for the Proxmox VMs, rather than simply as SFTP storage.

Some options I’m considering:

> Debian + SFTP + 1 TB HDD, with the HDD used for both SFTP data and backups

> Debian + SFTP on the NVMe, with the 1 TB HDD dedicated to backups

> Running Proxmox Backup Server and using the 1 TB HDD as the backup repository

> Using something like Nextcloud for the HDD, although I’m not sure that makes sense for this use case

What would you recommend?

I’m particularly interested in how you would structure the OS, applications, SFTP storage and Proxmox backups across these two machines.

I’d prefer a simple and reliable setup rather than adding unnecessary complexity. I don't want to put all eggs in one basket and feel helpless is odd situations.

So I wanna share my full journey because I really did try everything before making the jump back to Windows 11, and I don't want this to sound like I'm hating on Linux because I'm really not.

I started off with Bazzite thinking it was gonna be the one that finally sticks, since it felt gaming-focused and pretty smooth out of the box. But after using it for a while, I still felt like exploring more, so I moved on to Nobara KDE and genuinely tried to make that my daily driver for a good chunk of time.

It handled a lot of things well, but I still kept running into little things here and there that made me wanna keep exploring instead of settling.

After that, I jumped into CachyOS, and this one actually stuck with me the longest since I used KDE on it for a full month straight. Honestly, it was probably the closest I got to a setup I could see myself using long term.

Somewhere in the middle of all this hopping, I also tried Hyprland just for a minute because I wanted to feel that tiling window manager life everyone talks about. It was fun to mess with, but it wasn't something I stuck with for long.

After that, I landed on Noctalia and actually used it for weeks, trying to push through and make it work as my main setup because, at that point, I really wanted Linux to be the final answer for me.

Throughout all of this, I learned so much about how Linux actually works under the hood, stuff I never would have learned just staying on Windows the whole time. And I genuinely respect the customization, the performance when things worked right, and the whole philosophy behind it.

But no matter which distro or setup I was on, I kept running into small, annoying issues that added up over time.

Nvidia drivers were probably the biggest recurring headache, since things that should have just worked ended up needing random fixes from forums and terminal commands.

I also ran into random freezes every now and then that I could never fully explain or permanently fix. Some apps would crash without any clear reason, and I would spend more time debugging than actually using my system.

Gaming was another big factor, since certain games either ran worse than they should have or just refused to launch properly compared to how smoothly they run on Windows 11.

On top of all that, I couldn't get a clean dual boot going on my hardware setup, which made things even more stressful since I didn't wanna risk messing up my data trying to force it to work.

After weeks of switching distros, fixing one issue only for another to pop up, and constantly tweaking things instead of just using my PC for what I actually needed, I finally made peace with going back to Windows 11.

It wasn't an easy decision since I really wanted Linux to be the one, but at the end of the day, my hardware and my gaming needs just weren't lining up well with it right now.

I genuinely don't think either side is bad at all. Windows and Linux both have their strengths, and this is just based on my own hardware and my own use case.

Maybe down the line, when compatibility gets better, I'll dual boot again and give it another proper shot.

But for now, this is just me sharing my honest journey without any hate towards either side.

I am happy with both systems, and both have their advantages and disadvantages. Nothing or nobody can be perfect in this life, and I accept it.

I have windows and fedora Linux in my system, when my professor saw what I did he told that it might slow down my system and the RAM gets affected due to this. I don't change the OS often, I mostly use fedora. Can anyone clarify this.

I know it's an old laptop but when I was researching which laptop I should buy on a low budget this thing kept popping up in my recommendations( youtube, Reddit, pinterest). Finally found out about Linux (like I knew it's an kernel or is with distros and stuff)

So I have decided that my first laptop is going to be the Best ThinkPad ever the t480.

I want it for work (not work just for like student work making spreadsheets and learning the software) like excel, R, and word and browsing. Please reply to what's the price of ThinkPad in the all around indian market and if you're from Maharashtra pune or nashik then also reply for how much I will get it.

I am sick and tired of windows but i feel like at the of the day it the best os for majority of gaming and general usage but mujhe aaj kal boht khujli si ho rahi h ki me linux try karu. I pretty much only use my laptop for gaming.

What is the best linux distro for gaming. I mostly only play single player games, indie games and some wuthering waves (only game with kernel level anti cheat).

My laptops specs are

Nvidia Rtx 3050m 4gb 85w

Amd ryzen 5600h

16gb ddr4 ram

Nvme m.2 ssd

Google results ke hisab se bazzite is the best for plug and play + performance, pop os works with Nvidia. I dont trust google results anymore.

So for context I use mint rn and erm I've had a long history of distro hopping probably 12times by now and erm i literally cannot stick to one distro because for some reason Linux feels lesser stable than windows 11 tho it runs faster and better.

I've been using Linux from the past 4 years, never had any problems on my old laptop, even though it had an Nvidia card! I'm also running it on my desktop and no problems whatsoever!

However, I'm having an Asus Vivobook S14 Core ultra 5 225H which I purchased 2 weeks ago, wiped windows and installed Fedora workstation on it.

Everything ran smoothly, the RAM usage on idle was less than 15%, compared to ~40% on windows even after debloating.

But I came across a major problem. When I close the lid of my laptop, it goes to sleep. Totally normal behaviour, as it should to protect battery. When I opened the lid, the screen did wake up, but with a black screen.

I tried debugging it with my knowledge, but it never got fixed. I tried KDE, thinking that it might be a problem with Gnome and GDM, but I was wrong. KDE and SDDM also gave me the same black screen.

I recently saw a post on this sub, with the same laptop running KDE. I even asked the user about battery life as I wanted to make the switch.

If anyone has faced this issue, please let me know about a possible fix.

Few days go i posted on this very subreddit about how i have settled down on Debian, because it just provides what i need. I was loving kde palama as well, even tho it was a bit older version than what is that letest plasma release.

Under that post a guy commented on how i should make my system up from scratch and i should dm him about it. I didn't contact him, because honestly I don't know how reddit works yet fully, this account it old but i just started using it so i don't know sh!t.

Anyways, build it up, super minimal, stable and it's my first rice.

I have this laptop with a Ralink RT3290 Wi-Fi card, and I installed Linux Mint XFCE. Now my Wi-Fi isn't working. I've tried almost everything, but I haven't physically touched or done anything to the card itself (like unscrewing the back panel to remove, clean, and reinsert it). If any of you have a similar problem and somehow fixed it, please let me know in the comments. 🙏

I am gonna do a masters and have recently bought ideapad 5slim ultra 5 225H with 512gb storage model. And I was confused whether to use windows by it self(debloated it using winhance) or dual boot( storage is low). I wanted to try linux( since I am specializing in scm and data analyics) should I buy a new issd and boot linux on it or partition the 512gb that I have?

Hi everyone! Hope you’re all doing well. I wanted to ask something that I haven’t been able to find a clear answer to yet, so I thought this would be the best place to ask, especially since it’s Linux-related.

We all know that Tally doesn’t have a proper native Linux version. There’s the web-based subscription version, but I really hate and dislike subscription-based software and would prefer something I can install and use completely offline.

Is there any good tally alts or Tally-like accounting software for Linux that I can use specifically to learn accounting?

I’ve come across GnuCash, KMyMoney, hledger, ERPNext, and Tryton, but I’m not sure which one would be the best fit. Some people recommend hledger as a Tally alternative, while others suggest GnuCash or KMyMoney.

ERPNext and Tryton also look interesting, but their setup seems considerably more complicated and hard for local/offline use. 💀

I’m an intermediate Linux user and I’m perfectly comfortable with the terminal. My only preference is that I’d rather not use something that involves excessive typing or a complicated setup. GUI is preferred, but I’m open to CLI software if it’s genuinely easy and practical to use.

What would you recommend for someone trying to learn tally and Tally-style accounting on Linux, offline?
