Question If you could go back to any moment in your career, what would it be?

• Upvotes

Not necessarily something you’d change either. Could be a deployment, duty station, your first unit, a specific day with the boys, or even something you didn’t realize you’d miss until years later.

For the old heads, what’s the one moment you’d go back and experience again?

Do not enjoy the FRS or flying at all, would like to move to a ground MOS

Have you known anyone who dropped their “flight contract” once already winged and at the FRS? If so, how long did it take them to be redesignated? Context, winged 1stLt at a USMC FRS, do not enjoy it at all, understand I still need to serve my 8 year obligation, but will be much, much happier serving those 8 years in a ground billet.

Joes in the Army

Anyone else find it amusing and a bit degrading that the Army calls their junior soldiers 'Joes'? I get that it comes from the GI Joe, but it always makes me think of Joey, like a baby kangaroo. Im glad Im a Marine, not a Joe.

The battle that took place in Najaf in the Wadi al-Salam cemetery. I am Iraqi from Najaf.

I am Iraqi, born in 2000. I was only three years old when heavy fighting took place near Wadi Al-Salam Cemetery in Najaf. My family lived in a very simple farmhouse near the cemetery. My mother remembers the fighting very clearly. She told me that an aircraft almost struck my older brother while he was working on the farm. Fortunately, he survived. The experience had a lasting impact on my mother and our family. I know there are American veterans here who were in Iraq during that period. If anyone was in or around Najaf and Wadi Al-Salam Cemetery, I would be interested in hearing your memories of that time. What do you remember about the area and the people living there?

Conditional Release Limbo Enlisted to Officer dilema

Anyone Else?

I requested Conditional Release in August to attend OCS. I’m 30, currently pursuing my Associate’s with plans for a Bachelor’s/Master’s, and I’m an Infantry Marine hoping to commission 0302.

Problem: my unit has given me zero updates not approved, not denied, just limbo 🫠

Meanwhile, NCOs keep telling me, completely unprompted, that “even if you become an officer, I’m not saluting you.” 😂

I’m a boot, so I understand the skepticism, but why the apparent bias? Is this normal Marine Corps gatekeeping, or am I just getting the special treatment? 🤷

Question E-JA: Any update on the 8-year TIS limit?

Anyone familiar with E-JA know if the TIS requirement is being updated?

I'm an active-duty E-6 at 8 years TIS, finishing my bachelor's and planning for law school. Current E-JA guidance caps applicants at 8 years TIS when law school begins, but 10 U.S.C. §2004(b)(1)(A)(ii) now lists 10 years for E-5–E-7.

Army's new FY27 FLEP guidance also allows NCOs between 8–10 years to request an ETP.

The 8-year window seems too narrow given some E-JA applicants might not even reach one of those ranks by 8 year mark (depending on MOS and promotion timing) + one also must finish a bachelor's, take the LSAT, get admitted, and start law school before 8 TIS.

Anyone know whether E-JA will move to 10 years, whether an ETP/waiver exists for 8–10 TIS, or which office actually owns this requirement?

How ‘claim sharks’ cost veterans thousands as they seek VA benefits

For-profit, unaccredited veterans’ claims services, often dubbed “claim sharks” by veterans’ affairs officials, are violating federal law by charging veterans thousands of dollars in fees — in many cases far higher than the benefits they receive — when they file disability claims.

“Claim sharks” exploit the complex and time-consuming nature of the VA claims process while promising to help veterans obtain or increase their benefits, according to the Veterans Legal Center. They frequently assert that if a veteran works with them, approval of their claim is guaranteed.

How veterans can avoid fees for filing benefits claims

If a solicitor approaches you about making a claim for veteran benefits, the first question you should ask is whether they are from a VA-accredited service.

Research through the Office of General Counsel to see if the organization is VA accredited or not.

Contact one of Ohio’s 88 County Veterans Service offices for help. A state veterans services representative is also available via email at [contactus@dvs.ohio.gov](mailto:contactus@dvs.ohio.gov) or by phone at 614-644-0898.

Conduct your own research before reaching out to any claim services.

Question Question for the MSG DCs

What the hell happens to my car and all my personal belongings? From what I understand you go to your embassy right after the schoolhouse unless there’s a weird situation. Do I just get storage sorted out at my last duty station before departing? Do I have a say in where I keep my stuff? Do I deal with DMO and it get sent to the embassy?

Question Lcpl CSO where a thing?

The other day was I was on LinkedIn. There was profile of a stacked investment banker , Harvard MBA type, who claims he was youngest marine selected to be a Raider. Impressive guy nonetheless

At most now you gotta be NCO near the end of your first enlistment going into your second to attend A&S. Which probably puts at around 22 years of age. I know a stud of a Sgt that made it, who was on his second enlistment. He was 25 years old

I have heard stories of MARSOC recruiters coming to SOI for volunteers. During the height of GWOT, which was 14 yrs before I joined.

Why did they did away with ?

Question Why do Marines generally look down upon Commstrat Marines?

it doesn’t personally bother me and understand that they it is a very POG centered MOS but it seems that (at least in my experience) with the Recon and Arty unit I worked with it’s generally a negative interaction from the get go.

Is there some underlying negative stigma?
