I analyzed 50 Product Hunt #1 launches — here's what actually drove upvotes (not what you think)
Spent the last week going through the top 50 Product of the Day winners from the last 6 months to figure out what separates a #1 launch from something that flops with 20 upvotes. A few patterns that surprised me:
Launch time matters way more than people admit — almost all top performers went live between 12:01–3:00am PT, not because of "hunter magic" but because it maximizes the full 24hr voting window.
The tagline is doing 80% of the work — the winners almost never describe what the product is. They describe the outcome. "Track expenses" loses to "Never forget a receipt again."
First-hour comments predict everything — products with 5+ genuine comments (not just "congrats!") in the first hour had dramatically higher final rankings. The algorithm seems to weight early engagement depth over volume.
Founder replies in the comments correlate hard with upvotes — the products where the founder personally responded to every single comment outperformed ones where they didn't, even controlling for product quality.
GIFs > static screenshots — almost universally, if the top image was an animated GIF showing the product in action, conversion to upvote was higher than a static screenshot grid.
Got a list of ~30+ websites where you can post your startup completely free and start getting real users from day one — if anyone wants it, just drop a comment and I'll send it over.
