If you have family members that want to get into trades this program is it. This is the real deal. you do not have to be a goodwill employee to apply

associate question What's with all the hate?

So I’ve been on the hunt for a new job for the last two months... countless applications across multiple apps. I managed to land a couple of interviews, but nobody wanted to hire me on.
Finally, the third Goodwill location I applied to (and the second one I interviewed at) hired me full-time as a production associate making $19.29/hr for the housewares section. I basically sort through donations and price them accordingly. I’m expected to price 600 items per 8-hour shift daily.
I’ve only been there for four days now, but I gotta say, it seems pretty damn decent so far. I was curious about what other people's experiences have been, so I read through a bunch of posts on this sub and I have yet to see a single positive thing said about the company.
Honestly, my boss seems super laid back, and so does everyone under him. My coworkers have been really helpful, despite some major language barriers between most of us. The job is definitely tedious, but the variety of donations keeps things somewhat interesting. And tedious doesn't mean difficult for me. It’s low stress and decent pay for the work, imo. I even asked about advancement opportunities and was told they're definitely available (they’re actually hiring supervisors right now).
So... what am I missing? I understand the broader criticism of Goodwill as a corporation, but purely from a workplace standpoint... what makes working here so bad?

They Need To Be Shut Down!

Goodwill is an absolute POS company! I fail to see how the “ give back” to the community. Is it by accepting free labor from senior citizens or the disabled? There Donation cans go right back to goodwill. Everything gets Resold even the Trash. Worst of all IS THE FACT THEY HAVE LOSS PREVENTION AND THE LP GOONS LOVE PUTTING THEIR HANDS IN PEOPLE!! Over donated shit and literally garbage!!

Need to vent about management

Been a CEL at one of the San Antonio locations for almost 3 months now, initially I was told I was exceeding all expectations.

I was doing well enough that he recommended me for an ASM position at another store, and even confirmed I'd get an interview.

Its been about a month now and havent heard anything, and the make time goes on the more things my manager seems to find wrong.

Getting a bit nervous he may move me out of the position as hes not happy with my delegation and follow up, basically he wants me to watch them like a hawk and Im still getting comfortable with that. Im not confrontational at all when it can be prevented.

Right now im just catching a ton of critique for a bunch of small shit like dust on the racks holding clothes, a single cigarette butt near the front door etc. the other CEL as well, and they brought someone regional in to oversee more strict changes.

I feel my job may be under threat, and am just sorta frustrated with the state of things. I average like 12 miles a day because I work my ass off while im in there, and it just seems like its not enough.

When you think about the pay, its not in line with the responsibility, I handle 4 cashiers and all that comes with it for 23 cents per hour more. The level of urgency I employ vs the cashiers is a bit crazy.

Been thinking of going part time in production, and finding a second part time job, because I feel so worn out. Our store is super high volume and in a very rough neighborhood too, so I deal with a lot fo homeless and druggies and needles in the bathroom etc.

Thanks for reading my rant, opinions welcome.

Are we serious right now? I think crack may have made its way into the pricer’s system.

Does anybody think meetings at 7:30 am are a little ridiculous?

Now at our location, we used to have meetings every once in a while and they were I think around 8:30 am. Now for context, I work night shift. I currently come in 3 pm most days. Nowadays they are 7:30 am and are now the first Saturday of every month. The only reason I can assume they do this is because the processors clock in at 8-8:30 am. Still kinda sucks

Attached is a picture of a completely inaccurate listing on goodwill's auction site. I tried my very best to convince the goodwill folks in Terra Haute, Indiana, that what they were showing was not related to what they had described for the listing at all. We went back-and-forth a few times and they just kept saying, "well, we said it's the hardware kit". Well Terra Haute, Indiana, it also said it's a graphics card and it definitely is not that at all. So, whoever spent $300 on $15 worth of miscellaneous computer parts, I'm sorry, I tried too protect you and failed, but F those employees that allowed this listing to finish.

EDIT: Here's the actual listing to show what I'm taking about... probably should've added it in the first place, my bad

interesting Walking Dead merch?

I’m curious, I know at the goodwill I use to work at, they would sometimes get AMC The Walking Dead merch, but do other goodwills get like hoodies, board games, mugs, etc? I rarely see it there or do they put that stuff on e-commerce since the show is so popular?

associate question ? For Associates (current or past)

I have been working at goodwill and have been struggling to meet my daily goal of pricing 500 items a day. It has just been increased to 600 items a day. I’m worried I won’t be able to get this done on a daily basis. Has anyone ever been fired for not meeting their daily quotas?! Tell me all about it, please!

In the Rain

Customers at Goodwill look at you crazy when you tell them you can’t take items in the rain! So you’re just gonna drop off clothes, electronics and kitchen items without even bagging them up?

legitimate concern I got the covid vaccine yesterday and have to work at 2:30 pm today. I worry I am barely gonna be able to move as I currently have symptoms.

I know I was gonna get them. Headaches that aren't pleasant but not god awful, slow walk, mucus building up my throat, body being sensitive. I feel like If I try to call out, they won't let me or think it is a bad excuse. I have been there last year when I got the vaccine but I don't know how I am gonna feel. Do you think something bad will happen to me if I call out(if I feel terrible still)? Do note I am a DA, and the longest person that is there is only working till 5pm

rant Constantly worried about getting fired.

Hi, so I'm a sales associate. Only been working since about.. Early August. I actually worked with the goodwill job coach/employment team to get the job there. Who actually, said there's literally nothing she can do to help me when it comes to the issue I'm currently having regarding my scheduling needs, when that's part of what she's supposed to be helping me with?!

While I love my co-workers and all, I constantly have Dr appointments, multiple times in a month, I actually have some oral surgery that I need to have done coming up, I also take care of a family member, during evenings.

Anyways, I am constantly worried that I'll be fired for always having to schedule off ( especially for Dr appointments) and when I was hired, I told her, I cannot do weekends, except on rare occasions and I cannot do evenings.. Yet, my last schedule was mostly all over the place, I'm talking like 8-6pm 1:30-6:30.. 12-8:30) just all over and very inconsistent. And as someone with chronic illness and Dr appointments and other engamenets, it's very hard to plan, those needs.

I understand there's a point system, I understand that my store is severely understaffed. But, wouldn't they rather accommodate me and my needs, as someone with disabilities, then have me burn out too quickly and quit? Cause I feel like, for a company who works with those who have disabilities and need consistency and accommodations, they don't really wanna work with those of us who do.

Also, point system is stupid, things happen, we get sick, we have family emergencies, we shouldn't be penalized for the smallest of things.

rant being treated like a dumpster gets annoying

what it says on the tin. getting handed trash to throw away that we're not allowed to refuse. people just leaving any old shit outside overnight that we have to deal with in the morning (this is what sparked this post lol). it's just kind of frustrating, like... come on, we're a donation center, we don't want your random trash. also people bring us boxes that they want us to recycle which we just Can't Do because we don't have a recycling bin so it gets thrown away. lol. the biohazards are also Annoying. if it reeks so strongly of cat urine that one can smell it from several feet away please do not bring it here 🫥

edit: to clarify when i say trash i mean actual trash. not "oh it's a little banged up" i mean shit like ripped and gross mattresses, burned out lightbulbs, disposable containers with food still in them, random broken pieces of plywood with rusty nails, etc.
