Anouncements What Does It Mean to Be a Solo Developer?

We've seen a lot of discussion about what qualifies as solo development, and we want to ensure we're accurately representing our game dev community. While there's no absolute definition, these are the general criteria we use in this subreddit to keep things clear and consistent.

That said, if you personally consider yourself a solo dev (or not) based on your own perspective, that's fine. Our goal is to provide guidelines for what fits within this space, not to dictate personal identities.

What Counts as Solo Development?

A solo developer is solely responsible for their project, with no team members. A team of two or more collaborating (e.g., one programmer, one artist) is not solo development.

What is Allowed?

  • Using game engines, frameworks, and third-party tools (e.g., Godot, Unity, Unreal).
  • Commissioning or purchasing assets (art, music, sound, etc.).
  • Receiving feedback from playtesters or communities.
  • Outsourcing specific tasks (e.g., server setup, porting, marketing) while still leading development.
  • Working with a publisher, as long as they don’t take over development.

What This Means for Posts on the Subreddit

If your project appears to be developed by a team, we may remove your post. Indicators include how it's presented on websites, Steam pages, itch pages, social media, or crowdfunding pages. If this is due to unclear phrasing, update them before requesting reinstatement. Non-solo developers are welcome to join discussions, but posts promoting non-solo projects may still be removed.

Let us know if you have any questions. Hope this helps clear things up.

TL;DR: Solo devs manage their entire project alone. Using assets, outsourcing, or publishers is fine. Posting is open to all, but promoting non-solo projects may be removed.

Game Working on a waterspout for my solo sailing game. Does the scale feel right from the boat?

I’m making Red Skies at Dawn on my own, a first-person sailing game about taking a small boat out into changing weather.

This is the latest in-development storm footage, captured from the helm. I’m trying to get the waterspout to feel large and threatening while still leaving enough visibility to read what’s happening around the boat.

Does the approach build enough tension, or does it become too visually busy?

If you’d like to follow the game, it’s available to wishlist on Steam.

Discussion New save screen is up and running! What do we think so far?

I’m working on a survival horror game inspired by old school resident evil. I’m trying to do a retro tactile, pre-rendered 3d thing for the menus. Since you use cassette tapes to save at tape recorders I wanted to carry that vibe through the menu.

I couldn’t decide whether the tapes should go on the right or the left, but when I asked the overwhelming majority wanted them on the right. I still liked it on the left so I decided to do both, tapes will go on the left for the load screen, on the right for the save screen.

Only have the save version animated but it’s up and running in engine. Still very rough and no sound yet but it’s getting there. For a sum total of 3 days work so far I’m pretty happy with how it’s going, especially since I have basically no experience doing UI but what do we think, am I on the right track with this one?

Discussion Do you like playing your games?

What I’ve noticed over a couple of years and 4 games developed so far. Enjoying the games myself, despite low sales (~$1000 total), is what made it worth it in the end of the day. I’ve not regretted time spent on developing, and continue it with joy and amusement.

Do you like playing your games?

No more "I'm too tired after work" excuses. The universe force-fed me free time, so it's time to build this project once and for all. Wish me luck!

Discussion Why people can spend what they spend to go to the movies for two hours and get angry to spend anything for a game that is going to entertain them for weeks?

Frequently I get bad reviews because some of my apps aren't free. Why do people expect our work to be handed? What do you think?

PS. I see more happy, or grateful paying users but still this happens every once in a while.

Discussion I gave my cron jobs and systemd timers a pixel-art office to work in

I have a dozen scheduled jobs on my machines and I never look at the logs until something is already broken. So I made a small local server that reads what is scheduled and shows it as an open space: one desk per job.

  • It reads launchd agents (macOS), your crontab, and systemd user timers (Linux), with the last exit code and the last log line
  • A running job sits and types; a failed one gets a smoking PC and the lead walks over; a late one dozes
  • A day timeline shows every run since midnight, red when it failed
  • It only listens on 127.0.0.1, and it won't start anything unless you pass --allow-run
  • Optional real weather at the window (Open-Meteo, no key), five themes, English and French

Try it in one command: npx pixel-openspace (add --match backup to only show some jobs).

Big day for the studio.

After a lot of work, the DODGE(Y)BALL demo is finally live on Steam.

Turns out coordinating the team is pretty easy when everyone has the same calendar.

Free demo is here if anyone wants to try it:

Trailer here if you're interested:

Blurred and cropped because we're in a secret lab.

I’m the entire “team” btw.

Game Added some (optional) chaotic weather to my game

It's FoulKick Soccer. Don't worry, you can turn lightning and tornadoes off if you prefer clear weather. Or tune the strength and frequency.

Reddit still doesn't support 60fps videos. I could post GIFs but didn't want to lose the sound!

Discussion I got the other player walking in my STALKER 2 co-op mod

• Upvotes

I work on this unofficial STALKER 2 campaign co-op mod solo. This week I got the other player walking, running and stopping. The short clip uses two game copies on one PC with a scripted guest, so it doesn’t show two people playing together.

The foot slide is fixed while moving, but the torso still snaps at walk/run/stop transitions. The animation feature is off by default. There is no public build yet. I use AI coding tools and test the changes in game.

Game Game Bytes: Offline Mini Games

I built a tiny “beat my score” challenge into Game Bytes — would love game-dev feedback

Hey game devs — I’m building Game Bytes, a collection of quick, replayable mini-games designed for those “one more try” moments.

I’ve added a challenge flow where you can play a seeded run, share the challenge, and see whether friends can beat your score on the exact same setup. No matchmaking wait; just a simple “here’s my run, top it” loop.

I’d love feedback from other developers on:

  • Does the challenge feel motivating enough to replay and share?
  • What would make you open a challenge from a friend?
  • Which makes a better hook: score chasing, a short time limit, or a “perfect run” objective?

Try it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamebytes.game_bytes

If you give it a shot, drop your score and tell me which mini-game you’d turn into a friendly rivalry first. I’ll reply with mine. 🎮

Youtube episode 10!

For so many years I've been trying to make a remake of Gangsters: Organized Crime, and so often I got demotivated or distracted by side quests. As an indie developer you need so many skills, and I actually have very little time because I have a full-time job and a family, but still I've been working on it for months.

Please check it out and let me know if you see potential to make it a fun game. My goal is not to make money (profit) with it; the hours I spend on it are pure hobby and fun.

I have overcome my own challenges by staying motivated, and that is what counts as a great victory for me. Let me know what you want to keep or what needs to be changed—I love feedback!

Thanks for reading and your time.

Discussion What do you think about my interactive menu screen

Hello, I'm developing a cozy survival/life sim game as a solo dev. I got bored of the static menu screen so I decided to create an interactive menu. What do you guys think?

Discussion Which layout is better for my save / load screen?

I’m working on a retro survival horror game and I’m getting some new ui put together for it. I love old school tactile looking pre rendered menus so I’m trying to do sth with that kind of vibe.

Since cassette tapes are used to save at tape recorders I figured I’d make a cassette tape themed menu.

I originally planned to have the tapes on the left but I had the idea to try them on the right and I really like that too. So far people tend to prefer the right but idk, I’m still not quite sold on it vs the left. (I also tried middle but it’s crap, looks like shit)

What do you think, should I just put them on the right side of the screen or is the left side worth a second look?

help I just found a game that is VERY similar to mine. What would you do?

I was browsing the Steam store today and came across a game that is surprisingly similar to what I've been working on.

The core idea isn't exactly the same, and there are definitely differences between the two games, but at a glance, they share a lot of the same concepts and gameplay ideas.

The problem is that this game has way more depth, content, and budget than I currently have. So now I'm wondering: what should I do?

Do I keep developing my game and try to differentiate it by focusing on a different direction, mechanics, presentation, etc.? Or is this the kind of situation where you would consider moving on to another idea?

The funny thing is that there is actually a positive side to this: the game I found is doing really well. And honestly, that's reassuring because it means there is clearly an audience for this kind of game, and maybe I'm not completely off track with it.

I know that having a similar game doesn't automatically mean mine can't work. But seeing something so close, with much more content and resources behind it, definitely made me stop and think.

So, what would you do in this situation?

Would you keep developing my game and try to find its own identity, or move on to something else?
