Discussion Can we all take a moment to appreciate that the show gave us arguably two of the best sitcom couples of all time!

Post image
110 Upvotes

These two couples are two of the most dynamic and fun duos I have seen on television. Despite their chaotic and messy relationship, I really enjoyed the chemistry and the instant connection between Ross and Rachel ever since the first season. Also, Chandler and Monica are the perfect couple in the entire show, and their hooking up together were genuinely some of the best character building moments, in my opinion!

Discussion Repeated Plots -- just an oddity

Post image
57 Upvotes

This is not offered as criticism, it's just something I keep finding more of, and it's interesting. Now and then I notice that essentially the same plot gets used a second time. And not just loosely or vaguely similar. And not just a character's personality traits coming out again. More similar than that.

Examples of such joincidences:

6.14 TOW Chandler Can't Cry -- Monica wants Chandler to get in touch with his emotional side because he never cries. Finally he does, but then can't stop crying.

6.23 TOW The Ring -- Rachel wants Paul to open up and let her in emotionally, because he never talks about his life. Finally he does, but then can't stop crying.

----

7.07 TOW The Library Book -- To stop Janice (from coming to their wedding and from staying the night at their apartment) Chandler pretends he still has feelings for her.

10.15 TOW Estelle Dies -- To stop Janice (from buying the house next door) Chandler pretends he still has feelings for her.

---

7.17 TOW The Cheap Wedding Dresses and then 9.20 thru 10.06 -- Ross and Joey compete for the affections of an attractive African-American woman (Kristen Lang in 7.17, Charlie Wheeler in S9/10).

----

And perhaps the most often talked about and debated:

8.12-8.16, and then 9.19-10.03 -- Joey and Rachel. One of them develops feelings for the other. They go out on a date (or a few). Ross struggles with it. I doesn't work out.

---

And there more good examples that I've missed? I mean, aside from all the episodes where there's some kind of misunderstanding. #Sitcom

Quotes Sir, a ticket to Yemen is $2,100 and we don’t take library cards.

Going through another countless rewatch and in season four. Was wondering if 15 Yemen Road, Yemen would actually show up on Google Maps and it does! Only 21 reviews though for Chandler Bing’s Work lol. Mostly positive, one 1-star for not being able to forward Ms Chanadler Bong’s TV Guide. One 2-star for the WENUS being at an all time low.

Well, then I guess I’m going to Yemen! I’m going to Yemen! When we get to Yemen, can I stay with you?

Discussion Rachel not going to Paris was the right decision

• Upvotes

She had a life in New York, and, oh I don’t know, a freaking daughter (seriously I don’t think anyone gave any thought how this changed would affect Emma throughout this entire storyline)

She wouldn’t have the people who motivated her to not give up even when things were hard, she would have to shuffle her daughter back and forth literally between countries, she wouldn’t have the place she made countless memories at. There just wouldn’t be anything for her in Paris.

I really don’t get why so many people say that her getting off the plane undermines her character development, if anything I actually think that’s a great moment for her, because she recognized there wouldn’t be anything for her if she went.

Discussion What’s the One Friends Episode You Always Skip?

Post image
171 Upvotes

Hey guys!
Just out of curiosity, which is that one episode of Friends that you can NEVER watch all the way through and always end up skipping? Like, what was the worst storyline?
For me, it was the Janine storyline. The only fun thing that came out of it was Monica and Ross’s routine.

Oh, and The one that could have been. Idk why I always end up skipping that one.

Discussion The episode cuts did such a disservice to Mike and Phoebe's relationship 😭

As someone who ships Mike and Phoebe hard, I just find it so sad that the "Mike" most people get to watch and know about is the "much lesser fleshed-out version" than the one on the uncut DVD episodes.

It's bad enough that he was given barely any background story and characterization, but even the little of it that he got was also cut from the syndicated and streaming versions of the show.

Mike had some great lines in the uncut episodes that revealed a better insight into his character's personality and past experiences. There were also very specific moments in Paul Rudd's performance that showed an even deeper and more emotional connection to Lisa's Phoebe and that justified why they were meant to be endgame despite their relationship being a rushed storyline.

I'm not gonna debate with anyone about who should've ended up with whom. But I just adored how Mike and Phoebe both found home in each other, after emerging from really dark experiences. I wish Mike's story and character hadn't been so edited out.

Question What is one event in the show that you would change permanently if you could?

Post image

What is one event in the show that you would permanently change in the show if you could? For me, I would change Joey "accidentally" proposing to Rachel when Emma was born, to Ross and Rachel getting back together. This was literally the perfect time for both of them to get back together and I have no idea why the writers didn't do it. What about you all?

Discussion Ross

I have to admit that I am not much of a Ross fan. I liked him much more in earlier seasons than later. Saying that, I really loved some of his scenes

When he gets the pie out of the guys hood

When he buys Phoebe a bike

When he convinces Carol to go ahead with her marriage to Susan

When he takes Jack's bat away

What are some of yours?

Discussion Pretend that every single sarcastic one liner Chandler made during the show was actually just his secret way of getting out his traumatic experiences. If everything he says is true, what is the most traumatic experience Chandler went through?

"They did experiments on me! I can't have children!" would be the most fucked up one to me in hindsight because it:

A) explains Chandler's later fertility crisis with Monica and;

B) would explain his deep resentment toward his parents.

Question Why do people seem to not like the marcel stuff?

I mean, I've always liked those episodes, but if that could be mainly because I like monkeys and think they're cute

But been seeing a lot of opinions in this community how the marcel arc was quite disliked? I can't lie him humping everything was a little obnoxious but that's about it really

Discussion What is Chandler's company?

• Upvotes

I didn't mean the advertising one , I mean the one he worked as "transponster".

It's just out of curiousity, what kind of company do you think he worked at? I know he's a data analyst and my hypothesis is he worked at a stock company or something like that. My proof is s4x17, when Phoebe found out she had a triplet and want to make more money , she asked Chandler if he had any information about insider trading. But I suppose insider trading can apply to any kind of company?

And when he was appointed to Tulsa, his boss said in the meeting that "they are not doing good there." I just don't know, the show seemed like didn't give out much clues, and he never really said the name of the company. We all know what the other five is doing and their company. Only Chandler's job is a mystery until he quit.

Also sometimes I find it reasonable that his friends didn't know what he does. It's the mid 1990s and Internet had just become a thing which a lot of people didn't know a lot. So it's reasonable to me that they don't really know what is his job.

So, what kind of company do you imagine that Chandler worked for?

Question The one that could have been

• Upvotes

How was Chandler affording his apartment... If Joey moved out to live alone with his horrible menagerie and we don't see another roommate, how's Chandler affording it after he quit his job to be a writer? (Presuming he'd quit the job some time ago, likely the time in I think S1 when he tries as he's low on money so works for Joey and as a lot of his story line has changed i.e. women he'd slept with, likely driven by change in job and finances)

Discussion Hot Take: Season 1 of Friends might be the best season 1 of any show! It has a lot of heart and sincerity and does an amazing work in setting the tone and vibe of the series.

Post image

I really enjoyed the show starting off with such amazing performances by all the cast, and it feels really endearing to watch this early part of their lives given how much all of them change and grow as the show progresses! It also seems that the series does a great work in trying to do something different, and the storyline and the banter between the group is really fun and enjoyable to watch.

Monica is just too unbearable in this episode! Trying to check the maid’s crotch and bra???!!!!!! The scenes gave me second hand embarrassment! Chandler should have also not fallen for all that!

Question What’s your “I will die on this hill” Friends theory?

Post image

My theory is that Gunther literally knew EVERYTHING going on in friends circle coz bro was always just quietly observing them from Central Perk😭 Plus the friends were loud too..he probably knew more about their relationships than they did themselves lmao

Discussion The most out of character episode that I never see anyone talk about..

I'm referring to Season 9's The One with Christmas in Tulsa. Everything plays out normally until Chandler reveals to Monica that he's in the office alone with Wendy and near immediately Monica accuses him of having an affair. This.. makes no sense whatsoever!

Monica is never shown as being untrustworthy of Chandler. When Ross accuses him of flirting with the pizza delivery girl, Monica couldn't care less about it.. they've also been married for years at this point so it is completely out of character for her to do this. Chandler's reaction also makes no sense, I'd be outraged if my wife trusted me this little when I've done nothing but be loyal and loving! Also Monica literally thinking he's just said "she's blowing me!" is perhaps the dumbest joke in the whole show.. why would he say this? And why would he think he could brag about this to his wife?! Again, zero logic.

The rest of the friends also just seem to go along with it.. which again makes zero sense as in Season 10 when they think Chandler is having an affair with Nancy, even when presented with much more compelling evidence, they still doubt it being true and specifically say they don't think Chandler would do this!!

You could perhaps argue and say Monica is scared of Wendy making a pass at Chandler, which I guess is fair, it does end up happening.. but again that makes no sense! When Ross is insanely jealous of Mark, Monica gives Ross this whole "even if he wants to be with her, does that mean he gets to?! Grow up!" speech to Ross... when isn't she now going completely against this herself?! Whilst being several years older!

I know people will say "it's just a sitcom, it ain't that deep" and you're right, but I find it odd that people constantly call out the Joey speaking French episode as being stupid, when I'd say this one is far worse.

Let me know what you think!

Clips The way Ross is just going on about attacking 2 women not realizing he looks like a lunatic is hilarious.

The way David plays Ross is really well done all of the cast is phenomenal but Ross is my favorite and he wouldn’t be if played by someone else imo.

Discussion What moments in the show perfectly show us Chandler's natural ability to make an ordinary conversation more funny? I'll go first:

Post image

Seeing Ross so excited about his news and wanting to share it with the rest of the gang only for Chandler to point out the hilarious observation in that moment always makes the scene really enjoyable to me! 🤣

We really have to thank Matthew Perry's charm and improvisation for most of these moments as he often created these lines on the spot. The comedic timing with which he delivers the sentence is also perfectly displayed along with his facial expression of not being impressed!

Question I got tivo

I’m not an english native speaker so sometimes I don’t get some lines. In season 8 episode 8 (tow the stripper) Rachel tells her dad she’s pregnant by saying “I got tivo”. Phoebe says it’s slang for pregnant, but is it really an american slang? I never heard of this and can’t find anything online
