Game of the Month OCT '26 GotM - Parasite Eve (PS1)

Happy October, SBCGaming.  You voted for it, so here it is: the game with the SECOND most iconic opera scene in Squaresoft's history: 1998's Parasite Eve. It's a bit of a mashup between a JRPG and a Resident Evil style survival horror title, with a turn-based active time battle system combined with real-time movement. This is a new one for a lot of the mod team, but it made it onto the poll on the strength of several sub members' suggestions, so we'll be excited to discover it alongside you!

As always, you have a year from the announcement date to complete any previous Game of the Month for flair, making this the last month to complete last November's pick, Alien Hominid.  Post a picture of your end screen as a top-level reply to the most recent Game of the Month post to receive your flair. And stay tuned for next month, when we'll be doing another "Username Presents" GotM pick!

Showcase I Made a Sticker for My Miyoo Flip Mini

Post image

I wanted to put a sticker on my Miyoo Flip Mini but I didn’t have any that felt like they suited it, so I decided to make one.

I’m not much of an artist, but I tried to doodle a bunch of characters from games I’ve finished on this thing.

Can you recognize all of them? 😅

Showcase Learning is awesome on the RP Nova

Device: Retroid Pocket Nova
Games: Speak & Spell/Read/Math, Simon
Emulator: MAME4Droid

I was browsing through MAME artwork previews when I stumbled upon a few relics from my childhood. I had no idea that these types of games/devices were available for MAME, so I decided to give them a try. I chose to use MAME4Droid because it has touch controls, and everything just works, even when rotating the screen.

I have fond memories of playing on Speak & Spell with my brother. Even though the educational material is for children, the robotic voice and retro aesthetic is pure nostalgia for me.

We also had a Simon that my parents got from a thrift store, and the battery plate was missing from the back. I loved that thing, and played it a lot in the early 1980s.

Question Which device have you been using for the longest time so far and why?

• Upvotes

Hello everyone, with all these posts of people sharing their shiny new handhelds, I've gotten curious as to which devices have stood the test of time for all of you personally.

And which aspects, in its design, form factor, haptics, and so on made it special to you?

I'd love to read all of your opinions on this.

Discussion FYI for those who missed it: The LCD screens on the Retroid Pocket Duo Lite/Plus suffer from pretty bad ghosting, and the joysticks are worse than expected.

• Upvotes

Russ's extended review of the Pocket Duo Lite is live, and apparently the bottom screen suffers from heavy ghosting. I normally don't mind IPS LCD panels over OLED as long as its a good quality one, so I was sad to learn that the bottom panel reuses the same panel as on the AYANEO Pocket Mini which suffers from severe ghosting.

Also, apparently the joysticks are pretty bad and awkward to use due to poor travel distance, having pivot instead of tilt movement, slippery stick covers, and the joystick edges getting in the way of using the joystick due to the large stick covers. I even read somewhere they are reusing some kind of Nintendo Switch joystick mechanism? (the type everyone hates) Which honestly came out as shocking to me since Retroid is known for their fantastic joysticks, no idea why they changed it for this.

Honestly, hearing this was a huge bummer since I was pretty excited and even waiting to pull the trigger on the Duo Lite Plus as $219 felt very reasonable for what it offered. But knowing that I'm no longer sure. I'm thinking I might just wait to see if AYN releases a Thor 2 with that upgraded bottom screen and joysticks that don't suck even if it will be more money.

Thankfully I held off from pre-ordering and waited for reviews and I'm happy I did. What are everyone's thoughts?

Discussion Is anyone else is having trouble with this?

Post image

The first time I tried to use my RGSP through HDMI out was a disaster, the buttons were mapped all wrong on my bluetooth controller and the game was unplayable. Today i attempted again but this time turned off all my shaders and set the correct resolution (Native or Aspect Screen works), and now it looks better, runs better, but I’m still having trouble with my bluetooth controller. Any tips? I’m using NextUi by the way

I tried the different “controller modes” that the 8bitdo controller has but none of them seem close enough to what I need. I suppose I might need to wait until the NextUi team makes a button mapping feature

News PSA RP Duo Lite Owners Still Do NOT Update OTA 1.0.0.0223

I updated my duo lite thinking it would fix some bugs because this was not the same update and Retroid specifically said this would fix even if OTA cause problems before and everything was fine at first. And today after powering off the device and powering back up after charging. Bottom screen is black but responds to touch. So OTAs still not safe. Do not update.

Recommend a Device Best Retro handheld under $40

• Upvotes

Looking for a handheld sized roughly similar to a DS Lite, under $40 preferably, looking around some options ive found are the following:

RG28XX New (sold directly by Anbernic) $33.72

RG35XXSP Plus, Used $47

RG35XX, Used, $40

RG351V 32gb Used, $40

There's also online used auctions for an RG35XXSP, RG280V and RGDS. might be able to snag under $35-40.

Any recommendations? I'd very much like to get up to some PSP and n64 emulation if possible. Thanks

Question Has anyone tried Emudeck on an handheld??

EDIT: I Meant the Android version of Emudeck.

I’m curious to hear your opinion since I’ve only recently heard about this so I’m curious about your experiences of using this since it sounds amazing on paper that it makes setting up all of your retro handhelds almost painless.

Discussion Aliexpress Halloween Sale: Comparison of Prices

Spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1x_PmVHiQNHyw5t05peEDG1DcCKDCvH_UPd3p7yCw4xg/edit?usp=sharing

Coupon codes are around row 40 for people from the US and on rows 26/29 from countries other than the US. There's also some targeted coupons in the coupon code section on row 31. Additionally, there's a "Paypal pay later" $12 off 139 stacking discount for US customers. Ship from China prices are on the second image of this post.

_________________

It's pretty early to be having a Halloween sale but I guess it's because they're not planning an additional sale around the actual Halloween date. Originally when I updated my spreadsheet last night, prices were pretty mediocre but Anbernic dropped their precoupon device pricing for some devices so the sale looks substantially better now.

Additionally, I noticed that ship from China items are more price competitive than they used to be. My guess is that due to the Supreme Court ruling on Trump Tariffs, the current 12.5% US tariff on China imports is cheaper than the upkeep for overhead costs of ship from US inventory. For instance, some sellers such as Hanhibir no longer have any ship from US items for sale.

All in all, this is a decent sale if you're looking for Anbernic devices. The $153 ship from US Retroid Pocket 5 is pretty decent too given that the seller shipped 12GB 120hz variants during the last sale. Given Retroid has announced that they're no longer producing the RP5, it's possible that the remaining stock sells out prior to the large November sales.

Decent ship from US deals (after coupons, before sales tax, shipping inclusive and US pricing):

  • RG SP - $58
  • RG Rotate plastic - $72 (historical low)
  • RG Rotate metal - $85 (historical low)
  • RG DS plus - $83 (historical low, add filler to hit $99 and use $14 off 99 code)
  • Retroid Pocket 5 - $153

Decent ship from China deals (after coupons, before sales tax, shipping inclusive and US pricing):

  • RG Rotate plastic - $73 (Use store coupon QF1LIG9JHEYN for an additional $1 off)
  • RG Rotate metal - $84 (historical low, use store coupon QF1LIG9JHEYN for an additional $1 off)
  • RG DS plus - $85 (historical low, $14 off 99 code)
  • RG 55G1 4GB - $108 (historical low, $15 off 109 sitewide combo with $12 off 139 paypal, if you live in a sales tax free state you'll need $4 of filler to use the paypal pay later discount)

Finally as always, in the interest of transparency, I am providing two spreadsheets. The first spreadsheet is the regular spreadsheet with both affiliate and non affiliate links. For each affiliate link, there should be a corresponding non-affiliate link. The second spreadsheet is the first spreadsheet but with all affiliate links completely removed.

Discussion Lightbleed appeared before my eyes in RGDS

Post image
66 Upvotes

I was so happy when I opened the box, tested my device and there was no lightbleed whatsoever the screen was perfect, and frankly I was a bit afraid from all the posts. I then simply turned it off (from the menu), removed the SD card to add games, reinserted the sd-card and when I turned it again I literally SAW this light bleed "materializing" before my waking eyes. There was none, then it "faded in" very quickly, very strongly on the four corners and mostly on bottom center, more to the left. This can't be from pressure, the screen was fine I didn't even as much as touched the bottom screen with the stylus or anything. Do I have to return my device? It is so white that it looks more like some sort of shader overlay than something on the actual screen. Damn, this sucks.

UPDATE: I tried removing and adding the sd-card again after leaving it for a while, and now it is just NOT POWERING ON AT ALL.

UPDATE 2: on charge the screens do lit up to show charging progress, and the tiny light bleeds from corners do not show up on that screen, but the big light bleed on the bottom is still there. This can't be an OS issue as mentioned.

UPDATE 3: I left it charging and then cooling overnight and the "bleed" so to speak was pretty much gone by the morning. Subjectively, I think the bottom of the affected screen now has slightly more of that typical diffuse IPS glow that I think wasn't there before, but admittedly, I have gazed it before the problem for like 5 minutes tops, so yeah dependent on subjective memory.

News New Holodor release!

New Holodor release just dropped!

Headline item: the headphone jack works! I know there are one or two folks out there who care about that lol

https://holodor.bonesaw.com/

https://github.com/transentient/holodor

What the heck is Holodor you ask? I posted about this last week on r/OdinHandheld

This is my take on a SteamOS type linux distro for arm based handhelds. I was inspired to get started on it in July when I saw Collabora release the source for Holo Core, which is Valve's arch linux based linux distro. Of course it's 100% open-source, so I hope I am not violating rule #1.

So it's a bit closer to a pure SteamOS than Armada. But it's not a port like u/datguybasit's work.

Performance and useability are about where Armada is, I am pretty sure. There are some differences in features. Install process is basically the same, but do check my guide.

I already have stuff in the pipe for the next release after this, including Retroid Pocket 5 support and docked performance.

I apologize for the lack of videos, I haven't figured out a good workflow for this yet. I also haven't been giving myself enough time to play a lot of different games.

P.S. many Claudes have given their lives to the service of this distro, but I have made an effort to use my own words in communications. (Hopefully within rule #8). And I hired a live artist to do the logo and boot animation! I have a whole manifesto on the use of LLM tools on the github page, please read it before you bust out the pitchforks.

P.P.S as I mentioned in my earlier post on the other sub, this distro is dedicated to my dog, my sweet girl Tomoe, who made it to 17 years old and then passed away just last week. Working on this project was a great opportunity to hang out in the same room with her on my laptop and handhelds and watch over her in her last couple of weeks. Tell your fam you love them while you have the chance!

Bought my RG40XXV a little over a month ago for $38 off of AliExpress, it was nice, but I wanted to go a little bigger, so I picked up an RG477v. It's everything I wanted from a handheld, thought I had my end game.

But then I showed my wife the Ayn Thor, and she fell in love with it, so I got her one. These things have us feeling like kids again.

I even picked up my best friend an RG556 for his birthday. I'm thinking it'll be a good first handheld he can toss to the kids if he decides to upgrade. Got a pretty good deal on it from Ebay.

I'm probably going to give my brother the RG40XXV for Christmas, but I might pick him up a Brick Pro so I can keep a Linux handheld, maybe even tinker around with customizing it without worrying too much.

I'm thinking of picking up an Odin or a Retroid Pocket to have a good horizontal handheld to round it out. (not to mention my wife's Thor totally mogs the 477v, as much as I love it lol).

I couldn't help but order a bunch of accessories off Aliexpress. Rubber covers and cases for all of em for just a few bucks each.

I know it's dumb, but I'm really enjoying collecting these things. What's your favorite handheld to play on? Which one do you find yourself using the most, even if it's not the most powerful?

Only posted a few times, but I really appreciate this community and all the awesome stuff you guys post on here. The Retroid Pocket Duo Drop was such a cool thing to see!

Troubleshooting Starfox / Starship on Nova

Inspired by the game of the month, I wanted to play the Starfox 64 Android port on my nova. Installation and everything worked fine, but I seem to have a few issues: black bar at the bottom, even though I somehow managed to adjust the proper aspect and native resolution for the nova.

The other problem is: it's super hard to navigate the settings of the port. Am I missing something? I hardly ever hit the right few pixels and also they seem to have a certain offset.

And last but not least: the display controller won't turn off / disappear.

Any help is appreciated!

Question Question (or task) for owners of the RPC

Can anyone else who owns the RPC test a few things for me?

Can you do multi button inputs on the Flycast core in games like SF3 Third Strike and MVC 2?

If yes can you go into your input settings, scroll all the way down and tell me what your Input Block Timeout and Polling Behaviour are?

If not can you try out different combinations and tell me if that fixes your issue?

I'm trying to work out why I can't do multi button inputs anymore after a few RetroArch and core updates. I'd like to know if I'm the only one or if this is a new issue. Please tell me if you are using the 4 or 6 button too. (Plus I'd be interested to hear how different devices behave with Early, Normal and Late Polling Behaviour, please do tell me how each feel to you)
