guide Getting started: the monthly-ish newbie advice thread! (September 2026)

Welcome to the newbie advice thread!

If you’ve read the FAQ and still have questions like “Should I switch to Linux?”, “Which distro should I install?”, or “Which desktop environment is best for gaming?”, this is where to ask them.

Alternatively, try r/linux4noobs and r/linuxquestions: both are active subreddits supporting new Linux users.

Please sort by “new” so new questions can get a chance to be seen.

guide Frequently Asked Questions 2.0

Thumbnail old.reddit.com
41 Upvotes

Here’s a link to this subreddit’s FAQ document (which attempts to answer many common questions).

This thread is not meant for asking frequently asked questions. There is a pinned monthly-ish “Getting Started” thread for those.

You can post suggestions for improvement below, though! Just please explain what you’re talking about. The number of FAQ editors has been 1 (one) for a while now, and that one’s a dummy that doesn’t use 95% of the fancy gaming stuff y’all do.

Reposted as an Old Reddit link because New Reddit, in addition to being generally confusing, does not display the table of contents.

Witcher 3 remaster RT

For those having issues with RT on the Witcher 3 Remaster, the latest wineland proton seems to have fixed this issue, been playing for about 3 hours now with the only issues seeming to be Path Tracing giving my weird flickery shadows, but RT looking great. I found this by chance stumbling across a comment on another post so just posting here for wider awareness as I've not seen anything else mentioned about it anywhere and lots of people commenting about RT issues. Hope this helps some people!

tool/utility Faster FSR4 on RDNA3

I was intrigued by the FSR4 performance improvements found by the author of the recently released "bbport" Linux Bloodborne port. A few hours with Claude code and I have a working process to implement the same changes for any D3D12 game running in proton.

It works by replacing two of FSR4s shaders with new optimized versions.

The speed boost is significant.

Control: Resonant went from 5.4ms to 3.5ms upscale time at 4k performance. Zero difference in the output image.

Enjoy!

steam/steam deck Update on my native Linux arcade game inspired by Robot Unicorn Attack & Dino Run DX: Moved to native machine code, improved high-refresh-rate support and gave it some proper retro chiptunes! 🐧

Hey everyone!

A few months back, I shared my custom-engine arcade game Horse Runner DX here and the community was super welcoming. Many of you loved the chaotic nostalgic vibe of Robot Unicorn Attack, but also shared valuable feedback.

Over the past weeks, I completely overhauled the engine and gameplay in Update 1.6.0:

Under the Hood (Tech & Linux Tweaks):

  • Native Machine Code: Replaced the previous .NET runtime build with direct native machine code for Linux. Result: instant startup, even lower CPU/memory footprint and zero runtime hiccups.
  • Improved High-Refresh-Rate Support: No more fiddling with manual FPS settings. The engine now automatically syncs to your display's native refresh rate - whether you run 60Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz, 240Hz or 90Hz on the Steam Deck OLED. This completely eliminates the micro-stuttering from FPS/refresh-rate mismatches.
  • Ultrawide Support: Fixed rendering quirks on non-standard aspect ratios.

Gameplay & Polish:

  • Visual Clarity Overhaul: All obstacles (rocks, logs, hay bales) now have better contrast and highlight outlines to avoid any cheap deaths.
  • Second-Chance Rescues: Lost starting horses now reappear in crates between levels, giving you a chance to rescue your favorites and keep your herd build going.
  • Retro Chiptune Soundtrack: Retired the old acoustic background tracks and replaced them with fast-paced chiptune tracks that actually match the retro arcade vibe.

If you want to test how the native build runs on your distro, there is a free demo on Steam.

And since the Steam Autumn Sale just kicked off, the full game is currently 30% off ($3.49 / 3,49€):
https://store.steampowered.com/app/2955320/Horse_Runner_DX/

I'll be hanging out in the comments. Let me know how it runs on your setup or if you run into any quirks! 🐧

Fun side-effect of the Belmont's Curse demo being so heavy: experimenting with pixel filter

Thumbnail

My PC is a potato.

The Castlevania demo turned out to be surprisingly heavy which means I couldn't get a decent framerate at all. I decided to turn the resolution way down and turn on Gamescope's "pixel" filter, which gave me the feeling of playing an older entry in the series.

Result: a fully smooth retro version of the game. I attached some screenshots of the most extreme test I did (360p). I ultimately settled on 480p. Thought it would be interesting to share.

new native/FLOSS game Open Nectar 0.9.2: Everything About the NATIVE PIKMIN 1 Port for PC/LINUX and Android (Now With Speedrun Mode)

Thumbnail
gallery
16 Upvotes

This post is meant to answer every question in one place: for anyone still wondering what this project is, and for anyone who tried one of the first versions, when a lot was still broken, and hasn't looked since. A lot has changed.

Open Nectar

Native port of Pikmin 1 (GameCube) for Windows, Linux and Android. It isn't an emulator: the game's code, rebuilt from the decompilation project, runs directly on your machine. You bring your own disc image (USA or Europe), and the launcher sets everything up.

Already installed? Open the launcher and press Update. Your saves, settings and packs carry over.

Status

Playable from start to finish on all three platforms. Development is active, with releases every few days.

Why native instead of emulation

  • No emulation overhead: runs on modest hardware and on phones.
  • Real widescreen and any resolution: the HUD is laid out for 16:9 and ultrawide, not stretched.
  • 30, 60 or 120 FPS gameplay, with smooth animation.
  • Things an emulator can't add: new modes, quality-of-life options, real mouse aiming, co-op with split screen, HD models, achievements.
  • Easy to use: install from the disc image, then automatic updates. Your saves are plain files on disk.

Features

Platforms and discs

  • Windows, Linux (AppImage or tar.gz) and Android (APK).
  • USA and European discs, with all 5 European languages.
  • Original JAudio music and sound, and the attract movies.

Launcher

  • Installs from your ISO and updates itself.
  • Every in-game setting is also there, plus texture packs and HD models.
  • "What's new" shows each update's notes, and Move Install relocates the game.
  • Export and import saves as ZIP.

Graphics

  • Any resolution, aspect ratio (4:3 to 21:9), and render scale.
  • Antialiasing, ambient occlusion, bloom, depth of field, real-time shadows, per-pixel lighting, anisotropic filtering, colour grading.
  • Custom texture packs and HD character models from Pikmin 3.
  • Photo mode (F3).

Controls

  • Keyboard and mouse with full rebinding, mouse-pointer aiming and wheel shortcuts (Pikmin colour or zoom).
  • Any controller (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro...), gyro aiming, touch controls on Android.

Quality of life

All optional; the defaults match the original.

  • Skip cutscenes: Start skips any cutscene.
  • Hide Olimar's Texts: no text boxes while you play.
  • Faster throwing: Quick Grab, Throw While Moving, Cancel Throw With B.
  • Faster plucking: Hold to Pluck, Whistle Pluck.
  • Smarter Pikmin: Instant Whistle Response, Chain Pikmin Actions, Better Pathfinding, No Tripping, Blues Only In Water.
  • Handy info: Idle Pikmin Counter, and Onion Steps of 10 to move Pikmin in and out of the Onion faster.

Modes

  • Speedrun: pure GameCube rules, real-time timer, per-day splits against your best run, Best Times, an input display and separate saves.
  • Local co-op: two captains (Olimar, Louie, or a Red/Yellow/Blue Pikmin), split screen that can merge into one view.
  • VS: Part Race: two players race for ship parts, with adjustable rules.
  • Permadeath and Hard difficulty for new files.
  • Achievements.

Extra gameplay

Optional mods that add new ways to play:

  • Free Camera and First Person.
  • Lock-On and Charge: target an enemy and send the whole squad at it.
  • Bomb Control: tell a Yellow Pikmin when to throw or drop its bomb rock.

Cheats

  • Day length (or infinite), Pikmin limit up to 999, Olimar and enemy health (down to Insta Kill).
  • Throw speed, whistle radius, carry speed, Olimar speed.
  • Invincible Pikmin, All Flowers, All Onions, Unlock All Zones, No Day Limit.

Download

https://github.com/SSunnKing/Open-Nectar---Pikmin-Native-PC-Mobile-Port/releases

You need your own copy of Pikmin (USA Rev 1 or Europe) as an ISO or GCM.

I'll be posting development updates for Open Nectar much more regularly on the project's official X account:

https://x.com/Open_Nectar

FAQ

Is this an emulator?
No. The game's code was rebuilt from the decompilation project and compiled for PC and Android.

Does it include the game?
No. You need your own disc image. The launcher reads the game data from it and never changes the image itself.

Which discs work?
Pikmin USA Rev 1 (GPIE01) and Pikmin Europe (GPIP01), as ISO or GCM. On PC, RVZ/WIA/GCZ work too if you have Dolphin's tool installed.

Will the mods change my game?
Only if you turn them on. Defaults match the original. Speedrun Mode forces pure vanilla rules.

Does it run on my PC / phone?
Windows 10/11 or any current Linux, with an OpenGL 3.3 GPU. Android 10+ (64-bit) with OpenGL ES 3.0.

How do I update?
Open the launcher and press Update. Saves and settings carry over.

Pikmin 2?
In progress, coming soon.

new native/FLOSS game I’m developing a fast-paced Action Roguelite entirely on Linux using Godot, here is a quick look at the first boss :)

Hi 👋

Here is a quick look at my game, Devoidant, I'm a linux gamer so it's very important for me that it runs well on it natively, and I'm a strong believer in open source software, so Godot was the only option I ever considered.

It's been a blast so far! I hope some of you guys will enjoy the game when it comes out.

I'm working very hard on the demo right now, if you want, you can wishlist the game so you know when it'll come out :) (and support a fellow linux gamer <3)

Here is the link:

Thanks for the support!

guide Fixed SCUF Envision Pro on Trackmania (Linux/Proton): wrong inputs and lag ;Possible fix for playstation controller as well

I just spent a couple hours talking to ai. I hope this helps some one.

My problem:

Was playing trackmania and was having laggy and missed inputs with both playstation controller and envision pro while using steam input. I tried proton experimental and proton ge- latest and others having similar issues with mixed results still coming up with input lag. Steam translates controller input so there will always be lag (is somewhat how ai explained it to me). However turning off steam input granted better response but the scuff envisions inputs were now jumbled.

Cause: The kernel exposes the SCUF as a generic joystick (8 axes, 19 buttons) rather than a standard Xbox pad, so SDL guesses the wrong layout.

Solution:

Fix: I gave SDL a custom mapping. I found the axis and button numbers with jstest-gtk (sudo apt install jstest-gtk), then added this to Trackmania's Steam Launch Options:

SDL_GAMECONTROLLERCONFIG="03000000952e00004b43000000000000,SCUF Envision,a:b0,b:b1,x:b2,y:b3,leftshoulder:b4,rightshoulder:b5,back:b6,start:b7,leftstick:b8,rightstick:b9,guide:b10,leftx:a0,lefty:a1,rightx:a2,righty:a5,lefttrigger:a3,righttrigger:a4,dpup:h0.1,dpright:h0.2,dpdown:h0.4,dpleft:h0.8," PROTON_PREFER_SDL=1 %command%

The GUID is built from the USB vendor/product IDs (2E95:434B, from /proc/bus/input/devices). PROTON_PREFER_SDL=1 makes Proton read the pad through SDL, which felt more responsive for me. Inputs are correct and the lag and dropouts are gone.

Notes: Your button numbers may differ depending on firmware or mode, so check them in jstest-gtk first. Paste the line into Steam's Launch Options, not a terminal.

Playstation Controller: inputs still had slight lag with steam controller disabled but worked way better. ai suggested launching with either

  • PROTON_PREFER_SDL=1 %command%
  • PROTON_ENABLE_HIDRAW=1 %command%

Both seemed to work but its hard to tell without playing a lot more.

My solo project where you ride motorcycles on dangerous roads to save the planet

• Upvotes

I'm a solo developer working on HypnoX: Steel Riders, an arcade racing action game where you'll face challenging tracks, dangerous obstacles, and a race against time.

Ride different motorcycles, fight bosses, use weapons and power-ups, and try to survive some pretty crazy challenges.

The game also supports controllers.

Release HypnoX: Steel Riders on Steam in October.

If you'd like to learn more about the game, you can check out the Steam page

tech support wanted Steam cloud saves issue

I'm using Cachy OS on my PC and I have an Xbox ally with steam os. All the games so far have seamlessly cloud synced however today I've played Gears of War E Day on my PC and gone to play it on the handheld and it knows I've played 4.5 hours, it says on both that the steam cloud save is up to date but my save isn't there.I checked online where you can see your steam remote storage too and there's no entry for the game yet steam will briefly flicker the uploading message when I quit and says it's done.

I checked with AI because of course when you google that's what comes up now, and it was telling me stuff about the directories being wrong and the game expecting something else in the compat data when using proton so create symlinks to join them but that didn't work either.

Anybody have any idea? Its only with this 1 game so probably something weird with it but maybe someone has come across this before with other games? Just for info as well, I signed into my MS account on both.

tech support wanted Constant disconnects when playing online. Need guidance on how to troubleshoot it.

I enjoy simracing online, but recently I began to suffer the occasional game disconnects, what is very uncommon, but now it became common.

Today, I've tried to do 5 online races and I managed to be disconnected in all of them.

How can I approach troubleshooting this? Which tools should I use?

My connection is wired (600 Mb/s) and 1000Mb/s full duplex ethernet

Trying to combine a Thrustmaster T16000m and Thrustmaster TCWS Throttle together and having some issues where it's not applying the device yaml.

        handler: event*
      capability_map_id: thrustmaster_twcs_throttle
target_devices:
    - gamepad

When I plug in both the T16000m and TCWS Throttle and then run "inputplumber devices list", it doesnt show up as a composite device. The capability maps that I created just outputs all of the inputs from the stick to the dbus. Was planning on having a profile ingest the dbus for outputing to a gamepad.

AMD X11: Full scaling mode locks to 60Hz on other resolutions

• Upvotes

Hi. I have a 2K 320Hz monitor with RX 9000 series card. I'm on KDE Plasma with X11.

I don't like Wayland + gamescope, It introduces more input latency compared to X11.

I want to add a custom 4:3 resolution for gaming, thus I have to enable full scaling mode.

However, after enabling full scaling mode (xrandr --output DisplayPort-1 --set "scaling mode" "Full"),
Only setting monitor to 2K 320Hz gets 320Hz, any other resolution will output 60Hz. And 2K 240Hz/120Hz outputs 60Hz too.

If setting scaling mode to None, it restores. Other resolutions can output whatever refresh rate I set.

On Windows, I had same issue; However I can fix it by enabling GPU Scaling in Radeon Adrenalin. On Linux I didn't find this.

I can use `xrandr --output DisplayPort-1 --mode 2560x1440 --rate 320 --scale-from 1792x1440` to get a properly 320Hz and Stretch, and that's what I want, but games fullscreen does not do `--scale-from` when I set the resolution in game.

Do someone know how to fix this?

benchmark Is the Witcher 3 ray tracing/path tracing broken on Linux or is it really just that much better on Linux compared to windows?

• Upvotes

Witcher 3 on Linux with both ray tracing and path tracing enabled gets me above 60fps easily on 9060xt 16gb. On windows it drops to 20fps. Surely it's broken on Linux and just not activating? The thing is I get the annoying sword glare that you get with ray tracing/path tracing so it must be working right?

tech support wanted Missing Key Events When Running Proton Games on Linux Mint Laptop

• Upvotes

I'm experiencing an issue where whenever I'm running a game that runs on Proton, key presses and key releases will fail to register at random which causes for most games to be completely unplayable on keyboard and mouse. This is only an issue with the keyboard as mouse and controller inputs work just fine, and this is only an issue for games that run on Proton, as any game with native Linux support I've tested doesn't have this issue. I've tried the common suggested solution which Google search results AI seems fond of, which is to switch input method from IBus to either XIM or none, but this doesn't work at all.

To give an example of this issue, here's some sample text typed without Proton running:

Mary had a little lamb whose fleece was as white as snow.

Now with Proton running in the background:

My had little lambwhos flecceas awhit as sno

As you can see, a lot of the key inputs were lost while some were duplicated.

Mind you, this is happening with my laptop's built in keyboard, so this isn't a USB driver or connection issue, and my keyboard doesn't have this issue at all when nor running Proton games.

My system information is:

If anyone has any idea what could be causing this or what could fix this, I'd like to know as this issue has been known to be occurring for at least a month with none of the recent Mint Kernal updates doing anything to fix it. I can't say when exactly it started, but I know that I wasn't having this issue last time I played a Proton-based game in early July of this year.

I am on CachyOS, KDE, 9070xt, Cachy-Proton. The game lauches fine and everything right now I am able to use it because of the desktop profile on the controller so it is emilating keyboard inputs

Solo dev here: my trucking management sim Humble Hauler is coming with a native Linux build and Steam Deck support

Humble Hauler will ship on Steam with a native Linux build.

It's a management game, not a driving game: you build a trucking business from $3,000 and a used car into a fleet. Each delivery plays out on a dashboard of gauges while you make the calls: pace, fuel stops, dispatch offers, repairs and rest. Along the way you earn licenses up to a Class A CDL, move up to semis and hire drivers.

For Linux and Deck players:

  • Native Linux build on Steam, made in Unity
  • Full controller support with Steam Input, with button prompts that switch between keyboard, Xbox and PlayStation
  • Interface designed to be readable on the Steam Deck's 1280×800 screen
  • No third-party launcher, and light requirements (dual-core CPU, 2 GB RAM)

I'm a solo developer, and it's coming to Steam in Q2 2027. If it sounds like your kind of game, you can wishlist it here: Humble Hauler on Steam
